Conquistadors

For God, Glory and Gold, was their rallying cry, but the conquest of much of the New World by Spanish conquistadors, driven by a mentality reminiscent of the medieval crusaders, was surely one of history's turning points, but even in the 16th century, questions were asked about the morality of their exploits.

Why was Ponce de leon a hero?

"In 1513, Ponce De Leon, the conqueror and governor of Puerto Rico, embarked on a search for a fabled fountain of youth. He never found it, but he did make the first Spanish landing on the mainland of North America. Perhaps because the land was in bloom with spring flowers, he called the land he discovered Florida."

He was the one who discovered Florida. I hope I am talking about the same Ponce de Leon you are talking about. :)

What has Ponce De Leon done in his life?

I did a project on Ponce De Leon once in 5th grade- and still remember the answers. These are some of the things I learned that he did in his life:

Juan Ponce De Leon journeyed from Euorpe to the "New World" or North America. He landed in Florida, but of course it had no name. Spain had sponsored his trip there, if you need know that. Anyways, he was looking for the Fountain of Youth, a "magical" fountain legend to make the elderly young again. But he died before he could find the mythical Fountain. However, he named the state we now know as Florida after flowers that were beautiful in his eyes. I have no idea what the flowers were named, but I'm sure it was Florida-somthing.

When did Hernan Cortes die and how?

Hernan Cortes died of pleurisy (inflammation of the lung) on December 2, 1547.

He was 62 years old.

Sources indicate that he was enroute back to Mexico, contracted dysentery in Seville, and died there.

Why was Cortes able to conquer Mexico when they were so outnumbered?

There is a common misconception that Cortes alone annihilated the Aztecs with superior weaponry and a false belief that he was "Quetzalcoatl reincarnated"; the truth is the Aztecs knew he was a man, but he made an alliance with the Tlaxcalan nation, who were bitter enemies of the Aztecs and provided more than 100,000 warriors to help Cortes during his conquest. Also, when contact was made, inadvertently someone from Cortes' crew started an epidemic of smallpox that utterly ravaged the Aztec homeland; it is stated that from a population of 20 million in 1518, after 1521 there were only 2 million people living in Mexico. After such event, the Spanish found relatively easy to mow down the remaining Aztec forces.

What were Hernan Cortes' political views?

Cortes, like many explorers and conquistadors, was motivated by the three G's - gold, glory, and God. They wanted riches for themselves, personal glory, and to spread Christianity to the New World peoples. Men like Cortes were far more interested in the "gold and glory" parts of the phrase, and used the God part simply to excuse the atrocities they were committing against the native peoples in the name of Christianity.
