Do cockroachs bite?

YES they do, but cockroaches normally only go after the immobile (i.e. something sleeping or dead) and they are omnivores. It is quite common for them to nibble on the sores of an animal while it's sleeping. While cockroaches do not transmit diseases directly through a bite, as mosquitos do, the germs that they've been exposed to may cause infection or worse. Washing up the bitten area is normally all you need to do since cockroach bites rarely break the skin of a human, except in the case of small children and infants.

When making a sling where is the knot tied on the trangular bandage to create a pocket for the elbow?

Depends. In the Sling and Swathe you use two bandages. You tie them together at the short side and place the knot at the elbow. One bandage will wrap around the neck and be tied behind the neck to support the arm from being lowered. The "swathe" will be tied around the persons chest, catching the arm and being tied under the opposite arm pit (if your splinting the right arm, you would tie it under the left arm pit). The Swathe prevents the patient from moving the arm out from the body.

A sling only is tied behind the neck. Make sure you always pad the area behind any not.

There are numerous ways to do this. This is how I do it in the field. There is no wrong way providing the arm is immobilized and there is no further harm to patient. This is a skill that is hard to describe in writting and you really need to practice it. One of these days I will post a video on you tube as to how I do it.

Does a health care provider CPR course cover First Aid or is that a separate certification?

As far as current Canadian Red Cross training goes, the CPR for HCP does not cover first aid.

It does cover topics such as shock & deadly bleeding, stroke, angina & heart attack (as well as CPR, AED, choking) but is not considered enough to be a first aid course.

Typically the first aid course covers more. See the related link for a breakdown of the various courses or check your local training provider.

What does k-y stand for in KY jelly?

The initials K-Y are not known to represent any words, they were described by their originator as 'arbitrary letters', but have been retained for their brand identity.

I think the initials K-Y should at least stand for 'Knob You'

- ok so I think I figured this one out today in physics class. There is a constant coefficient of how much something "stretches" such as a spring and as you can guess it is represented by the letters "KY" so KY warming jelly literally means "stretching warming jelly" not the best visual but when you think about the main objective of most personal lubricants it makes some sense.

Reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus occurs because of?

When you do ventilations during CPR some of the air that you're blowing in not only goes into the trachea and lungs but into the esophagus and stomach. What is second degree sunburn?

I would consider a second degree sunburn where you are very red to the point you an not comfortably touch the skin at all, or if you have any blisters.

sometimes in cases of bad sunburn you can get "sun sick" as i have heard it called. Chills, nausea, light headed and very tired. This is likely due to the trauma of being burnt and getting dehydrated and simply being too hot.

If you feel at all lightheaded or sick to your stomach , get into air conditioning right away! Drink some water or Gatorade to get your electrolytes back if you do not feel better right away you may have heat exhaustion and need medial help .Take care of your burn by applying aloe with lidocaine (name brand, Solarcaine) to help with the pain, and taking a pain reliever to help with the inflammation and discomfort .I would take a cool oatmeal/milk bath to soothe the skin and help with the upcoming itching. If you have blisters DO NOT POP them this will make it worse, they will either go down on their own or pop on their own, leave them be. you can get a serious infection if you pop them.

What pill can you take if you are dehydrated?

If you're dehydrated, pills will not work. Rehydrate with water.

This can result from exposure to high temperatures, irritants, chemical vapors, smoke, etc. The primary concern for a first resopnder in this situation is to maintain the airway. Note also with chemical burns that you'll need to take the proper steps to avoid injury yourself.

Do they recommend salt tablets for dehydration?

No. Salt tablets are extremely difficult to calculate for the correct amount. It is much better to stabilize sodium loss of the body through food or sodium containing sports drink. Too much sodium via excessive salt intake through a miscalculation in the amount of salt tablet taken could actually exacerbate the dehydration problem.

You need to talk to a doctor, I was told I need them as I am not sodium Sensitive as is 75% of Americans it will not affect me negatively but few years back my heart nearly stopped beating due to heat stroke brought on by Salt free diet I tried. By that I mean just the normal thing No table Salt, Low salt beacon ect... I Was told by the Doctor that no salt Diet had nearly killed me, as in they were charging a Defibrillator. See a Doctor before Playing one. I was told I need a very large amount salt in my diet but only if I like to stay alive. For me there in a practical sense is simply no unsafe amount but for anther 2 Salt tablets might make you very ill. But if you feel cramps when its hot out Talk to a doctor and see whats right amount for you. DRA advisory are less than useless in regards to Salt and Potassium intake are to varied by lot factors including were you were born and the weather of your childhood more so than race. Its simply to varied by individual need so talk to a Doctor before using a salt supplement or as I stupidly did Changing your Diet to Salt free.
