Cyprus

The main areas of employment in Cyprus are in agriculture, tourism and the service sector, such as banking and retail. However, there is also a significant fishing industry around the coastal areas, and some heavy industry in the cities of Limassol and Paphos.

Cyprus's main exports are agricultural produce (most especially fruit, potatoes and beans), lamb, seafood, light goods such as kitchenware, plastic goods and soft furnishings, and light industrial components. Europe is the main market for it's fruit and vegetables, whilst most of it's other exports tend to go to the Middle East and North Africa.

Very hot. It is the best weather to go to the beach.

Turkey lies directly to it's North; to the East is Syria, and to the South the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. The nearest country to the West is the island of Crete, which is several hundred miles away.

Cyprus is an outdoor living country; because it has high mountain areas, during the winter you can go skiing. In the summer, the mountains are excellent for walking holidays.

Cyprus is also good for eating out; although the cuisine is largely Greek, it has a number of middle-Eastern and Turkish influences; Mezes are very popular - a large number of different dishes served at once. Large helpings are also characteristic of the Cypriot restaurant.

There are some Roman sites to view. Nicosia is interesting to visit - there are only two divided capitals in the world and Nicosia is one of them.

Cyprus gained independence from Turkey in 1878, when the island was transferred fromthe Ottoman Empire to the British one by treaty. However, it continued to be an occupied colony until achieving independence from Britain in 1960.

The background of the flag is white that represents peace. In the middle, there is the map of the island that has the copper colour to represent the historical attachment of Cyprus to this metal. Under the island's map there are olive tree's branches. The branches of the olive tree represent peace as well.

The Cyprus island is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

Being an island, Cyprus isn't directly connected to any continent. It's politically part of Europe (Cyprus joined the EU in 2004), but its nearest large land mass is Asia (it's 75km from Turkey) and it's also close to Africa and the middle-east. Most Cypriots would probably say they were Europeans. Even examining the geology of Cyprus doesn't help much as its on the meeting point between two plates (African and Eurasian).

It's quite a journey! You need to catch a car ferry from Limassol, this can take you to Italy. You then have to cross Europe to one of the cross channel ferry ports and get a ferry to the UK.

Some of them are the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Asinou Church, Kourin Archaeological Site, Choiroitia Neolithis Settlement, Agios Neofytos, Church of St. Lazarus (yes churches can be landmarks too), Limassol Castle.

The Trudos Mountains are a popular attraction, as are Paphos Mosaics.

The most common greeting is 'xerete', which kinda means 'hello' put in posh-talk. The second most common greeting is 'yia', which is short of 'yiasou'. This means both 'hello' and 'goodbye'. Merhaba, Selam or Hosgeldin are commonly used greetings in the Turkish Republic of Cyprus.

You also have greetings such as good morning, "Kalimera", good evening "Kalispera" and Good night, "Kalee neekhta".

But if you want to greet them with a 'Cyprian' way you will say 'Sheretume'!!!:p

Cyprus does not have its own national anthem. Cyprus uses the National Anthem of Greece and the National Anthem of Turkey.
