Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

Do dogs need a lot of attention?

Yes and they are very hard to train. We have a 2 year old Yorkie that is like a child to us. It took almost a year for him to realize he had to go outside and pottie. They are great dogs once you get them trained but do require a lot of attention. They are very smart dogs. When he knows it is time for bed, he will get his bed out of his cage and bring it to the front room.

How can you get your Yorkie to quit barking so much at the neighbors?

when ever they start to bark, hold their favorite treat in front of their nose until they stop, then don't give it to them, and when they stop barking, give it to them. or as soon as they start to bark, put a leash on them, when they bark, pul quickley to the side then put the leash back where it was, but be sure not to pull your dog. it should be in the same spot when you end the correction. it is also a good idea to put them in a sit or down and stay. this tecnique OS very usefull at meal time, t.v. time, or whenever guests arrive. you can also use it to stop your dog from jumping. don't yell at them if they get out of they're sit, down, or stay before you release them... just camly put them back in position and firmly but withought yelling or anger say stay again.

Do corn snakes get along with dogs and guinea pigs?

they might try as guinea pigs smell like their normal food, but the snake won't be successful as guinea pigs are normally 3-6 times their normal food size.

How many months does it take for a dog to be house trained?

Yes it is possible it also has to do what type of dog it is. Like if it is a "smart"dog then yes it is possible. A had two puppies and now they are like 4 years old they are both were house trained when they were 9 months.

Also just be nice and polite to the dog but stay on top of them if they do not do what you want the dog to do.

How does a dog communicate?

A lot of dog communication isn't vocal. For instance, if you ever notice your dog stopping at every couple of houses to do its business, your dog is scent marking, which is basically saying This is my territory, don't mess with me.

If you see a dog with their ears down, and tail tucked between its legs, the dog is being submissive, normally towards another dog.

Most dogs will bark at other dogs, or at least give them some recognition. If they do bark, it may not necessarily be in a bad way. Most dog breeds are descended from one common relative, the wolf. Since wolves live and hunt in packs, dogs are social by nature, so it is normal for them to get excited when they see a new dog. Some dogs, like terriers, might be quick to try to show their authority, but others, possibly a golden retriever, couldn't care less.

Every action has a meaning if you look hard enough. Every dog is an individual, so they may have different behavioral patterns than their breed standard, but there are definitely some common communications.

Why do dachshunds lick everything?

Many breeds of dogs can do this especially the smaller dogs. Some do it because it's soothing to them while others do it because they are nervous. Dachshunds are a breed that certainly need a lot of love and attention and considered 'lap dogs.' I use to own a female long haired Dachshund and she was most affectionate. She'd demand to have her little blanket warmed up in the clothes dryer for bedtime during winter months and would hit my leg with her nose. You guessed it ... I got up and immediately did it. She'd lay in it with a little sigh. Dachshunds do not like changes to routine either. If you are redecorating and moving furniture this can put them off or you are working and leaving the dog home. As you know Dachshunds are big dogs in a little body and their demands are many. if it continues please see your vet to be sure there are no other problems causing this.

Do dogs have paws?

Yes, dogs do have paws, just like most of all the other warmblooded mammals! Their paws contain 5 fingers with long nails on them. The "long nails" are called, 'claws'. I hope this answered your question!

Are pit bulls illegal in New Jersey?

Sen. Sharpe James has once again introduced his annual version of the Responsible Pit Bull Ownership Licensing Act (S801). Nearly identical legislation was introduced and soundly defeated in two previous sessions. S801 would allow a municipality to:

Require a special license for all "pit bulls" ($150-700)-including "American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers and any dog determined to be a pit bull type." Licenses may be denied to anyone who has been convicted of a criminal offense or animal cruelty, as well as anyone who lives with someone convicted of those crimes.

Require anyone who owns a dog to prove that it ISN'T a pit bull (municipality will visually inspect the dog to determine whether it is a pit bull). Very few municipalities have staff with any breed identification knowledge or experience.

