Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

Dog urine stains out of wooden floors?

Answer if the urine has stained the wood, you can put diluted clorine bleach on a damp cloth a lay it on the spot for a few minutes or wipe the spot with the cloth a couple of times, then let it dry. be aware of the dangers of inhaling clorine. this might raise the wood grain some. use 200 grit sand paper to sand grain, try to find stain to match then varnish

I think that we must be careful when using chlorine or bleach especially around our pets even if it s diluted. Also for some woods this may etch the flooring and thats the last thing we want. there are many odor eliminating products, especially for pet urine and I found one named odorklenz that is made from natural earth minerals and is great at removing the odors without the harmful chemicals or fragrances. The good thing it works so well that your pet wont even pick up the previous urine scent and wont return in that area.

What is a poodle's niche?

Poodles, like all domestic dogs, were bred by humans and as such they do not occupy an ecological 'niche'. One could argue that if you look at the poodle's wolf ancestors, this group diverged into two. There were those that began to approach humans for the food we produced, and those that remained wary of us and avoided us. So you could say there was a niche to cohabit alongside humanity, which one group took advantage of, and became the ancestors of today's domestic dogs.

How do you get a dog to STOP eating acorns?

When dogs ingest acorns, they typically have mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset including vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal comfort. There's also the possibility of obstruction, if there happens to be a large amount of acorn lodged in the GI tract. It's probably best to try and keep your dog from eating them.

If your dog is pregnant can she still go into heat?

No. It's only during a specific stage of the heat cycle when a dog can become pregnant. Once the dog is pregnant, she won't have a heat cycle. Usually the cycle resumes within six months of having a litter of puppies.

Three weeks after weaning a litter (usually when the pups are 5 weeks old) the female dog can be spayed, so she will no longer be able to become pregnant.

Can you get another dog if your previous dog died from parvo in the backyard?

Yes, but if you have an unvaccinated young puppy, you will risk having it die of parvo too.

Parvo - short for parvovirus - is a nasty viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract. In young puppies, it can cause death within a few days from dehydration and toxic shock. The vaccine against it is very effective and is recommended for all dogs, with a three-shot inital series and a yearly booster thereafter. A puppy is not considered completely vaccinated until two weeks after the third shot in the original series.

The virus itself is very hardy and can survive in a kennel or house for years. Cleaning with bleach water (then rinse thoroughly) then with soap and water (then rinse thoroughly) then with an all-purpose sanitizer like Lysol or Pine-Sol (then rinse thoroughly) will get the virus load down, but probably not kill all of it.

How long should a dogs nails be?

You can start after there are 2 months old and it's mainly to get them use to it. I just nipped off the little points of their nails (just a tiny bit off the ends) followed by lots of praise and a treat. As they get older they will be much more behaved while you do this process. If their nails are dark it's best to get the vets to do it. Some will do it for nothing and so will a dog groomer. When you just cut the tips of the dog's nails off this will make the nail recede. Also walking on gravel, cement, etc., will help keep their nails filed down.

Can squirrels eat dog treats?

If he can catch it, he can eat it, just like wolves in the wild will eat them. A dog's digestive system is designed to safely eat raw meat, but a dog that has been raised as a pet will undoubtedly prefer whatever comes from your kitchen. :-)

What are the best methods to keep your gums healthy?

Aside from the normal things your dentist will tell you (flossing, etc.), rinsing or gargling with warm salt water, regularly, is very good for your gums. Wet your toothbrush and then sprinkle it with a layer of salt, then brush your gums, roof of your mouth and tongue, then rinse. Pop some CoEnzyme Q10 supplements in addition to what has been outlined above. It strengthens the gums and the heart.

Are carrots good for dogs?

Raw vegetables are not okay for dogs because they cannot be digested, which will cause blockages in the digestive system.

However they can eat cooked vegetables, including cooked carrots

In the wild, dogs get their vegetables from the intestines and stomachs of the prey they have killed, as it has effectively been "cooked" inside the prey. You can replicate this by adding a little bit of cooked vegetables into their usual dog food, but not too much as to put them off it.

Is pee good for you to drink?

Under normal circumstances, drinking water is not dangerous to your health and is, indeed, beneficial to your health. However, if you drink an extremely excessive amount of water, that can harm your health or even kill you, and if the water you are drinking is contaminated with toxic pollutants or with germs, that too can be dangerous to your health.

How does a dog drink water?

Hopefully from a compassionate owner. Strays drink water from street puddles (yuk), streams or ditches (yuk), or they go thirsty.

Another perspective:

The same place my dog did: his dish, our pool-when we lived where we had one, the lake out back--after we moved, the toilet if someone forgot and left the lid up, the neighbor's sprinkler, my granddaughter's Popsicles, and just about anywhere else he could.

Understand, I loved my dog more than I ever would have guessed I could, but he was a free spirit. His wandering around to get a drink was his way of exploring and meeting the neighbors. They all loved him too.
