The arms of Denmark (three crowned blue lions and nine red hearts in a yellow field) are derived from those of Valdemar II (King of Denmark 1202-1241) of the House of Estridsen.

The meaning of the lions is unknown, although it's very likely they are connected to the two blue lions in a golden shield that feature on the arms of Slesvig.
