Which alkali metal is used to treat manic depression?

Lithium is the alkali metal commonly used to treat manic depression (bipolar disorder). It helps stabilize mood and reduce the frequency and severity of manic episodes in individuals with bipolar disorder.

How rare is it to have multiple personalities?

Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) is a rare condition, with a prevalence thought to be less than 1% of the general population. It is often associated with a history of severe childhood trauma or abuse. Treatment typically involves therapy to integrate the different personalities into a cohesive sense of self.

Can doctors test for neurotransmitters and if they can how accurate are these tests and why is such testing not routinely done with bipolar patients before prescribing medications?

Currently, there are no reliable tests available to measure neurotransmitter levels in the brain. This is because neurotransmitters are typically found in too low of concentrations to be accurately detected through blood or urine tests. Additionally, diagnosing and treating bipolar disorder is typically based on a combination of symptoms reported by the patient, a thorough medical history, and observation by mental health professionals. Medications are prescribed based on the individual's specific symptoms and responses to previous treatments.

Does your body produce a certain chemical when you are sad?

The level of serotonin is lower in people who are sad, so it's the absence, rather than presence of a chemical. However, a certain level of sadness is normal. If it's long-lasting, then it's depression and should be treated with therapy and possibly medication.

Can depression be inherited?

Yes, there is evidence to suggest that depression can have a genetic component and may run in families. However, other factors such as environmental influences and life experiences also play a role in the development of depression.

What alkali metal compounds are used in the treatment of bipolar disorder?

Lithium salts, such as lithium carbonate and lithium citrate, are commonly used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. These compounds help stabilize mood and reduce symptoms of mania and depression in individuals with bipolar disorder.

Is bipolar disorder carried on a sex chromosome?

It is less inheritable than other mental disorders such as ADHD and schizophrenia, however there is strong evidence that it is an inherited condition.

It is also possible that it is caused by childhood trauma, or possibly even birth defects, affecting the volume of the prefrontal cortex (the 'mood' centre of the brain)

As for the original question, no gene has been identified as yet as being responsible for the condition, so it isn't possible to say that it is or is not carried on a sex chromosome; but yes, there is a good chance it is carried on a chromosome

Name 4 neurotransmitters that may be involved in mental illness?

  1. Serotonin: Known to regulate mood, anxiety, and stress levels.
  2. Dopamine: Involved in motivation, reward processing, and movement control, imbalances linked to schizophrenia and depression.
  3. Norepinephrine: Regulates attention, arousal, and stress responses, imbalances associated with anxiety and depression.
  4. Glutamate: Functions as an excitatory neurotransmitter, linked to various mental health conditions including schizophrenia and mood disorders.

What body systems are effected by bipolar and why are they affected?

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but several factors seem to be involved in causing and triggering bipolar episodes:

Biological differences. People with bipolar disorder appear to have physical changes in their brains.

Neurotransmitters. An imbalance in naturally occurring brain chemicals seems to play a significant role in bipolar disorder and other mood disorders.

Hormones. Imbalanced hormones may be involved.

Inherited traits. Bipolar disorder is more common in people who have a blood relative

Environment. Stress, abuse, significant loss or other traumatic experiences may play a role.

Is the south pole-aitken basin the largest and deepest depression found thus far in the solar system?

South Pole Aitken Basin (diameter 2500km) is not the largest known impact crater. That distinction lies with Utopia Planitia Basin (3500km) on Mars. However, SPA is the deepest known impact basin in the Solar System at 13 kilometers.

If proven, the hypothesized Borealis basin, on Mars, would be the largest impact basis, at more than 10000 km in diameter.

Can you give blood if you're taking medication for bipolar disorder?

Yes. Most of the drugs used in psychoactive disorders have relatively short half-lives, so even trace amounts would quickly get metabolized and eliminated by the new host. In any case, the Red Cross has guidelines for donors on certain medications (see link below).

Can you inherit depression from your parents?

While there is a genetic component to depression, it is not directly inherited like physical traits. Having a family history of depression can increase the risk of developing it, but environmental factors and individual experiences also play a significant role in the development of the disorder. Therapy and other interventions can help manage and treat depression, regardless of its origins.

What are the families of meteorological depression?

The main families of meteorological depressions are extratropical cyclones, tropical cyclones, and mesocyclones. Extratropical cyclones are large weather systems that form outside the tropics, while tropical cyclones are intense storms that form over warm ocean waters. Mesocyclones are smaller-scale rotating updrafts typically associated with severe thunderstorms.

What is ciporex medication used for?

What is your reaction about suicide?

extremely serious. i myself used to be suicidal majorly. so it is definitely a non-joking matter. if ppl joke around with it, ppl will start to think, oh so suicide is funny? ok I'll do it. and it's soooooo not a funny thing. I've had a lot of friends kill themself. it sucks from my prospective. at one of my friends funerals, the pastor said "he solved a temporary problem with a permanent solution". it is sooo true. there are other things to do instead of one killing oneself. get help, see a pro at handling this. or call a hotline about it. it is the most serious thing ever. talk to someone you trust with your life, i did and that saved my life, literally, that's all i have to say.

As a mature adult, concern about any aspect of the tradgedys or possible tradgedys.

What neurotransmitters are involved in bipolar disorders and what do they do?

Dysregulation of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, is linked to bipolar disorder. Dopamine is involved in reward and pleasure, while serotonin regulates mood and anxiety. Norepinephrine plays a role in arousal and stress response. Imbalances in these neurotransmitters can contribute to mood swings and other symptoms of bipolar disorder.

What do you do if you really hate your life and you cry everyday and want someone to talk to and seriously think about ending your life?