Require confinement in a permanent enclosure (including a secure pen AND a 6-ft. fence).

Require pit bulls to be muzzled when off owner's property and leashed (3-feet long or less). Also, the leash must be approved by an animal control officer.

Send an animal control officer to inspect the enclosure and the licensee's property at least monthly.

Require liability insurance for owners.

Violators are subject to fine up to $1000/day.

Seized dogs will be placed in no-kill shelter until properly adopted or until the dog dies of natural causes.

S801 is bureaucratic, costly to enforce, and does little to protect the public from dangerous dogs. Please let New Jersey legislators know that communities are best kept safe when laws address all irresponsible owners, not just those who own a particular breed.

Why is my male dog being so protective over my female dog?

Most probably because they have gotten used to each other and feel as if they are responsible over each other. I hope this answered your question.

Why does your dog keep rubbing his butt up and down on your couch?

He is either scenting where he sleeps or is trying to empty his anal sac. Anal sac is positioned just inside his anus and fills with a liquid. It should empty during bowl movement but if not the dog will try to empty it himself by rubbing his bum along the floor or anywhere else he sees fit! You can empty the sac yourself but it's not a nice smell! Go see your vet.

What effect does lasalocid have on dogs?

Small amounts like a calf pellet or two every once in a while are not bad (unless it's a small dog). If the dog eats a large amount it can kill them. The lasalocid will kill off the good bacteria in the dogs digestive tract causing digestive tract failure. If a dog eats a large amount of feed with lasalocid in it, get a probiotic supplement for dogs at the pet store and keep him on them for several days.

Why do dogs like the smell of nasty things?

Well actually, dogs do not always like the smell of the ocean. And usually most dogs love sand and not always the particular smell of the ocean. My dog loves everything about the beach, she even Simms in the water but my other dog hates the beach. Hope this helps.

Are labrador dogs good to jog with?

A Labrador Retriever is a fine jogging companion, as most of the sporting breeds of dogs would be. Even little dogs can be great joggers and there are many, many mixed breeds and hybrid types that would be excellent.

Before starting a jogging routine, have your dog examined by a veterinarian to make sure that your dog is in good physical condition and can cope with the physical strain of running.

Once your dog clears the vet check, take the time to build up the distance of the jog, just as a human athlete would. Use common sense, if the weather is hot, jog early in the morning or in the evening, and bring water for your dog. Your dog's foot pads should be monitored for excessive wear, most dogs don't have a problem running on pavement or sidewalks, but be cautious in extreme hot or cold conditions. If the foot pads (or between the toes) show signs of abrasion or swelling, give time to allow healing, dog "booties" might be a helpful option.

Food should be avoided before immediate strenuous activity. A large meal followed by exercise can lead to Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus Syndrome (GDV), known as "Bloat", which usually requires surgical correction. Water can be given at any time, as long as the volume is limited to small amounts at each offering.

How old can a toy poodle get?

Generally it is around 6 months old. Some dogs don't go into heat until they are passed a year old. Never breed your dog on a first heat. Research before breeding. Find a mentor, but don't just breed her. She will be in heat for at least 21 days. Continue keeping her away from other dogs though until you are absolutely sure she is no longer in heat. I have a dog that stays in heat 5 weeks minimum! She's always been that way.

How often do female dogs come in heat?

Virtually all breeds have two oestrus cycles each year. Initially, the vulva swells and within a day there is a clear discharge, which becomes tinged with blood the next day. This discharge increases in intensity and then slowly diminishes, ending after about ten days. During this time the female becomes more alert and urinates frequently, leaving signals of her impending willingness to mate. Ovulation takes place soon after the discharge has stopped. Only now will the female accept mating. Hormonal changes occur regardless of whether a female is pregnant, which is why there is no simple blood or urine tests to confirm impending motherhood.

Do pit bulls have the strongest bite?
