Each kind of media has several formats associated with it, each format with its own properties and extension. The various formats are optimized for the kind of data they store as well as the media on which they are created and stored. Popular multimedia formats are .mp3 (MPEG-Layer 3) for music files, .avi (Audio Video Interface) for videos, and .jpg (JPEG) for images."

What is the meaning of jpg?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's a file extension for graphic files with the certain method of compression. Usually jpg files take less disk space then, for instance, tiff files. The extension JPG refers to JPEG files. The E is omitted to fit it into the (deprecated) 8.3 file name notation.

JPEG" stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the image standard. The group was organized in 1986, issuing a standard in 1992, which was approved in 1994 as ISO 10918-1. JPEG is distinct from MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), which produces compression schemes for video.

The JPEG file format is a compressed format, with some loss of quality during compression. It is a popular web format due to the generally smaller size of files compared to other formats. File extensions are .jpg, .jpeg, and .jpe.

What is the best file format and codec for audio?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Apple Lossless Format I believe. I think any Lossless format is best for soundquality, as it compresses much less of the original version

Answer^

If anything rip 360 bit rate .MP3 file format. Works with all MP3 players, phones and sounds fairly good. One draw back is file size, however, with Storage space getting cheaper and cheaper no one should worry about file size. Go for quality, your ears will appreciate it.
360 MP3 does not exist. The highest bit rate it can go is 320. Since MP3 is lossy (and the technology dates back to 1980s) it is not a quality sound file.

While 320 MP3 is a decent audio format for a portable player, it is lossy, ergo it is not the best sound quality. Apple Lossless is obviously lossless but the greatest audio format is FLAC, 'free lossless audio codec.' I have OK Computer by Radiohead playing at bit rates of greater than 3000!

^ the best is .wav / 32 bit float / 48.000 khz, whick reaches up to 6144 kbps!!

^FLAC is the best audio format for performance and quality. FLAC is lossless so it will always be as good as the source material. A higher bitrate in mp3 format was either unnecessary or would have been the same if encoded in FLAC.

i would have to disagree with all of you i have tested flac. ogg. wmv ect and i think .ape is better especially over .flac

i still think .ogg is better than .mp3 though!!

^i disagree
.wav is the best audio format. it is a lossless compression which does not lower the quality of the audio like .mp3 might do with very soft or very loud sounds.
.wav is also the format many labels use, so more softwares are available out there to edit and play .wav audio files

the first part i got from my college textbook about audio editing, "a multimedia approach" by Guzdial

Most all of these answers are good, but it depends what you're looking for. All of these formats can have completely different outcomes depending on your Hardware / Software. Audio files such as WAV, FLAC, and AIFF are all very good, but It's capabilities are specified in it's usage. Running Logic Pro on a Mac is completely different than using Ableton or FL on a PC. If you are looking for the HIGHEST POSSIBLE QUALITY ACHIEVABLE, then you might want to look into some of the Application specific files. I guess what I'm saying is, is find what fits your tastes. If you're producing, you can get just about as crazy with things with files size for crystal clear sound as you want, but if you're listening to mainstream audio, I'd go for something very compatible such as the WAV Format.

Which has a larger file format JPEG file or tiff file?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

These are different file formats. jpeg uses a lossy compression algorithm. Tiff can use a lossless algorithm (the compression algorithithm can be defined for each image).
TIFF is a flexible, adaptable file format for handling images and data within a single file, by including the header tags (size, definition, image-data arrangement, applied image compression) defining the image's geometry. For example, a TIFF file can be a container holding compressed (lossy) JPEG and (lossless) PackBits compressed images. A TIFF file also can include a vector-based Clipping path (outlines, croppings, image frames). The ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality. This is not the case when using the TIFF as a container holding compressed JPEG. Other TIFF options are layers and pages, neither are supported by JPEG.

How do you shrink a jpg?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is simple to shrink or resize a photo for a web page. I'm using here Photoshop first to shrink a photo.

This is my process in Ps.

1.To change image size, enter values for Width and Height. ...

2. To change the Resolution, enter a new value.

3. To change the image size or resolution while allowing the total number of pixels to adjust proportionately, make sure that you select Resample.

Besides this method, sometimes I used to take some online tools to achieve my goal.

Such as ResizeYourImage ,TinyPNG, PicResize, ResizeImage and so many.

What does the file extension jpg stand for?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The file extension JPG stands as a Picture Extension that means:

Both JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and JPG (Joint Photographic Group) are bitmap compression formats for picture and image files with compression ratios ranging from 10:1 to 20:1. In fact, JPG and JPEF file formats are identical. Older DOS-based computers were designed to handle a maximum "3-character file extension" which is why JPG was attributed to compressed image files. Newer Operating systems such as Windows XP and Vista allow for longer file extensions as evidenced by ".html". XP and Vista will also support the older JPG file extension.

How do you convert a number of jpg files to JPEG files all at once?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is basically no difference between jpg and jpeg. They mean the same thing, and are exactly the same type of file. It's just a different name (extension) for the same thing.

However if you want to convert these type of images in bulk, ImageBadger Image Converter will help and save your time.
