This answer depends on the environment. If, for example, you are talking about in a kitchen in a maintained household, the water will be good for probably a few days. After that point, there will be so much dust in the cup that you'd probably just want to get a new glass of water. But out in the woods, a cup of water would probably last a few hours unattended. Insects and such will get into the water and may possibly contaminate it. In a snowy or very cold environment, you could probably leave it out for a day, since most insects won't be about.

It would taste flat and be less pleasant than conventional tap water, but you would not become ill from it.

In order to kill the bactaria in the water, you have to boil the water on the stove until the water is boilig. Let the water cool, and then it will be safe to drink. There are also water bottles with filters that can filter water, as well as using a Brita pitcher. You can also get water bottles that use UV light to kill the bacteria in the water.

If you drink too much, you could get sick, but if you only have a sip you might just feel nasty for a while.
