If at 8 weeks it's possible that your really aren't 8 weeks yet and the heart beat isn't showing up... at 12 weeks.. if there is no heart beat there is a HUGE problem. I wouldn't worry if they're trying with the Doppler on the outside but if it's on the ultrasound... no heartbeat means no baby, at 12 weeks.

You won't feel a heartbeat even when the baby is ready to be born, even with twins. It would be a good idea to take precautions so that you don't get pregnant in the future if you are not ready for that.

Nope. If you are feeling fluttering it is just nerves or gas. It sounds like you are worried about it, use a condom or Birthcontrol, if you are worried about it and not properly ready for it.

It's not uncommon for one twin to be larger than the other twin in utero. The most likely cause of this is just that one twin is consuming more of the food and nutrition that the mother passes down to the babies. You could have one little piggy who's eating the other one's food. Since he is getting more food and nutrition that the other, he will be slightly larger, or heavier. There is not much concern over this as long as you are consuming enough food to feed them both. If the smaller one doesn't want all of his meal, then the larger one will take it.

Another cause could be the position of the babies. One baby may have more room to grow while the other one might be a little constricted. Again, nothing major to be concerned.

While it is common that one twin is smaller in development than the other, your doctor will still want to keep a check up on both of them to make sure the smaller one does grow at its own rate; and that the larger one doesn't get too large before delivery.

That depends how far along the person is. We measure to the top of the uterus (the "fundus") at each visit to check for normal growth of the baby. For most women, the top of the uterus reaches the umbilicus (belly button) by about 20 weeks of pregnancy. It then goes approximately one centimeter higher per week until the end of pregnancy (about 40 weeks). Hope that helps! Dr. B.

Based on current techonology there is no way to determine sex of the fetus by ultrasound by the 7th week of gestation. Male and Female fetuses are anatomically identical until around 13 weeks. You could however determine the gender by an amniocentisis. However most providors will not do an amnio for the sheer fact of determining gender, as it carries a risk of infection as well as miscarriage. At 11-13 weeks, if you obtain a profile picture showing the fetus's "Genital Nub" there have been advances in determining gender based on the the degree of angulation of the "nub" from the spine. This however is not an exact science. Standardly gender is determined from week 16-24 if the baby is cooperative.

The babies heart beat develops at the fifth week of pregnancy. By the 12th week of pregnancy, you may be able to hear the babies heart beat. This can vary by days or even by a week or so, as well as how "high-tech" the device is. So don't be alarmed if you dont hear it on the first day of week 12!
