Digital Cameras

The film in a camera is what actually records the image focused on it by the lens. Film serves the same function as the sensor in your digital camera, but it does so differently. Film is coated with an emulsion made of gelatin in which are light sensitive salts of silver. When exposed to light, these silver halides as they are called become able to be developed chemically into an image which faithfully records the lights and darks of the original scene. The sensor in your digital camera does the same, except that it doesn't require chemical development to view the image.

There are 3 formats that are most used. There are more but the most common are:

It depends on how you like your shots and which way you prefer to develop them. Always go with an SLR. The name brand is your choice. Remember it is not the camera that makes it, it's the photographer, and your own perception on which you would like to capture your image. Whether you prefer a digital SLR or non-digital is your choice.

There realy is not a percentage that should be used, and not really a set amount. As a wedding photographer and the owner of my own company, I would expect no tip unless I went way out of my way for a family. Generally if the photographer is working for someone else (another photographer, studio, etc.), then I would tip $50 to $100, maybe as much as $200 if you receive really good service. I would not tip if the photographer is working for himself. If he/she brings an assistant, then tip the assistant.

Some people go as far as waiting for the proofs before tipping. This is completely up to you as the client.

HD video is a television standard that contains approximately 5 times the amount of data as standard definition television signals.

HD is formatted as either 1080 line or 720 line. Both line counts are HD. 1080 line signals can be interlaced or progressive scan. (Interlaced requires two fields, or passes of the display, to fully update the image, progressive fully updates on every field)

Frame rates can be 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 50 or 59.94 frames per second depending on the region or the type of content.

HD signals in the studio are always digital whereas SD signals can still be processed as analog.

Domestic equipment carries HD only on HDMI connectors. New equipment does not support HD on analog interfaces to reduce unauthorized copying of material.

HD is always 16 : 9 aspect ratio (wide screen). In comparison, SD can be either 4 : 3 or 16 : 9 although wide screen SD is largely confined to European markets.

Yes. There are scanners designed specifically for this purpose, sometimes called negative scanners (which is mildly inaccurate). They are typically much more expensive than plain old flatbed scanners. You might want to look at the ones made by Nikon, or if you don't mind something used and older, try to find a Minolta film scanner.
