I, as a guy, can personally say that if the guy is normal, then he would love to hear the truth, no matter how tough it is. Try to make him understand that what you feel can change (for better of for worse).

If you don't feel comfortable telling him the truth, then don't say anything at all. Try to avoid the conversation in an indirect way. But NEVER lie in this kind of situation.
