How many kids commit suicide in the US because they are cyberbullied?
Somehow, we have been led to believe that "cyberbullying" is worse than regular old bullying, where real kids in real schoolyards make real threats to real people. It seems that hanging the prefix "cyber-" onto practically anything makes it something new and ever so dangerous.
According to my research, only four instances of teen suicide have ever been associated -- even tenuously -- with "cyberbullying," that is bullying via the internet. We have to compare that number with nearly 2,000 teen suicides -- for whatever reasons -- in the US each year.
The most famous case of teen suicide associated with "cyberbullying" is that of Megan Meier. She committed suicide in Missouri in October 2006 after a period of online romance and recrimination. But Megan had been a psychiatric patient for six years before her death, since the age of 8. She had been diagnosed as being depressed and as having attention deficit disorder (ADD). She had been taking psychiatric drugs such as citalopram, methylphenidate, and ziprasidone for years.
In general, users of terms like "cyberbully" are promoting a political agenda, rather than addressing a real problem. Certainly in this case, after nearly two decades of the internet -- and the appurtenant opportunities for bullying online -- the results are in. Or rather, they're not.

Being a bystander to cyberbullying means witnessing acts of online harassment or bullying and choosing not to intervene or take action. Dear bullies, The boy you punched in the hall today. Committed suicide a few minutes ago. That girl you called an ugly name in class today. Shes a virgin. The boy you called lame. One of the first steps you can take is to add firewalls to your computer so that scams and viruses are less likely to "bug" your computer. Also, make sure not to give out your personal information and only shop on secure websites. These steps will help ensure that some negative activity does not occur.
What types of cyberbullying are there?
Cyberbullies do things differently depending upon the type of type they are. There are four basic types of cyberbullies. They all are:
The Vengeful Angel
The Power-hungry Or Revenge of the Nerds
The "Mean Girls"
The Inadvertent Cyberbully or "Because I Can"
If you mean in terms of actions, here are some possibilities:
1. Defamation - Making up lies about a person and posting them online.
2. Embarrassment - Posting embarrassing things the person actually did or twisting things they said or did into something else and somehow framing them.
3. Hacking and snooping - Gaining unauthorized access to the victim's PC or phone to get information to use against them or to expose.
4. Outing - The bully discloses personal information about the target. Includes information about sexual orientation, drug habits, sexual practices, and other private details.
5. Impersonation - The bully impersonates the victim while acting in a disgusting or illegal manner. The worst form of this is impersonation with the goal of causing the target to become an assault victim.
6. Fake friends - The bully or their accomplices pretend to be friends of the target. They may give bad advice to cause the target to behave in an embarrassing manner, or they may groom the victim into trusting them and then "turn" on them.
7. Insults and name-calling - The bully just calls the target names.
8. Fake photos and videos - The bully creates modified photos or fake videos and posts them online. They might take photos of people doing sexual or illegal things and manipulate the images to include the target's face.

How can cyber bullying be stoped?
This is a complex question likely best answered more by some one with a social background then me, but I will give it a shot.
With the modern increase in reliance on social media such a myspace, facebook and twitter to name a few we find ourselves increasingly exposed to a wider audience and circle of friends then we might have without such things.
Because of the natural anonymous nature of the internet and lack of face to face communication it makes it easier to make cruel or otherwise scathing remarks at a distance because one does not need to see the repercussions of such activities. This is especially true in situations where TRUE anonymous communication is possible, such as the IRC or over some chat mediums.
The only way to truly avoid cyberbullying (and I dislike this term) is to not participate in such social media. The other alternative is to limit your social media exposure to people you know and trust by use of privacy settings. Limit your social circle to those whom you know in real life and whom are close to you and you'll likely reduce, if not eliminate your exposure to "bullying" in these cases.
The other alternative is to recognize that cyberbullying is as effective as you let it be. Without reacting, you fail to give the bully his or her "reward" which is a response in a negative or emotional spectrum. With no positive reinforcement of his or her behavior, the bully eventually looses interest and goes away. Choose to not let it bother you and rise above it.
Hope this helps!
