Why is a building called building if its already built?
Lighter side: Further back in history, what we now call "buildings" were indeed called "builts". Builders were satisfied with this title and thought it only made sense until they realized it was causing too much confusion amongst civilians. For example, when people called their parents about their trips to New York, the puzzlement was endless.
"Hey, mom. It's me. I can't believe I'm actually glancing at the Empire State Built."
"The Empire State Built what?"
"The Empire State Built..."
"Built what? Built house? Built bridge?"
"No, the Built!"
"Built what!?"
After dealing with years of families breaking up because of simple misunderstandings, the term for "builts" was finally officially changed to "buildings" instead. As it turned out, the word buildings left people less inclined to asking about the buildings themselves since they thought by it not yet being finished and still in the "building" process, whoever they asked might not have a clue to what was being built.

Why did people in New York City build skyscrapers?
The buildings are tall in New York City because New York is a dense, or highly populated area. Think of it this way: If all the buildings in New York were short, not as many people could live and work there.
In addition, there are two reasons why Manhattan island has so many skyscrapers. Land is so expensive, it pays to buy a smaller piece of property and put up a really tall building.. And the critical point is that skyscrapers must have their foundations in solid rock, and that's just what Manhattan island is made of.

Can a penny kill if dropped from Empire State Building?
No, a penny falling from the Empire State Building cannot kill a pedestrian. It is unlikely to even penetrate the skin of a pedestrian.
When an object falls to earth it gains speed. It eventually gains so much speed that it doesn't accelerate anymore, this is called Terminal Velocity.
If a human were to jump off a plane he would accelerate to his terminal velocity. If you take the mass of an average grown human, his terminal velocity would be about 100 something miles per hour. But the mass of a penny is only about 1 gram, so its terminal velocity would only be about 56mph. That means that the penny would accelerate to this speed and then it won't accelerate any more and it will maintain this current speed.
You also have to take into consideration that on a building as high as the empire state building wind rushes up the sides so your measly little penny would simply be blown away.
In the slim chance that it would hit a pedestrian, it would more than likely sting but he would be able to walk away and live another day. It is unlikely that the penny would even penetrate the skin of the human.
Even though the urban legend might not be true, it's really not recommended that you try it out yourself. The Empire State Building authorities have always insisted that nobody has ever dropped such an item from the top of the building, although this cannot be confirmed.
Usually the city regulates things like this, but in general, yes, the county can prevent you from building a certain structure in a certain area.

What would happen if you dropped a marble off the Empire State Building?
It would fall to the ground, going faster all the time, accelerating at the rate of
the acceleration of gravity ... or maybe a little less than that because of the air
resistance ... and by the time it hit the ground, it would be falling pretty fast.
If the point happened to be pointing down when it landed, it might actually
penetrate some distance into the ground. Also, if anyone happened to be
standing or walking over the place the knife was headed for, it would hurt,
whether it was falling with the point up or down.
What is the most ancient building in the world?
I have visited a couple of contenders for this prize:
1. Santa Sophia in Istanbul which has been church, mosque and museum since it was completed in 537 AD.
2. The Pantheon in Rome which was built as a temple by Hadrian in 117 AD, if I remember correctly, and is also now a museum.
I would be very interested to hear of other old buildings which have been in continuous use for over 1500 years.
Additional commentsPer Wikipedia, as of 2009, the Pantheon is still in use as a church. (But Santa Sophia is a museum). The Catholic church Santa Sabina in Rome, built in 422 CE (AD), is substantially the original structure and is still in use. There are some other churches originally built in the 4th century CE still in use, but these churches have been substantially reworked, and I am not sure how much of the original buildings survive. In addition, the Mausoleum of Hadrian, completed in 139 CE, and converted to a fortress around 400 CE, is still in use as a museum.
