A retired dentist. Just because they retire doesn't mean they lose their accreditation. Those are professional boards that certify you meet their requirements. You've met the requirement. A dental student is still a student and therefore doesn't qualify for accreditation as they're not licensed dentists. Lastly, why would the patient have an accreditation unless they're a dentist themselves?
Your dentist should only be charging you the difference between the Aetna allowed fee for the exact service you are getting and the amount that aetna pays to him. The reason I say exact service is because sometimes the insurance companies do what's called downcode, which is basically paying on a code that is similar to what you are having done but the charge is lower. You would still be charged by the dentist the more expensive fee and have to pay the difference. For example if you were getting a tooth colored filling (1 suface): 1 surface filling: (Normal Dr.'s Fee) =$225 1 surface composite: Aetna Fee (not true amounts) =$100 Insurance says they will pay as if it were the silver= 80% of $30= $24 Your total copay =$76. Even though the insurance company only considered that they would pay for a silver filling, y ou are responsible for the dif between the true service and their portion. Your doctor can not still charge you the $225

I just experienced the exact same issue last week. Last week was 3 weeks since I had 4 wisdom teeth and one bottom left molar extracted. On last Tuesday, I was eating cereal and heard a very large crack or pop in the lower left side of mouth. I thought I had broken my lower left molar so I went to dentist the following day. The dentist took an xray and examined tooth but could not find any visible crack. Dentist told me to wait a week to see if pain got any better. Pain got worse over the next few days and lower left face started swelling.
I went back to the oral surgeon today and he took another panoramic xray but did not find any visible cracks. Therefore, he wasn't able to give me a definite answer as to what was the root cause of my pain. He checked my mouth and alignment of my bite and could not find any visible problems. However, he explained that if it was a small hair line fracture, that it would not show on the xray. As a precaution, he told me to eat a soft diet for the next month, prescribed me antibiotics for swelling to fight off any potential infection, and take advil as needed for pain. He told me to let him know if pain got worse, swelling continued to increase or if my bite became out of line. If it is a fracture, he explained that it could get worse and move out of alignment if not careful when using jaw over the next month. If this happens, then it would require wiring jaws together for healing.
I thank God that the diagnosis wasn't a visible fracture that required mouth wiring. However, I am convinced based on the amount of pain and temporary swelling that occurred that there is some type of fracture.
Let me know more details of your experience and how your jaw is doing now.
