The argument for this is not health reasons, but that elder people have on several occasions died in traffic because they misunderstand the traffic rules.

Should you decide to do it yourself follow these steps:

1. Get a medical certification from an authorized GP (General Practitioner) that you are capable for driving (costs around 6550 Ft)

2. Go to your area's Governmental Document Office (Okvany Iroda or something similar) incharge of issuing all documents (IDs, Passports, DLs, License plates, etc)

3. Have your current US DL and Hungarian Address Card (Lakcimet Igazolo) ready…they may also require your passport with a residence permit.

4. Draw the number (depending on the office it will be labeled with something resembling "vezetői engedély" and of course wait your turn.

5. Once in, you will submit your medical certification, current US DL, Address Card, you will also have to pay two checks (4000 + 2200 Forints ~ total of 30-35 US$ depending on exchange rate)...no worries, they will fill out the checks for you and you can pay it right there in the office (there's a Postal counter for exactly those purposes)

6. They may require you to write a statement on a blank paper that you had a registered residence where you obtained your current DL.

7. Taking a picture, giving your signatures, getting a temporary permit (two A4 pages) and your current DL back and return in about two (2) weeks to swap your DL for a new Hungarian DL.

Note: This pretty much applies to all nationalities….and YES, You will HAVE to give up on your native DL in exchange for a Hungarian! (Hungarian DL is a common EU format and as such is valid in any EU/EEC country with no need for international DL)….advice: Bring someone who speaks Hungarian with you….makes life lot easier J

When do you need an international drivers license?

always

No, it depends on where you are licensed, and where you are going.

First off, let's clarify the "International driver's license" (more accurately, international driving permit [IDP]). It does not

allow you to drive a car anywhere in the world, all by itself. It is only a translation of your regular drivers license into multiple languages, and it's no good without your legally-issued drivers license. It is not valid in your home country.

The main reason for it is so that police in Japan or Saudi Arabia who can't read English will be able to see what your drivers license says.

It is valid in all countries that signed the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. Other countries that did not sign the agreement (such as Mexico) still honor the IDP. Some (like Brazil and China) don't recognize it at all.

If you come from an English-speaking country, your regular driving license will be OK in other English-speaking countries such as Canada, the USA, Great Britain, Australia or New Zealand. Most of Europe will also accept a North American driving license.
