What is the color of cow's milk?

How does the homogenization process work?

kills bacteria

discovered by Louis pasteur, hence pasturization

(Actually, no. Pasteurisation is what kills germs. Homogenisation has nothing whatsoever to do with germs and everything to do with 'shelf life' because it breaks down the fat in the milk into tiny globules which cannot form again so you don't get any cream at the top of the milk. It damages the structure of the milk and enables the fat in the milk to go into the bloodstream unchanged. As usual the consumer has little choice but to pay top price for second-rate food. As you might guess, I hate homogenised milk and am trying to find a supplier of Pasteurised, non-homogenised milk. - added by Marie Cadavieco)

Do all female cows become dairy milk produces?

No, only the "female cows" do. Male "cows" are not cows. They are bulls or steers, which do not produce milk. Female bovines that have had a calf (or at least two) are called cows and those cows produce milk. Young female bovines that have not had a calf are called heifers, and they are not able to produce milk because they have not had a calf yet.

How long can you store goat milk at room temp?

Not very long.... We used to buy raw goats milk from a farm down the road, and we always made sure to use it within about 3 days because it started to get a funny taste after that. We buy raw cows milk now and it lasts over a week.

It also depends on how clean the milking operation is. If milked properly, it should last 4 to 7 days from milking and assuming proper refrigeration (<5°C). Commercial dairy processors use raw milk before 4 days to ensure best quality.

How many gallons of water must a cow drink to produce one gallon of milk?

Water intake depends on many factors including humidity and air temperature, salinity of the feed, physiological needs/stressors, size of the cow, how much milk that cow produces per milking or per day, location (as in latitude and climate), etc.

This means that numbers will vary. Some sources say two gallons, others claim as much as ten.

There is no "best" breed of dairy cattle. They all have their characteristics that are better than other breeds and other characteristics that are worse than other breeds. However, the most commonly found breed around the world is the Holstein-Freisian, which is considered one of the "best" milking breeds in terms of high milk production. But they cannot outdo the Jerseys in terms of milk fat content.

Can you use whole milk instead of milk replacer when feeding calves?

Straight, unpasteurized milk from a cow, or powdered milk that is derived from unpasteurized milk (see your local large animal vet for the best milk replacer, as brands are sometimes different between countries/states/provinces, but basically are the same). NO SOY MILK REPLACER OR ANY MILK REPLACE THAT COMES FROM PLANT-BASED "MILK." Soy replacer is bad for calves because it doesn't contain the same amount of fats, proteins and calcium, among other nutrients, that is in cow's milk. You will kill your calf faster if you feed plant-based "milk" replacer than if you feed the real milk-based replacer.

What is in milk to make it last longer?

Why do cows that eat green grass produce milk?

The process of milk is not directly linked to the cow's digestive system, no matter what colour of hide the cow is: black, brown, red, white, black-and-white, yellow, orange, etc. Milk becomes white because of the blood that supplies the cells in the alveoli that are found in huge masses in the udder. Milk has similar components to blood, except for hemoglobins and red blood cells which make blood red. These components that are fed to the milk secreting cells by the capillaries are what makes the milk white. Other contributors to the whiteness of milk are proteins called Casein that are found in milk.

Do cows make milk?

Yes, a cow needs to calve before she can produce milk just as with humans and other animals. The method for breeding the cow can be via live cover where she is in with a bull or A.I. (artificial insemination) where the semen is collected from a bull at another location and the vet A.I. the cow in correlation with her ovulation cycle.

What happens to a cow that doesn't get milked for a year?

If a cow is not milked, she will experience a very swollen, sore and tender udder for several days which may subject her to mastitis, but after a little while, she begins to "dry up" or decrease in milk production, and the milk that is in her udder begins to get reabsorbed back into her body. After a few weeks her udder becomes loose and flabby, and she will not be producing milk anymore. A cow will not die if she does not get milked or for some reason stops milk production.

How long does it take for a cows milk sac to dry up?

A few weeks. Often the calf will die of starvation before then, if you either don't milk the cow out and tube the calf with her milk, try to make the calf suckle as much as you can, or if you don't bottle-feed the calf. So make sure you are caring for the calf if the calf can't suckle from his momma.
