Is the treatment the same for a mentally ill person and a psychotic person?
The difference between the 2 is huge.....being mentally ill can range from having depression to bipolar disorder, to just having a phobia of something or grieving for a loved one...when we think of psychotic, we think of a screaming person kicking and destroying things and being restrained like in the movies. This may never happen ever to a mentally ill person. A mentally ill person may take medication to help with symptoms and receive individual counseling and/or behavioral therapy to help talk out problems and learn coping skills to overcome their challenges in everyday life. Being in a state of mind that is psychotic requires immediate action...they may be restrained so they dont harm themselves or others, and the person is usually put into an inpatient psychiatric unit in a hospital so that the proper meds can be administered to help with their symptoms or even to calm them down...usually after a few days, the person is fine and can be on their way. Very rarely does a person need to stay in a hospital the rest of their life.
Why are bipolar people so hard to work with yet so fun?
Because stress is the trigure of these episodes that make us bipolar: being overly happy, or overly sad. Normal people have shorter wavelengths between the two phases but bipolar people have extreme wavelengths between the two. Bipolar people can be in the manic phase for years until a stressful trigure, and boom, the cycle begins between happyness and sadness and once you understood bipolar 1, you will know why..like me for example...we fear stresses of life and have anxiety that the cycle will begin again, so medications keeps us balanced like a normal person. Bipolar 2 is less severe form of bipolar 2, but i've had/have both and can say bipolar 1 is painfull... We suffer alot and it sucks mighty bull balls... later :))
You have to keep on keeping on because you have kids. Don't give up!!
The other stuff is just stuff. The thing is that small changes can make big differences in our lives. For me, I was clearer on making changes by pretending that I was my mom and telling myself what I needed to do. What things that you enjoyed have you stopped doing? Try them out again.
Otherwise, most workplaces have outside help for counseling that is confidential and free. You may need anti-depressants to help you focus on the next thing. Don't give up!!
For the job issue, it is easier to get some handle on the change you need to make by brainstorming. Forget what you can't do: what do you want to do? You are never too old to take classes (funding is often available) or get other training. If you hate the job you are in, start looking elsewhere and focus on that. You COULD change your attitude about the job, but sometimes it is more that the people, company and environment are toxic to you.
If you are unhealthy, clean up your act. Stop smoking, take walks (start easy, then extend to longer ones), eat a balanced diet and drink enough water. Breathe. Take your vacation days and do things that stimulate your interests.
You need to find some joy in your life; friends will follow. Take the kids and do something outside of the home--volunteer, go to a free local festival, etc. Take the time to turn things around and you'll be better off and, like the rest of us, find that your 40's are a great time of freedom and enjoyment. For family, most of us find "family of the heart" works fine. Really, don't quit now.
What is an example of lithium?
Most people have heard the word Lithium to describe a medication, primarily for the treatment of the manic phases of Bi-Polar Disorder. Chemically, Lithium is actually a metal; shiny, powdery and very lightweight. It's used in the manufacturing of ceramics and glass, and has many other uses.
The compound used for treating Bi-Polar Disorder is actually Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). It's prescribed to help lessen the severity of manic phases associated with Bi-Polar Disorder, is often referred to as a mood stabilizer, and is usually prescribed for long-term control of manic symptoms.
The dosage of Lithium carbonate varies from person to person and the level of Lithium carbonate in the blood must be carefully monitored. Blood tests are taken at least every two months, more frequently if the patient shows an abnormal sensitivity to the medication. The reason for monitoring the blood levels is because an effective dose is, usually, close to a toxic dose. In other words, taking just enough is often very close to taking too much.
Lithium carbonate is a very effective mood stabilizer. There are, however, many others on the market that are quite effective and don't demand such rigorous monitoring.

Does vicodin lead to depression and mood swings?
Absolutely! I just stopped taking Vicodin after being on it (1 pill a day 5/500) for 5 years straight. I was noticing I was becoming severely depressed, suicidal, extremely lethargic and wanting to sleep all day long. After being off of Vicodin for only 5 days I feel like a new person! I am having trouble sleeping now since I've been taking Vicodin every night to help me relax/sleep...but Sleep MD is helping me in this transition. If you feel you are becoming addicted to this drug - you probably are! Consult with your doctor to help you get off of it. It will consume and wreck your life if you don't seek help!
How do you tell your parents you think you are bipolar?
If you feel comfortable telling them yourself, ask to talk to them when they're not in a stressful mood. Have some information about it written down, so they can read through it, after you've told them. It would also be good if you know of a psychologist or someone you could go to for therapy, so they know there is help for it. If you're not comfortable telling them, go to your school counsellor or an adult your close to, explain the situation to them, and see if they will tell your parents. I was in the same situation a few years ago with depression, and the school counsellor had to tell my mum. It is a really hard thing to do, so do whatever your most comfortable with. Remember to let your parents know that there are SO MANY ways to get treatment for bipolar- google it- you'll get so many sites. Hope everything goes well for you! Good luck.
Is being lazy a sign of depression?
One of the big ones! Depression causes you to have a feeling of "slowing down." You feel sluggish, have no energy, and feel tired all the time. Part of this is because you have lower levels of a brain chemical called norepinephrine - that's the one which helps your brain signals move along quickly and efficiently!

What are the effects of bipolar on daily life?
Bipolars must always keep their mood in mind when dealing with daily life. If you are depressed, it is hard to motivate yourself to get out of bed and go to work, or to socialize. If you are manic, it is hard to keep from saying or doing impulsive things that will get you into trouble. You need to keep track of things that you know are going to trigger a mood swing, and avoid them or plan ahead to counteract them. Sometimes it is hard to keep taking medication when your mood gets out of control, so you need a system to remind you to do that always. And you need to see a therapist on a regular basis to be sure you are doing everything you can to lead a normal life.
