I don't know exactly how it works, but it draws the heat from the burn. Vinegar can be applied with a soft cloth, or add two cups to a warm bath and soak for 15 minutes. Either way, you will instantly feel better. Repeat every 4 hours for a bad burn, but usually after the first time, you feel improvement immediately. I also suggest using aloe vera after the first two applications of vinegar. The aloe keeps the skin mosturized and keeps skin from peeling so you won't lose the tan you suffered for!

If you still suffer after vinegar, it may sound crazy, but lay down on cool concrete (perhaps a basement floor or carport.) The cool concrete draws the heat out, but it is only a temporary solution. Vinegar is the best way to go!

You should always get any swelling checked out by a doctor before doing anything in case it is something serious. If they decide it isn't, a compression wrap like Tubigrip can certainly help reduce swelling. You want to use a double layer running from the top of your thigh to your ankle to be most effective. Beware though, you mustn't wear it at night. Tubigrip is best used in conjunction with Ice and elevation to reduce swelling.

Maggots within a wound are typically not a major danger (and in fact sometimes a good thing, as they seem to confine themselves to consuming only necrotic tissue). This gives you time to assess the situation and choose an effective, safe approach.

Ideally, flushing maggots from the wound with sterile saline works very well. Sterile saline is pretty harmless stuff and is used to remove pretty much any foreign material from open wounds. Alternately, in the case of a very small number of individuals, you can also remove maggots from a wound with tweezers.

You most definitely don't want to use toxins to kill them. First, as you're dealing with an open wound, the toxins you use will find easy access to the patient's system. Secondly, maggots can decompose when dead, thus introducing a bacterial threat.

Note also that maggots are sometimes used clinically, especially in cases where super-sensitive debridement of necrotic tissued, especially from burns, is desirable. In this case, the maggots in question are sterilzed (both in the antiseptic and reproductive sense).

Old school paramedics will also tell you that discovering maggots in the bandaged wounds of transients and people that cannot perform good wound care, is a good sign, usually meaning that the wound will be clean and uninfected.

There are two main concerns when using oxygen on new born babies. One is oxygen toxicity, the other is meeting the babies oxygen requirements.

On one hand, oxygen can actually be toxic, especially to pre-term babies from 32 weeks gestation and lower. High FiO2's(fraction of inspired oxygen) may even cause blindness (ROP), and Intracerebral bleeds (ICH). Secondly, the baby must have sufficient O2 to meets its bodies demands.

I told you this so you know there is a difference in term newborn, and pre-term, oxygenation requirements. So, the simple answer to a complicated scenario is, apply the minimum FiO2 that will address the babies requirements. This is called oxygen titration.

Just one? No. While it's possible that you have an allergic reaction that could be serious, there isn't a lot of mass to a daddy longlegs, and it's not a common allergy. So, unless that hihgly unlikley allergy shows up, you're safe. Just don't do it too much! :}

If food or liquid passes through trachea instead of passing through food tube or esophagus, choking occurs. Ask the person whether he chokes or not, if he answers that allow him to cough and get his wind pipe cleared. If he nods/gestures for your question, then you need to try Heimlich maneuver, a life saving technique otherwise the person will become unconscious and death may occur.

If the ankle is twisted then you should apply a cold pack or ice to the ankle. And an important thing to remember is if you twist your ankle whilst wearing boots with ankle support, you should try and leave the boot on as it will be containing the swelling; and taking it off could cause further swelling.

Not sure where this question comes from, but you don't administer chest compressions to a patient who has a pulse. Period. This is regardless of state of consciousness. With a choking victim who can make no noise, don't start rescue breathing them if you KNOW it's choking -- go straight into Heimlich Manuver (which can include abdominal thrust). If they can't breathe, you can't breathe them usually. FIRST clear the obstruction. Note that, if the victim is choking due to an obstruction, you won't be able to get air into them, and that would be why the chest did not rise. If you aren't giving them air, rescue breathing is not working. Move on to another strategy right smartly. -------- the American heart ass. states in an unconsciousness adult that is unable o be ventilated (despite 2 attempts to reposition the airway) begin chest comprestions to force out the obstruction. as to why.... got me --------- If you aren't getting air into the victim, the heartbeat doesn't matter -- there's no oxygen in the bloodstream to circulate. Also, compressing a beating heart induces an arrythmia, and may stop the heart. The focus of the rescue has to be to open that airway and get some oxygen in.
