Dog Training

Dogs are intelligent companions that have been used to help man for centuries. Sometimes they need help to learn how to obey and assist their owners. That help is called training, and this category is for everything related to that training.

How do you keep dogs from digging?

Answer Some dogs are worse than gophers, they really like to dig especially the younger dogs, so you might try chaining him so he or she can't get close to the fence and I say chain as he could chew a rope. Other than that there's not much you can do except wait till he ages a bit and gets out of that digging part of his or her life.

How do rescue dogs get trained?

SAR dogs are trained from being only a few weeks old, and this is done by a professional.

2nd Answer:

You don't have to be a professional to train your dog to be a Certified Search & Rescue dog. You must know the way to correctly train your dog to track. You can get books on this or find a dog club that teaches tracking, etc. Training your dog to track is one of the finest things you can do as a team. You should start them out young but not always necessary.

I started out one of my male bullmastiffs at the age of 3 years. We did have help from the owner of the certified SAR Bloodhound who was then the only certified Search & Rescue dog in Siskiyou county. The bloodhound was dying from cancer and we slowly took over. So this does show you that you don't have to start out super young, it is best, but not necessary and you can do it yourself with the proper guidance & training.

Certification is now under the umbrella of the Dept. of Homeland Security with testing often done at a reasonably close U.S.A.F. base. You can Google the requirements.

How do you Litter box train puppy?

K follow these steps from the vet...

1. every time you catch him going potty in his litter box give him a treat and say "good boy!" in a high pitched tone.

2.if that does not work when he does go to the bathroom not in the litter box place him in it and don't let him come out till he goes to the bathroom.

3. also another tip is to only have one word if you would like for him to go potty in the litter box. Such as "go potty" or "bathroom" or "litter box" don't say all of them because he can't catch on .

What is the best way to break a dog that is not completely housebroken?

This is training and repetition. Lets say you have to go to work in the am. YOu walk them then, you walk them as soon as you get home, you walk them about an 1/2 hour to hour after each feeding and then you walk them before bedtime. You keep the same routine day after day. If the dog is afraid to go outside, you must associate things that make them happy inside with the outside. You dont leave food and water down for them 24 hours a day. You leave a little water when your out of the home but other than that you only put water down when you feed. Take them to a doggy park and get them to get used to smells of other dogs, that can turn on the faucet quickly. If when they finally do go, whether it one or two try to get a sample and bring it to the vet. Maybe they are constipated or have a urinary tract problem. Good Luck

Should you rub your dogs nose in there pee if they go inside the house?

No. It is a common mis conception that this will train your dog. Dogs can smell the urine but they wont be able to see it so this will not offer a very good training technique. If you are in the room when your pet pees or takes a dump you should say "no" then run them outside to show them the correct way to do it. Eventually they'll get the idea, though for some dogs it takes longer for them to catch on. Good luck!

How do you treat Bell's Palsy in dogs?

Should be the same as in humans: partial facial paralysis on one side. You might notice it in an animal by observing one side of the face drooping more than the other, particularly in the eye and mouth.

How can you train your dog to bark?

This is actually VERY VERY simple to teach a dog. Don't attempt to try and train it this before avout 6 months or it will bark ALL THE TIME. If you have a small dog you need treats and a toy but if you have a big dog usually a toy will do it. What you do is you get them all excited about playing with a toy. after about 2 minutes of waiting the dog might bark. When it barks say speak. Do this for about 30 minutes a day. No less then 15 or the dog will forget. after a week or so get rid of the toy and just tell it to speak. If it does not reply to the command, do it with a toy again for a day or so. If the dog barks when it wants attention, ignore it. It will think that if it barks when not spoken to, it will get attention. DO NOT give it what it wants or it will become very greedy. After about 2 or three weeks of doing this, your dog should bark when told. Hope it works. It worked for all my dogs

What is a safe indoor temperature for a dog?

