Where did cookies originally come from?

The origin of Christmas cookies is not known. Here is some information about Christmas cookies:

Did you know that sugar once sold for the equivalent of $100.00 a pound? And that flour was a far more essential kitchen item in households where people literally had to bake bread and biscuits everyday for basic sustenance?

I bring these up because they're important points in the fact that cookies, candies, and cakes are a traditional part of most every Western celebration. In times where we didn't have a mega-mart on every corner, these treats used "rare" and "expensive" ingredients like sugar, or essential ingredients like flour that weren't normally "wasted"; only on the most special occasions did you commit the cost of expensive or essential ingredients to such treats. So it is only natural that a holiday like Christmas would have cookies associated with it.

Why cookies, specifically? That's really unknown. Cookies are just a form of small cake, really, with the conveniece of being handheld and quick to bake. The German traditions that led to Christmas cookies included ''Lebkuchen'' and ''Spritz'' recipes that used less sugar and more spices like cinnimon, cloves, and nutmeg--cheaper and easier to get than sugar was--as well as raisins and other dried fruits.

I suspect it was the same tradition made those spices synonymous with Christmas; at least, I always associate cinnamon and nutmeg with the holidays!

In modern times, cookies are simply fun. For many families, cutting and decorating Christmas cookies is a tradition, as is leaving them out for Santa Claus (either to be nice, or to try and bribe a better gift for naughty children!).

What are the varieties of Girl Scout cookies?

The licensed bakers (Little Brownie Bakers and ABC Bakers) can offer up to eight varieties of cookies for Girl Scouts to sell.

They must always sell Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos® and Shortbread/Trefoils.

The other five optional cookies can be changed each year, however, the Samoas®/Caramel deLites® and the Peanut Butter Patties®/Tagalongs® are so popular that it is unlikely they will be changed.

For 2014, ABC Bakers also have Lemonades, Thanks-a-Lot, Cranberry Citrus Crisps, and Chocolate Chip Shortbread.

Little Brownie Bakers also have Savannah Smiles, Dulce de Leche, and Thank U Berry Munch.

How much does a tub of Pillsbury cookie dough cost?

It's 3 times the value of the Molossian Valora.

But seriously, I would assume it varies across states, as most prices in, for example, California, are generally higher than those in Pennsylvania.

As a general value I would believe around 3 or 4 dollars.

If you have one of those expensive high wattage microwaves, you actually can!

Put it in for about two minutes, should be done by then.

You can use corn flour to replace wheat flour in cookies, but the result will be a finer textured and more brittle cookie. For recipes that require the elasticity of the gluten in wheat, a good result will require the addition of gluten, or an acceptable equivalent.

What is the function of egg in chocolate chip cookies?

Eggs in baking have two main functions. They act like glue to hold and bind the batters and doughs together so that they do not fall apart while baking, and they can assist in making the baked good lighter, fluffier, and rise a little in the oven, not to mention that eggs can also give a product a bit of a shine and glaze once baked.

How do you correct using too much vanilla in cookie recipe?

I don't know the scientific answer, but I accidentally put in twice the baking powder in a made-from-scratch cake (1 layer). The batter tasted bitter and then I realized what I'd done. I added 1/4 t. almond extract, tasted it, then added another 1/4 t. It tasted much better.

Where to find Sunshine Raisin Bar Cookie?

Yes. Sunshine Biscuits made a cookie named simply "Golden Fruit Raisin Biscuit". I enjoyed these as a child in the 60's and they were a favorite. As I remember, they were strips about 1/4"x 3" x9" and perforated in a wavy line so you could break them off into smaller pieces. There were maybe 3 or 4 strips in a cellophane package. They were also made in the late 80s, early 90s?) when I bought them regularly at the grocery store here in Tucson, AZ. Keebler (and the momma company Kellogg) has rights to the Sunshine Biscuit Brand and they no longer make these delicious cookies.

FYI, the Vermont Country Store sells something almost identical called the Garibaldi Biscuit Bar, made by Crawford's in England. Very good, but a smidgeon pricey.

You might want to visit Dudley's Bakery site in Santa Ysabe, CA

If you have an ALDI's market in your area, look for their Fit & Active Apple and Raisin Fruit Crisps. They aren't exactly the same, but they're pretty darn close. They also have a Mixed Berry flavor!

What is the difference between crunchy and soft cookies?

Crunchy is used to describe the texture of food that is firm and solid but not hard and is has moisture or juice in it like vegetables and fruits. Crispy is used to describe food texture that is dry and crisp (but again not really hard - if you bite into it, it will break easily producing cracking sound. Hard items do not break easily when you bite it.) without any fluid content like biscuits and crackers.

What food is made with one pound of almond paste one half cup of sugar and three egg whites?

Macaroons are made from ground almonds or almond paste (marzipan), sugar and egg whites.

Use about 2/3 cup each of almonds and sugar and the white of one large or two small eggs.

The three ingredients are beaten together with a pinch of salt until well combined (you can add a little almond extract, but not artificial almond flavour) and then shaped into small balls about 1 inch, or 2.5 cm, in diameter and placed on a baking sheet about 2 inches, or 5 cm apart.

If you like you can press a whole almond gently into the centre.

Bake at 350f or 180c for ten minutes, or until pale gold. Cool completely on a rack before storing in an airtight container lined with paper towels. The macaroons will keep about four days this way; don't refrigerate them.

There are many macaroon recipes available; check them out to see which you prefer. Coconut is a popular ingredient.

The link below has an excellent recipe from the Odense company which makes marzipan and almond products.

They do not. In fact, they do not often eat cookies or so I've heard.

In addition:

Girl Guiding Scotland is a part of Girl Guiding United Kingdom.

Each World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) member country/organization sets their own guidelines for money earning projects for their members, so it is possible that Girl Guiding UK does not sell cookies.

Girl Guiding UK does provide information about a variety of fundraising projects troops may do in their local communities.
