My 3yr old son had blue icing from my dad's birthday cake and the next day his bowels were blue/green. I think if it's on a regular basis I would call the pediatrician but just once in a while I'm not alarmed.

it depends on how you look at it. its primarily chemical because without the chemicals in your body like pancreatic juices and hydrochloric acid, you could'nt break them down. but physically you chew your food before you swallow it for those chemical processes to occur. its safe to say however that the CHEMICAL part is absolutely essential for the proper digestion of food.

For many years, the hypothalamus was thought to be the key to control of food intake. This view derived from classic experiments in which food intake was studied in rats with lesions in various areas of the brain. Such studies clearly identified two regions in the hypothalamus that dramatically influence feeding behavior: * Lateral hypothalamus (hunger center): animals with lesions in this area become anorectic and lose weight. * Ventromedial hypothalamus (satiety center): animals with lesions in this area overeat and become obese. Subsequent studies showed that, although these hypothalamic centers are clearly very important in controlling hunger and satiety, they don't explain the whole story.

Basically a digestive enzyme helps to break down the food whether it is in the mouth (I forget the enzyme present in saliva) or in the intestine, Digestive hormones serve to regulate digestion for example the pH in the stomach is regulated by Gastrin. The churning action of the stomach wall accomplishes mechanical digestion. Mechanical digestion begins in the mouth and along with chemical digestion, ends in the small intestine.

No. There is evidence that spicy food cannot burn a hole in your stomach. It's proven.

The small intestine has small tiny projections called "villi". These projections increase the surface area for absorption. The large intestine however lacks these structures.

Chyme is simply the food that has been digested in the stomach. It doesn't have an exact job, except to be further digested and and absorbed in the small intestine.

The wall of the small intestine has folds that bear fingerlike prjections called villi. Villi in turn have projections called microvilli. The products of digestion are absorbed by microvilli and they enter the blood capillaries and the lacteals of the Villi.

It turns pink when there is more acid in the environment when the fat is broken down into fatty acid.

The Renal System removes excess water from the blood and filters the blood, removing the waste products of cell metabolism and passing this out of the body along with the excess water. Thus the system keeps the blood clean and maintains blood plasma volume and osmotic potential.

When the external temperature is '100' degrees, the body perspires to rid itself of heat via evaporation. During this process some salt is lost thereby creating a deficiency of sodium chloride (dependent on the amount of time subject is exposed to said heat) in the body. To suddenly ingest 'ice cold water' will have several effects: 1. Involuntary contraction of throat and stomach muscles plus 'brain freeze' from the sudden drop of internal temperature in a localized area, namely the neck. 2. Sudden rehydration of the already thirsty body without replacing the missing sodium chloride can cause muscle cramps. In some cases extreme duress ensues. I have neither heard nor read about any long term or 'lasting' effects from this phenomenae. Most likely due to the unpleasant nature of the effects, people don't do it often. (Modification of behaviour by pain response.) Likewise, this should have a negligible effect on the gastrointestinal system. (At most a few burps and maybe some expulsion of methane fron the anus, at a later time.) As a child, I too ate popsicles at a furious rate as was the custom in Florida. Outside of the above mentioned symptoms (brain freeze, burping and farting) I have never experienced, nor anyone I knew experienced, long-term effects. I would be more concerned about the ingredients of that popsicle than I would it's temperature. Make them 'home-made' with fresh juice and let the kids have at'em!

The main job of the large intestine is to eliminate solid waste matter in the form of feces. The other important jobs that it does are: reabsorption of water and minerals (electrolytes) and some vitamins.