It depends on the breed of dog and if you live in a high humidity climate or a State with lots of hot sun like Florida for example. The hottest part of the day (at least in Canada) during the summer peeks at about 5 PM. Places such as Savannah dogs should be kept indoors until evening. If your dog is an outside dog they must have shade and lots of clean water. Dog houses don't count even though they shade the dog, but retain heat. The best method is to bring your dog in at the hottest part of the day (or, if you have a small dog then have a 'doggy door' allowing your pet to come and go as they like while you are at home.) When in doubt bring your dog inside 80 degrees or more and then let them out after it starts to cool down, but always keep an eye on them. If walking bring along a collapsible doggie dish (bought at any pet store) and take a bottle of water with you. NEVER let your dog run along side your bike. Dogs dehydrate quickly like people.

Why did your dog pee on you?

it may not feel safe, it could be sick or injured or hurt, it may be scared

How can you get dogs to stay off counters?

well you can train it to not go on the counter. Have some discipline, and about the furniture, you can either declaw them or get them a toy so they can scatch on that instead of the couch. == Declawing? No, no, no... it's obscene. How's the cat supposed to defend itself, climb trees, get out of dangerous situations without it's claws?

You can stop them from clawing furniture and getting up on work surfaces using the element of surprise! Shout their name and clap your hands, shout "Get down, " or "Stop that, " and they'll often get the message really quickly!

For scratching get them a scratching post, or nail some left over carpet to a door frame - they just love to be able to stretch up and pull down on their paws to get a really good scratch!

And, if all else fails, get a water pistol! You need one where the spray carries a decent distance (but not one of those pump action ones!) and if the cat starts to misbehave, shoot it!! It doesn't do them any harm but it definitely gives them the message...

Don't try the water thing if you have a Turkish Van cat as they just love to get wet... Answer: I cleaned out my guest bathroom entirely (my only non-carpeted space) and layed their cat stuff, and also layed HUUGE cardboard scratching post (one of those that if it gets dirty with hair and all u can flip and use the otherside, then toss them) - I use this because it's quite sanitary compared to having the permanent kind, even if it's more costly. Then heavily coat the bottom part of it with catnip so they can definitely smell it but not easily get to it. I gave them plenty of "better" food - my kittens love wet food even if they're almost adult now. And made it like a paradise, only that there's NO FURNITURE and NO FUTON and NO WOODEN SURFACE to scratch on. At first, they'd cry cry cry trying to get out, scratching the door. So I sprayed Lemon/Orange/Pepper scent on the other side of the door so they hate having that under their claws. Afterawhile, they settled down, there wasn't much to do in there, they started just going into bathtub, etc (i took away the shower curtain or anything they can claw on). After 2 days or so, they start using the scratching pad 'cause that's the ONLY THING they can defeat boredom with. After they get "how to use scratching pad", I let them out. They started chewing scratching furniture. I just pick them up when I find them doing any of those, toss them back into the bathroom and lock them up for couple hours. Then let them out again. And repeat the process. After 3~4 days of that, they LEARN that they get tossed back to boredom if they do certain behaviors. And they also LEARN scratching post is TOTALLY OK to scratch on (and that it works well for their claws). It also fixed various other habits like chewing on wires and defecating elsewhere. (I just hold their nose up close to their "stuff" when i find them, then tell them, in the disapproving tone of voice, 'NO' then put them back in the bathroom.) They eventually understand and don't do ANYTHING that will earn them a trip to a separated small space. they don't even scratch the carpet. But you have to be careful and don't make your "actions" look as punishment. when they're outside, they'll run away from you thinking you're just out there to grab them back in there. So you have to make sure to pat them and give treats and do everything to make sure you still LOVE them very very much. (in my case, I play fetch w/ them, lol... and also use a stick with mouse dangling to play with them, etc.). I also hold them very often to get them look outside (mine are indoor cats with lots of curiosity on what's going on outside). They were very used to me touching them. So they eventually differentiated between my hands grabbing them for trip to bathroom or my hands giving them a pat. (they usually KNOW when they do something bad and look at you with those eyes even if you still haven't figured out what they did wrong. they look SOOOO guilty) And if you just hate this clawing stuff still, and this is too much for you, u can always get soft paws. It's expensive to get it done at pet shop but if that's what you'd rather prefer, I guess that's the only way. My husband and I just bought the soft paw product, and we work together to put them on. I usually hold the cat or something so the cat can't move or jump or something, and he clips the claws, then we put the soft paws on. Some soft paws fell out after 3 weeks, some stayed on for almost 2 months. (they fall out when they "shed" their nail shieldings - it's like snake shedding skin, cats shed their outer layer of nail). And I used 1 package for both kittens, and whole packages last quite awhile. We didn't put any on the back claws since they usually didn't do much damage on anything. We only put these on when we brought the kittens to in-law's house which is entirely covered with the wooden floor (it was new house and we didn't want them to get nervous in new place and scratch) and stayed there for couple weeks. they simulate scratching behavior when they're under stress, too. (so we thought better of it and used soft paws and not a single scratch on the nice wooden newly waxed floor!)