Most of these answers are only being said so that the writers feel good about themselves. Listen closely.

I have depression too, and there are seriously times when I am 100% prepared to END it. What stops me? My brother. Focus on your loved ones. Think of how much they would suffer if you left.

Your skin isn't paper, don't cut it.

Your smile isn't a sneeze, don't cover it.

Your are not a book, don't judge yourself by your cover

And most importantly, your life isn't a film. Don't end it.

I hope this answer encouraged you to at least try to get some help. I hate therapists, so I am personally stuck, so whatever I can do to help you or anyone else is important to me. Stay strong.

Is bipolar disorder in one parent inherited by offspring?

Yes. Children with one bipolar parent have a 30% chance of developing bipolar disorder. Even children of bipolar parents who do not develop bipolar disorder are at increased risk (compared to children who do not have a bipolar parent) for other psychopathology such as ADHD, learning disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, etc.

Children with two bipolar parents are at an even greater risk of developing bipolar disorder.

Do you have depression?

I think this is a very personal question and should not be asked on Answers.com. Plus there is over thousands of people on Answers.com. Whats the point in asking?

Answer

I believe that most people can suffer from a mild form of depression at some point in their lives. Something happens which makes us withdraw into our shell. It does not last long as there will always be something or someone who will prise that shell open, and we are none the worst for our experience. We may even have learned something from what we went through.

If you are dating a women who is bipolar what should you expect and how can you handle the highs and lows without making things worse for her or you?

== == == == The following answer is provided by someone who does not have bipolar. People with bipolar are people and they're all different. Some do fine without meds.

from below .. "If she suddenly becomes super happy one moment and then flies into rages or becomes extremely depressed" sorry, it doesn't work like that. --

If this woman is not seeking therapy or on medication I am sorry to say that you are in for the ride of your life if she doesn't follow doctor's orders. SHE MUST take her medications according to doctor's instructions and if she does she should just be fine and the only problems you both should have are normal ones. If she persists on not taking medications or playing around with her dosage without seeing her doctor then don't be afraid to talk to her and tell her to smarten-up. 75% of people that are on some type of medication don't listen to their doctor and don't work with their doctor to adjust dosages and they will often quit the medication (some medications shouldn't be dramatically stopped) or adjust the dosage themselves as they see fit. Go into this relationship with eyes wide open and if you are committed to her then realize you need to communicate well. If she suddenly becomes super happy one moment and then flies into rages or becomes extremely depressed you know something is up and she is either not taking her medications or the dose needs to be adjusted. DON'T BE AFRAID to suggest this to her! If she isn't willing to work with her doctor or look after herself then you are going to have make a decision as to whether you want to stay in a relationship with her. People who suffer from brain chemistry disorders are not abnormal people and with some understand re bi-polar there is no reason you couldn't have a good relationship together. Some people feel being on especially a medication for a condition of the brain such as depression (includes bi-polar) etc., is a weakness and it is no different than having diabetes or some other illness. Not so long ago (and even today it can happen) people often will look their nose down at a person with a mental condition. It's sad because the person looking their nose down at the person is ignorant and knows little about this mental condition and it hurts the person that has it. Thus, they feel different and don't always feel they are like anyone else. If all of us were honest in ourselves we each have a flaw in our personality that could possibly need correcting by a therapist or even in some cases medications. There are many people walking around in society that don't even know they are depressed. Although I didn't suffer from bi-polar (can be genetic) I did suffer from panic attacks and Agoraphobia years ago. I had gone through a bad divorce, was working hard, remarried a few years later to a wonderful man and then my father suffered a debilitating stroke. I basically burned the candle at both ends. At this time when I got the panic attacks little was known about it and I had to leave my job (couldn't cope.) The company I worked for was wonderful and gave me full pay for the whole year, but I had to be fair about it and I gave up my job. It devastated me. To make a long story short, I did eventually find a doctor that knew all about panic attacks, was put on an antidepressant and I've been fine ever since. I no longer have to be on antidepressants because while I was on them I also took counseling and learned "Cognitive Therapy" techniques as tool to deal with stress. I now eat well, exercise and fill my head with more up-lifting things and so when the rotten things in life hit me between the eyes I can handle it and I'm a much stronger person today than I was before. For those that couldn't understand my illness I knew within myself I was a good person, strong in spirit, prayed every night and I can tell you honestly that I didn't get well alone, but faith in God got me through it. I do believe in miracles! I was lucky to have support from family and friends and one wonderful husband, but I too worked hard to get better. I feel I have much more empathy towards people and can understand their problems and have more patience when they aren't always kind to me. I think you should give this relationship a shot. Talk to her about it. Go on the computer and ask about bi-polar because I believe when you learn about something then it's not such a mystery and so frightening. Good luck

Can a Vitamin D deficiency mimic bipolar disorder?

It is unlikely. Vitamin D deficiency is most commonly associated with bone problems. However, the full interaction of hormones and other body chemistry on the functioning of the brain is not fully understood. One possible connection between Vitamin D and bipolar is that the main source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight. Lack of exposure to sunlight can trigger a mood disorder closely associated with bipolar: seasonal affective disorder.

Which statement accurately reflects current research findings?

Current research findings suggest that regular exercise can improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of developing certain mental health disorders. Additionally, there is growing evidence that a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is associated with a reduced risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.

Is there a type of mental illness that involves people having imaginary friends?

Yes, having imaginary friends can be a symptom of certain mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder. However, having imaginary friends in childhood is a common and developmentally normal phenomenon. It's important to consider the context and age of the individual when assessing whether it is indicative of a mental illness.
