What was life like for a medieval woman?

One Opinion:

Not good. She had no rights in the society and couldn't own land, have money, or control her life. Even noble women were without much power. A few did gain it, but that was very few. She was expected to help her husband do his business or with his crops, take care of the children, take care of the house, make the food, churn the butter, make the candles, and do what else was needed to keep alive. Women and children were often abused, killed, and abandoned.

A Different Opinion:

Much of the popular understanding of the Middle Ages is unfortunately mythology. If you want to know what they were really like, it is usually necessary to do some research to get beyond that. What you find when you do this, is not much like what one might expect.

There were many differences among countries, and a great deal of variation over the thousand years the Middle Ages lasted, but we can make some observations of things usually true in most times and places:

  • Medieval women had rights. This was true in all places I have seen documented in history.
  • Women who were abused had legal recourse.
  • In most countries, medieval women could own land and other property.
  • Medieval women included some of the most powerful people in Europe.

Some medieval women had important jobs in positions as varied as architecture, medicine, entertainment, government, and the military. It seems unfortunate that instead of being held up as role models and examples of what women can achieve, they are neglected in favor of emotionally evocative, but inaccurate, descriptions of how horrible things were.

Rather than give examples here, I will direct readers to related questions found at links below. These related questions have links to a number of examples and sources.

Is the y in Tuesday a vowel or consonant?

The letter Y can be regarded as both a vowel and a consonant. In terms of sound, a vowel is 'a speech sound which is produced by comparatively open configuration of the vocal tract, with vibration of the vocal cords but without audible friction...', while a consonant is 'a basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed'. The letter Y can be used to represent different sounds in different words, and can therefore fit either definition. In myth or hymn it's clearly a vowel, and also in words such asmy, where it stands for a diphthong (a combination of two vowel sounds). On the other hand, in a word like beyond there is an obstacle to the breath which can be heard between two vowels, and the same sound begins words like young and yes. (This consonant sound, like that of the letter W, is sometimes called a 'semivowel' because it is made in a similar way to a vowel, but functions in contrast to vowels when used in words.) Whether the letter Y is a vowel or a consonant is therefore rather an arbitrary decision. The letter is probably more often used as a vowel, but in this role it's often interchangeable with the letter I. However, the consonant sound is not consistently represented in English spelling by any other letter, and perhaps for this reason Y tends traditionally to be counted among the consonants.

What are alphabet lines?

The "Alphabet of Lines" refers to the different styles of lines used in drafting such as to show different features about an object that is drawn: hidden. construction, cutting-plane, visible (object), dimension, extention, phantom, center, section, and border.

AnswerIn Drafting, or Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) -- the alphabet of lines are the different lines that draftsmen, architects, engineers, et al use when constructing a drawing.

For example, a thick solid line is called an object line and represents the outline of a part on a drawing. A dash line represents an edge that is not visible in a particular view, hence it is called a hidden line.

Other common lines used in drafting include dimension lines, extension lines, construction lines, border lines, center lines, among many others depending on the type of drawing.