Why do female dogs hump things?

They do this to display their dominance over an object, whatever it be.

Answer"For they know what they do"! It's natural and even two female dogs will do the same thing. I usually grunt "no" and my dog stops. I've had two dogs and one cat all in a row and I deemed it "The Hula Parade." After laughing myself into a frenzy I gave that low grunt (as a trainer told me to do to show displeasure) and they stopped. Although funny it could be embarrassing if they did it when children or adult company was around.

When a dog (male or female) mounts anyone's leg, it usually is not sexual in nature, but dominance. Female dogs will mount female dogs, male dogs, a woman's leg, a man's leg, a small child, and even a stuffed animal. To correct this behavior, gently remove the dog from the leg, stuffed animal, whatever, and tell it NO in a firm tone. The intent is to let the dog know the behavior is inappropriate, not to scare it.

Dogs hump for dominance and control. Your dog needs to be spayed.

Dogs hump most of the time to establish dominance. Female dogs will also use the humping action to try and establish dominance over another dog

Because they, like any other animal in existence, get horny and hump anything in sight. My Mum's boyfriend as an example.

Generally this is a sign of dominance. Yes, I know, over a toy.

Because it's lesbian

Actually, your dog is masterbating. It is a natural thing for female dogs. Here is a link for you: http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/guide/mounting-masturbation-dogs

because they need a man ,and want babies

They like to.

female dogs often hump eachother in a playing way not sexually usually when their on heat.

That is a show of dominance and it should not be tolerated. Make it clear with a firm "no" from both the kid and you that it is unacceptable. All family members need to be dominant over the dog.

Dog's live in a pack, and rather than having to kill each other to express dominance, they use various other methods. From nudging, growling and nipping, to all out humping.

Humping another dog is their way of saying "You are mine, will do as I say, or else."

Mounting is not necessarily about sex when it comes to dogs. In most cases (neutered males and females) this behaviour is linked to hormonal influences still present within brain chemistry. It is very common and is within the normal range of behaviour for a male and sometimes female dog.

It can be part of play, sometimes rough play and can be an attempt to gain access to the best resource on offer (the most suitable mate, and so on).

A dog can easily be trained not to 'hump' with rewarding training methods.

On occasion it can be as a result of a urinary tract infection so it may be worth getting this checked out.

The 'dominance' approach is very outdated and there is little scientific proof to support this theory. It has been refuted even by its initial proposer, David Mech.

You should always consult a qualified and accredited dog trainer or behaviour consultant for expert help and advice. Your Vet can recommend one and your pet insurance policy should cover the cost.

The dog does it to show dominance, to show it's the boss. It can happen vice versa too.

well maybe the dog are in heat

This is how dogs show their dominance towards each other. The dog that does this is the alfa dog

She would hump the other female to show dominance. This is a dog's way of saying, "I am the dominant one here!"

to assert dominance

Why do dogs lick other dogs ears?

Dogs will bite one another for a variety of reasons. It could be aggression triggered by possessiveness over a toy, food, space, or other object of value. Aggression can also be triggered by fear, a clash of dominate personalities, or a disagreement over position in the "pack." Aggression between dogs of the same gender is common. However, biting doesn't always mean aggression. Dogs will often mouth or bite one another in play, just like kids will grab or tackle one another. As longs as the dogs aren't hurting one another, it is nothing to worry about. If they are, find out what is triggering the biting and contact a dog trainer or behaviorist.

