There are many answers, but I'll just give you a few:
The approach psychologists use to acquire information about behavior in a systematic fashion is called scientific method. The scientific method involves forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. It helps ensure that psychological research is conducted in a rigorous and systematic manner.
It's interesting that you've asked/been asked simply about the importance of fashion because if you really strip it down the answer is very plainly obvious... It is totally unimportant in almost every respect. Nobody has any true need for many articles of clothing designed to be fashionable unless you count vanity and aesthetics as a reason. Until very recently in human history the function of clothing was not to look good but was to protect you, keep you warm and make living easier. In my opinion the fashion industry is a vapid, vacuous and a genuine waste of time that serves only to place an observable barrier between various echelons of society, a barrier that we should have grown beyond by now.
As I don't mean to be unhelpful prehaps that is the aspect of the question you could focus on, how has fashion become so instrumental in defining the barrier between classes and how what may be seen as fashionable for one social group may be seen as unfashionable to another. Prehaps you could mention the differences between the clothing of nobles and peasantry in throughout history (e.g. Royalty and their subjects during the renaissance) or how native tribes in both our ancient history and present day have specific traditional tribal dress that denote an individuals importance in the tribe. Essentially, try to explore the psychological/sociological link between fashion and social status.
Hope this helps!
P.S. People who bang on and on about how they "make their own style" and "just wear whatever they feel like" are still most likely slaves to a trend and don't have the wherewithal to realise it. If a person dresses in a way that they consciously or subconsciously believe will invoke an emotional response in others be that admiration, approval or even distaste then they are just as much a part of the ideal of fashion as someone who boldly shows off designer merchandise. You can observe this very easily in that people who would openly seen to snub fashion will often dress in a way similar to friends and vice versa. The least fashionable way for a person to dress would be to dress totally practically for whatever they were planning to do and wear only things that would aid them. However (especially in modern society) even practical clothing is linked to the ideology of fashion.
What is a fashion psychologist?
I am working for over 2 years as Style and Fashion Psychologist so have a quite good idea of what it is:)
Psychology offers understanding of our behaviours and thoughts in various areas of our lives, including fashion. As Fashion Psychologist I work with individuals, companies and PR and media sharing that knowledge.
With individuals it's all about how the clothes affect their emotioneal states, their cognitive abilities, their confidence as well as how fashion is a tool to creating the best possible image of yourself which will allow you to be successful in every area of your life.
With companies it's all about showing them how employees are the representation of the company hence they need to dress in a way congruent with company's image. But it's also to do with the way their dress affect their cognitive abilities and well-being hence the productivity.
With PR and media I act as an expert on campaigns, help shape campaigns from psychological angle, write articles, comment on various issues etc.
The applications of psychology in fashion industry are really varied.

Yes appearances is always deceptive especially when it comes to a relationship. We always think that people who are a quite type, or even shy can fool a lot of people. Not all people who are quite or shy will be that. And this will be the look that they want others to see from them. Appearances is very important but if we always believe that when a person is quite, it doesn't mean that he is always quite to everyone else. From my past experience the man that I married told me that he is a quite type man, but I found out that his only quite with me not to everyone. His appearances kind a fooled me but then again I never let it bothered me anymore because I am his wife.
So over all do not let appearances of a person fool you, there's a lot more that you must know when it comes to appearances.
