Is information stored on a modem?
Answer: Broad band (High speed) cable and DSL modems only store non-personal configuration related data that is preset by the manufacturer and/or your ISP (Internet service provider). Data that you transmit over the Internet via your modem is encrypted and may be buffered; albeit, non-decipherable. If you're worried about any data being left on your modem, simply disconnect the modem's power on an occasional basis, which in addition, also resets the modem resulting in faster Internet speeds.

Can you delete cache off computer without hurting anything on it?
Yes you can. It will actually make your PC run faster.
Assuming you mean your browser's cache, then you can certainly delete (or clean) it without hurting anything. However, the browser cache is there to speed up the displaying of pages, so after you clean is out, your browser will render pages slower for a while, until it fills the cache back up with your commonly-used items. Browser caches are also the place where things like automatic login cookies are stored, so by deleting your browser cache, you will be prompted for a password the next time you try to access any password-protected web site.
Caches in general work this way: they are a place to temporarily put things which are commonly needed. Thus, a cache can be cleaned out or deleted without impacting the functionality of your computer - that is, they perform no ESSENTIAL function. However, they provide a (significant) performance increase, as a getting things from a local cache is always faster than getting from the original location.
If you are referring to cache memory (frequently mentioned in the specifications of a CPU chip), this cache is part of the CPU hardware itself, and cannot be turned off or deleted.

What do you do if whenever you try to download something or open it it says 'open with'?
It means that your computer does not recognize the file type and therefor cannot auto assign a program to open it. Depending on what you download, the "open with" option will allow you to assign the appropriate program for the file.
Removing the Gateway 7330 keyboard to get to the heatsink. Remove the battery for safety's sake. There is a panel with the on/off switch etc, next to the display. It does not look like it comes off, but it does. The first step is to remove 2 long screws from the bottom of the laptop. These are near the back edge, and are slightly staggered from each other. They are the middle two screws. After removing them, look at the back edge of the computer where the screen "hinges or pivots are. There are two silver plastic pieces. With the display approx vertical (in normal viewing position), carefully press in on the bottom of the two pieces and pry them up until the locking tab is exposed and sitting outside of the plastic. From the front of the laptop, pry these silver plastic pieces up (you may have to tilt the display backward). The plastic strip WILL come out, (it rocks upward toward the front edge of the laptop. Once it is up, there are two screws, one at each end of the keyboard, that secure it. Remove these screws and the keyboard lifts up, to expose a large sheet of metal.
There are two long screws and some short ones. Removing this, will allow the metal to be removed from the heatsink/fan assembly. Removing the 4 large slotted screws, and lifting the glued down flap of plastic (to free the cable going to the display), should allow you to manipulate the fans and heatsinks out of the laptop. In my case, it pulled the processor with it, and I had to carefully pry it off the heatsink and re-insert it into the socket. I then replaced the silver grease. HOWEVER:
to clean out the fans, you can used compressed air and blow down through the fans, and into the vents from the outside.
Leave the fans in place, with the heatsink screwed down, and you can put the battery back in, and power the laptop up. Observe the fans and if they are not running, they can be removed and replaced. (one comes out from the top of the heatsink, one comes out from the bottom of the heat sink.)
What are System service programs?
A service program contains executable code for one or more services. A service program created with the type "SERVICE_WIN32" OWN_PROCESS contains the code for only one service. A service program created with the type "SERVICE_WIN32" SHARE_PROCESS contains code for more than one service, enabling them to share code. An example of a service program that does this is the generic service host process, "Svchost.exe", which hosts internal Windows services. Note that "Svchost.exe" is reserved for use by the operating system and should not be used by non-Windows services. Instead, developers should implement their own service hosting programs.
A service program can be configured to execute in the context of a user account from either the built-in (local), primary, or trusted domain. It can also be configured to run in a special service user account.
The following topics describe the interface requirements of the service control manager (SCM) that a service program must include:
These topics do not apply to driver services. For interface requirements of driver services, see the Windows Driver Kit (WDK).
A service runs as a background process that can affect system performance, responsiveness, energy efficiency, and security. For service optimization guidelines, see Developing Efficient Background Processes for Windows.

It doesn't - unless you've set a schedule. The 'default' is Wednesday mornings at 1am - which is pointless because the computer cannot defrag the drive while it's switched off ! You would normally set the defrag program to run at a specific time and day which suits your needs. You can set it to run daily, weekly or monthly at whatever time is suitable to you.
