Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

How long do big dogs survive?

It depends on the breed and on the individual. Large dogs usually live 10-12 years, while smaller dogs can live up to 14 or more years. However, dogs with illnesses such as cancer and diabetes might live much shorter lives.

Will a dog calm down after being neutered?

When you first get him back, he should not act like anything, they release them before the anesthetics have completely wore off so he will probably sleep a lot when he gets home. Other than that he might become a little less aggressive, and his personality MIGHT and i stress the might, change a little but he will still be your dog.

Why would your dog have a bloody watery stool?

If your dog has a bloody, watery stool you need to take it to the vet immediately. There's no way to tell what is causing it unless someone who is trained in those matters sees the dog. If there are other symptoms, too, like not drinking water, listlessness, vomiting, etc. it could be Parvo or other serious diseases. Regardless, a dog having that type of stool needs to be taken to a vet! ~Deb~

Can sibling dogs mate?

Most likely yes, but if you allow inbreeding later on down the line there may be genetic deformities. It should be discouraged, as to keep the gene pool wide and deep.

This should be avoided, I agree. I have a dog who is a result of an accidental breeding of mother to son, and he appears to have vision problems, as well as issues with aggression to other dogs and his intelligence level. This is only one botched breeding. With repeated breedings of closely related dogs, who knows how bad the dog might be?

Why do dachshunds lick their feet?

The most common reason for licking feet is they have a developed habit of it. My two dogs (one is a mini schnauzer and the other is a schnauzer terrier mix) lick their feet and their bottoms. My terrier mix licks her feet because she has arthritis (she is nine years old), and my mini schnauzer licks his feet when he's bored (he's only two years old).

How can you train a dog like a human?

hi,

It is a very general and obvious question which may come to anyone's mind that how can dogs be trained. The very first and the most important thing to be kept in mind is that you should not consider a dog in training to be just your pet. There are mainly 10 steps to train a dog, you can follow here:

  1. Choose a dog that fits in with your lifestyle
  2. Devote 15-20 minutes a couple of times a day to training
  3. Give your dog a name that is practical
  4. Make sure the entire family knows the dog's training goals
  5. Do crate training
  6. Go for walks and teach him how to walk on a lead/leash
  7. Teach your dog to come
  8. Keep in mind that all dogs have different temperaments.
  9. Always reward success and good behavior with praise, and sometimes a small treat.
  10. Always end training on a positive note.

Can dogs eat cigarettes?

No, the tobacco will not kill the dog if the dog ingests it. The dog may get sick and vomit after eating tobacco. The filter on the cigarette is more dangerous to the dog if it eats it. Call a vet if you think your dog has eaten a cigarette filter.

When does male does male dog stop lifting his leg and urinating?

Aim, mostly. Urination for dogs is not simply a matter of getting rid of excess fluid. They use it to establish their scent within a territory.

It's to do with scent marking their territory. The further up the tree they get the bigger and therefore more poweful they appear to be to subsequent 'investigating' dogs.

Another answer:It varies, but most male dogs start lifting their leg to pee when they're about a year old, as their instinct to establish territorial dominance kicks in.

Why do dogs sleep at the foot of the bed?

Well known dog trainers suggest that this behavior is a way a dog claims you, this is considered rude. The dog is saying `I am the boss'. To fully enjoy your dog, you must be the boss ( the pack leader).

Why is there blood in your dogs poo?

It depends on how much and what color. Dark blood (black or brown) means it is coming from the pups stomach or high up in the digestive system and requires Vet. care.

Bright red blood and just a small amount could mean hard stools (poop) and has broken a blood vessel in the rectal area, this means you need to change the puppies diet to softer more easily digested foods. Lots of bright red blood and every time it defecates is serious and should be seen to by a vet. ASAP.
There can be a number of reasons. Please take the pup to a vet and have him/her checked out.

Why does a fixed female dog hump humans?

What i have heard is that they're not doing it for sexual reasons, but doing it to show dominance. You must teach your dog that he is at the bottom of the pack and not the top. A tip i've read in training books is to pretend to eat their food.

Why do dogs like the sound of a whistle?

Why do dogs sniff their own urine?

They are marking their territory. They will either smell another dog's urine and urinate over that or, they will mark their own territory such as the backyard/frontyard, etc.

it tells them that that is their territory. if one dog, wolf, ... sees anouther dog mark its territory onto theirs, it will usually start a fight. think about this example to help you understand if you get a glass of milk and you take a drink, that cup is your territory until you are done. lets say your little brother or sister comes into the room and takes a drink out of your cup. you get mad because that cup is your territory. it is the same thing with dogs, its normal.

What dogs smell, whether it's urine or another dog's butt, tells the dog just about everything about the other dog. Dogs have millions more scent receptors than do humans and they way the process smells is very different than we do. For dogs, scents are comparable, almost, to how we perceive things by sight. The smell of another dogs urine tells them everything about that dog -- it's sex, whether it's in season, whether the other dog is healthy or not, etcetera. Once they determine what the scent is telling them, they pee over it to mark the territory as their own or just to let anyone else coming by that they were there, thus leaving their own information-filled scent.

How do you stop your dog from jumping and scratching the door when you are not home especially when it rains or storms?

teach her how to knock

If you stop her from scratching, how will you know when she wants to come in?

^^^^^^^^^^^

I'm sorry, but the vibe I get from the person who wrote this response is that they would apparently like their house to be ruined by repetitive scratching?

I have experienced my puppy scratching on the door as well, and even our sliding screen door.

One of the things I have read said to ignore the scratching. When you open a door for a dog that is jumping or scratching, you are teaching them that those behaviors open the door!

My dog hates the sound of coins being shaken around in an empty soda can. I have been teaching her that scratching or jumping on the door results in the obnoxious noise that she hates, and it has been working pretty well so far.

What does the saying Three-dog night mean?

I hear tell it was from the Eskimos. If it was cold one of the dogs would sleep in the igloo with the humans for warmth since the dogs body temp was 104 or close ...that'd add warmth to the sleeping quarters. IF it was really cold then two dogs would be allowed into bed...AND IF it was really really reallyl cold.... you guessed it.... it'd be a "3 dog nite"

How do you potty train a poodle?

There are many different methods that vary from breed to breed but I think this one works the best, especially for small dogs that you can easily carry:

  1. Get a "pee mat" for your pup that is quite big and soaks up things and put it in a quiet corner in your house.
  2. Your puppy will pee in the house at first, you must admit this but you can encourage it to step outside and do its business in the garden.
  3. When your pup takes a leak don't say anything to it, pick it up wihtout stroking or fussing over it and place it on the mat. Make sure you DO NOT shout at it or else it will think it's bad to pee and will get a negative view of you.
  4. Whenever the pup wals off the mat take it back there but don't wait for it to come off. Each time don't say anything apart from telling it to sit.
  5. Eventually, when the dog sits, leave it there for 5 minutes and then return. You can now fuss over your dog an tell it how good it is. Play with it and stroke it and move the mat out of the way.
  6. Over time your dog will start to associate peeing with the mt and should go there when it wants to pee. Everytime you see this praise the dog.
  7. Eventually when you see the dog walking over to the pee mat, bring it outside and reassure it to go there. If it goes on the grass praise it but never tell your dog off.
  8. When your pup has got the idea that toilet = outside you can get rid of the pee mat and continue to praise the dog for going in the garden until it becomes normal to it.
  9. Enjoy your pee free house!
