It has to do with who will be using your files and what versions of the software they have. Virtually all major software packages, including Microsoft Office, are backward-compatible, which means that you can work with files that were saved in older versions of the software. However, you often cannot open files saved in newer software versions if you are using an older version. For example, in Excel 2007, in addition to the normal Save function, you also have the option of saving your workbook as an Excel 97-2003 file. Both the normal save and the 97-2003 save have their drawbacks. If you save your file normally, you are limiting the range of your audience, because people using older versions of Excel won't be able to open it. If you save it as a 97-2003 version, you are limiting what functions you can use to make the file look and behave the way you want. Obviously, every new software version has more "bells and whistles" than the previous version. By saving as a 97-2003 version, you are limiting yourself to only the functions that were available in those older software versions. When using a newer Excel version and saving your workbook as an older format, the Compatibility Checker will let you know what characteristics of your workbook, if any, are not compatible with the version in which you are trying to save it. Of course, if your file is only for your personal use, you need not concern yourself with the 97-2003 save option. BTW, you can tell which Excel files are compatible with Excel 97 etc. by the file extension. Files saved in newer Excel versions and that are not compatible with the older versions have four-letter extensions instead of three-letter. For example, for regular Excel files (not templates, no macros, etc.), older versions have the extension .xls, and newer versions have the extension .xlsx.

You cannot open a file in YIFY format. There is no such format. Valid formats for files are ASCII and binary. Both of these types of files can be opened but would not be useful to the average user in their native format.

make what you want in photoshop with transparent pixels then save it as BMP, Save AS- choose BMP from Format: drop down list, choose Windows and number in Depth, if you are on windows (I guess) in new window that opens.

You have already listed the most common formats. The only other common format I know of is PNG. Some other less common formats are: TIF, TIFF, JFIF (Jpeg), RIF, PPM, PGM, PBM, PNM, BPG, CD5, IFF, ECW, IMG, PAM, PCX, PGF*, SGI, SID, TGA (obsolete), CPT, PSD, PSP, XCF, and CGM. There are other rare formats, as well.

I suppose there is also ICO, which is used for icons.

I don't know of an official printer file format. However, if you print to file, the data stream is saved as the .xps format. Perhaps this is what you are looking for.

After you download the .mp3 file you can attempt to change its file extension by renaming it. Right click the file, select rename, and at the end change it to a .mp4. This does work for some files but not all so always keep a backup of the original file in case of any damage.

This is going to depend on the type of file that you are trying to open. The file extension is created depending on the software (and version) that was used. For example, if you use an older version of Microsoft Word to save a document, it has a .doc extension. If you use a newer version such as 2007, it will save the files with a .docx extension. You would need to have the correct software to open the file, but in many cases, Microsoft may make a viewer that you can download (depending on the file of course)

PSD is best file format to store images but other formats listed are also best for their purpose: TIFF to save high res continuous tone images (photographs) for print, JPEG to save photographs for web or screen viewing, GIF to save graphics up to 256 colors for web, PNG to save photographs and other images with transparent areas and more than 256 colors for web.

jpg and jpeg are both the same thing. They both mean: Joint Photographic Experts Group

Right click the jpg file and click "Send To", next click "Compressed Zip Folder", then select the save location.

Adobe illustrator (AI) is a vector file format to save vector illustrations. It is the default format for Adobe illustrator. Photoshop cannot save the images in to AI format but it can be opened in Photoshop.
