It's not fun. Look at the upper radiator hose, where it curves to the engine behind the alternator.

Drain your coolant, loosen the alternator support bracket and move the alternator away as much as you can. The thermostat is hidden down there.

On the bottom of the door mount is a screw. Remove it, and push the case up. There's four 5/16 bolts. If it's power mirrors, there's a wiring harness inside the door you'll have to disconnect.

i had to use shims in mine but the bolts were too short so i got longer ones, finally no more adjusting while driving on windy days

It's been awile but I've owned half a dozen ram vans over the years and here's how I remember the procedure: Removing the engine cover (doghouse) on the full size ram Vans from 1972-2003 is just like in the G-series Chevy and GMC full-size vans from 1973-96. Pull back the floormat or carpet around the rear of the doghouse (the part that faces you if you're in the driver or passenger seat that has the cuphoplders and the storage bin and) and peek under where the DH meets the van floor. Youll see four bolts that attach four tabs welded to the bottom of doghouse cover (2 on each side left and right) where it meets the floor at the 4, 5 7 & 8 o'clock positions. Unscrew these with the appropriate socket wrench (I think it was a 1/2 inch). Then, locate the two firewall straps mounted to the cover on each side (one to the right of driver's knee and one to left of passenger's knee just under the main dashboard cover). They're kind of like old-time suitcase latches. Unlatch them and gently rock the cover back and forth until the seal breaks in the weatherstripping on the floor and the cover itself (it can get stuck together due to engine heat). Gently pull the cover straight back best as you can and voila, the engine is right there in all it's dirty glory. Installation is the reverse, but first be sure you have the cover and four weatherstrip gaskets lined up properly, and that you have no wires (spark, harness or otherwise) pinched in the weather strip meetings. Then latch the two latches and reinstall the (4) bolts holding the cover doen to the floor. SNUG UP AND THEN TIGHTEN 2-3 TURNS. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN (the DH is thin metal and the brackets sometimes pull out if you do, so dont). Hope this helps. Good luck, Mark

I have one - a B3500 (15 passenger). It is set up to run 12,500 GCWR and the van weighs #6700 loaded with our kids & gear, so the net available for towing is #5800.

Have vehicle scanned to determine the problem

I just did it on my 99 Dodge 1500 Ram Van. Simply ground pin 1 of the diagnostic controller under the steering wheel, the dark green wire, upper left one. Then turn the ignition to the run position, do not crank it. The door locks should cycle. Then press lock on unlock on the remote to be programmed. The door locks should cycle again to show the remote has been programmed. Repeat the process for any additional receivers to be programmed. Worked great for me, and saved me 40 something bucks from the dealer to have them do it. Good luck

On the bellhousing

The firing order for a 1978 318 and 360 is: 1843657 with the distributor rotating clockwise. Timing should be set around 4 degrees btdc (before top dead center).

Check the distributor cap

Just about anything can be fixed, it's the amount of money you're willing to spend that makes it possible or impossible.

Start simple- check the fuses and battery. If those are good check the starter.

Open the hood and it up on the firewall about mid way across, look for something that's usually silver in color with a screw on each side, and it has a plug with a phillips head screw in the centre that hold the plug to the regulator, that's the voltage regulator.

You can find a diagram of the fuse board for a 2002 plate transit van inside the owner's manual. You can also find it in the vehicle's Chilton manual.
