You will need a bachelor's degree and certification as an elementary teacher (typically the university will have you enroll in a certification program as part of your degree). Requirements for regular licenses to teach kindergarten through grade 12 vary by State. However, all States require a bachelor's degree from an approved teacher training program with a prescribed number of subject and education credits, as well as supervised practice teaching, in addition to the professional testing for the license.

All 50 States and the District of Columbia require public school teachers to be licensed. Licensure is not required for teachers in private schools in most States. This is granted by the State Board of Education.

Almost all States require applicants for a teacher's license to be tested for competency in basic skills, such as reading and writing, and in teaching. Most States require continuing education for renewal of the teacher's license. Many States have reciprocity agreements for licensing, but not all.

Alternative licensure programs are available for teachers who have a bachelor's degree in the subject they will teach, but who lack the necessary education courses required for a regular license. Many of these alternative licensure programs are designed to ease shortages of teachers of certain subjects, such as mathematics and science. Teachers who need to be licensed may enter programs that grant a master's degree in education, as well as a license.

Private schools are generally exempt from meeting State licensing standards. Private schools associated with religious institutions also desire candidates who share the values that are important to the institution.

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education currently accredits teacher education programs across the United States.

In addition to being knowledgeable in their subject, teachers must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand the students' educational and emotional needs.

With additional preparation, teachers may move into positions as school librarians, reading specialists, instructional coordinators, or guidance counselors. Teachers may become administrators or supervisors, although the number of these positions is limited and competition can be intense.

Nigeria Union of Teachers is a major trade union in Nigeria. It was formed to create a united front for practitioners of the teaching profession in the country. A major objective of the union covers the improvement in economic conditions of teachers, an avenue for bringing forth ideas about the educational development of the country from the perspectives of teachers and general economic security for teachers in the country.

History

The union was formally inaugurated in 1931, it came about partly as a result of vulnerabilities exposed by the great depression, which led to cuts in teachers' salaries and a seemingly lack job security.

The use of irregular and unpredictable educational codes for teachers and salary cuts led to an increase in teachers associations mushrooming in various southern Nigerian cities, particularly in Calabar, Lagos, and Abeokuta. The various associations, however, realized that harmonizing the objectives of the groups to bring about a united front will create a powerful vocal union for the interest of the teachers. On July 8, 1931, the teachers associations of Lagos, Agege, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Calabar and Ijebu-Ode joined together to form the Nigeria Union of Teachers. The first president of the group and chairman of the July 1931 meeting was the late Oladotun Ransome Kuti, the husband of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and father of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. On May 27, 1972, the union merged with the Northern State Teachers Union, an association founded by Aminu Kano and a few northern Nigerian teachers in 1948.

Unfortunately, although there are a wide variety of teachers ranging from the very good to the very bad, there is usually not much that can be done to "get rid" of them if you are having problems with them.

If you are having difficulties getting along with the teacher, the best approach may be to try to amend that relationship. Don't confuse a teacher being strict or diligent with being a bad teacher. If the trouble you run into is with the school work and not the teacher him/herself, then getting rid of them won't solve your problem.

If you truly have a bad teacher and find they are hindering your ability to learn, then there may be steps you can take.

1. If you are in a grade school, talk to your parents about it. They have authority with the school that you probably do not yet have. You may also want to talk to the principle or the student councillor if you have one.
2. If you are in a high school or post-secondary, you may be able to switch courses, ending up with a different teacher. This would depend on your doing so early in the year. You also have the aforementioned option of speaking to other authorities in the school.
3. If you are in a post-secondary school, you can file a complaint with the school directly. The school will probably provide an ombudsman to help settle the situation.

It should take an additional four years to obtain your Bachelor's degree. Your state may require a test to become a teacher.

• About the test: Back in the 1980's requirements for teachers changed and it was required that everyone who desired to teach take and pass a standardized test called the NTE. As far as I know, the requirement has not changed since then.