Why do dogs bite each other's ears?

Dogs do not like to bite people ..?

Dogs only bite people for there protection , if your dog is biting you try giving him/her some space he is probably trying to tell you to leave him alone. Just give him a bit of time to himself. If not maybe he is diseased or is in come kind of pain.

Hope this helps.

How do you stop a dog fight?

Some preventative measures that can be taken to prevent a dog fight or to break on up easily is to keep the dogs leashed on if they were just introduced. If there are two dogs that are fighting, DO NOT try to get in between them. Instead, spray them with water from a hose. This will startle them enough to where they will break apart and you will have enough time to grab the dogs.

How can you make a Dalmatian mix stop biting you?

AnswerI am the proud owner of two Dalmations. They are not bossy and do not bite. They are actually the sweetest dogs in the whole world. That is one of the main characteristics of the breed. Dalmations are supposed to be exuberant, and friendly. My baby is friends with all the neighborhood kids and is the neighborhood clown. Now.... a poorly breed Dalmation sometimes won't have this characteristics because these breeders are not breeding for quality rather, they are breeding for quantity. A good breeder wants their puppies to follow as close to the breed standard as possible. Your dog who is a mix, wasn't being bred for quality. Secondly, I don't understand why people are blaming your behavioral problems on the Dalmation component of your dog. Your dog could have been bred to another breed of dog that is more like that by nature. Another reason why your dog is like that is again, you won't be seeing a quality champion Dalmation being bred to a dog of a different breed so you won't be getting quality. Now, enough with my rant! If you want to get the Dal mix to stop biting you, you may want to try Granicks bitter apple spray. Dogs absolutely hate the taste. Spray it in their mouth immediately after it snaps or bites. Your dog will then associate the biting with the bad taste of the bitter apple and it won't bite or snap at you anymore. Along with the bitter apple, give a firm NO. Again, do it immediately after or else the dog will have no clue why you are disciplining it. Don't stay mad at the dog after you discipline it won't do any good. I hope that helps and I hope that clears up the bad info you got about the Dal breed! I have had them for 10 years!!!!! I know!!!! Good luck. Anonymous

Most dogs are not aggressive by nature but rather it is learned through poor handling resulting in dominance aggression. Try feeding the dog by hand. The dog will learn that since the food comes from you that you are alpha. Also make sure the dog is not allowed on furniture, the higher up a dog sits the more more status he has in his mind. And don't allow the dog to push you around physically or otherwise. Dogs are very smart and if they learn that they can control you they will take charge, resulting in dominant dog.

Why dont dogs talk?

Because they don't have the mental ability to do so...

They can't talk because they do not have the right vocal cords. Parrots, on the other hand are lucky enough to be able to communicate through speech. Dogs unfortunately do not have aposable thumbs like primates or vocal cords that produce speech. They do understand commands, why not say something when we ask? Parrots are not just mimicers. They comprehend many basic things. They have the learning capability of a 5 year old child.

Why would an old dog urinate in the beds?

There are a variety of reasons a dog may start urinating more frequently. In intact male dogs, there could be prostate hyperplasia or prostate cancer. In female dogs, urinary tract infections are not uncommon. Diabetes is a relatively common problem in dogs, particularly dogs that are overweight. Other causes may include behavioral changes (such as anxiety or stress), kidney failure, bladder cancer or urinary stones.

As there are numerous potential causes, some of which are serious medical conditions requiring treatment, you should take your dog to a veterinarian for an examination.

How do you teach your dog to backflip?

The best way to teach a dog to flip is to isolate each movement and use treats to teach the dog each one. The first part of the trick is to get the dog up, then to jump on your leg to launch up and finally teach the actual flip. Take your time and use plenty of positive reinforcement and treats.

How do you poty train your dog?

Two good ways to do it. One if he starts going to the bathroom on your rug first off get him out then when comes back scold him and put his nose up to it or otherwise he won't know what he did wrong. Second way there are matts you can buy at petco that have a scent on them that will make him wanna go there so either make a litter box in your basement or put it outside they are cheap so don't worry.
