List three of the main aims of first aid?

The three main aims are to maintain airway, breathing and circulation, in that order.

In an unconscious patient:

Airway - to clear the airway, first have a look to see if there is anything in the mouth blocking the airway. If not then lift the head up slightly so that the head is in a 'sniffing' position (this is known as the head tilt, chin lift manouvre) However, if there is a possibility of a head, neck or back injury, be very cautious of moving the person at all.

Breathing - To assess the breathing place your ear next to the patients mouth, while at the same time looking at the chest. This way you can listen and feel for any breathing with your ear, and look for any rise and fall of the chest at the same time.

Circulation - To check for a heart rate, the best place in an unconscious patient is the carotid pulse, which is on the side of the neck.

If the patient is not breathing or has no pulse - commence CPR.

NOTE: These are rough guidelines and a first aid course is recommended to learn proper techniques for CPR.

What are the vital signs of someone experising shock after a 3 degree burn?

The chances are quite high as the burn may cause bleeding (internal or external) and this loss of blood will deprive the vital organs of oxygen and cause shock. The best treatment would be to treat the burn and then lie the casualty down and raise the legs if the injury allows it. The idea is to get the blood to circulate around the vital organs rather than the legs.

What is first aid for knee injury?

Call for an ambulance is the first thing to do. Make the patient as comfortable as possible. Treat any bleeding that may be present. Don't move the patient unless you absolutely have to. they may have more damage that a broken leg. Don't try to set it. If you suspect the femur is broken, don't move them at all unless their life is in danger where they are. A broken femur can cut the artery in their thigh and they will bleed to death in a very short time.

A normal temperature for an infant is from 97.4-99.4. If an infant's temperature is above 100.4, and the infant is under 6 weeks old; they need to be seen by a health care providor. If a doctor has already told you that you can give Tylenol or Motrin, give that first to see if it brings the temperature down. If it remains above 100.4, you need to bring them in to be seen.

How do you know if your foot is sprained or broken?

The word 'sprain' means a joint injury in which some of the fibres of a supporting ligament are ruptured but the continuity of the ligament remains intact which is not the case in a torn ligament in which the ligament as a whole is torn due to injury. So, in a torn ligament case, the functions of structures that are held in position by that ligament are affected. But in sprained ankle there is no such damage done.

Can nose sores spread?

A cold-sore is apparently caused by the 'Herpes Simplex' virus(HSV1) and usually contracted via saliva or actually making contact with the erupted sore and transferring to the mouth, especially during kissing!

It can be sparked through stress, hormones or a sudden change in body temperature.

As viruses thrive in heat, the best treatment I have found is the application of ice to the affected area, as soon a tingle is felt.

If the sore has erupted, dose orally with Lysine Powder and apply Manuka Honey to the sore( both available from local health-shops ).

Cold sores are caused by a virus. This virus remains in your system and can be reactivated from time to time. It can be transmitted to another person by kissing or by oral sex when it is active.

NO... you should do the Heimlich Maneuver ...

  3. Place yourself slightly behind the standing victim ...
  4. Place your arms around the victim's waist ...

  10. Keep a firm grip on the victim, since he or she can lose consciousness and fall to the ground if the Heimlich maneuver is not effective ...

  11. Repeat the Heimlich maneuver until the foreign body is expelled ...

What are the symptoms of cardiac arrest?

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense. Most heart attacks start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren't sure what's wrong and wait too long before getting help. Women are less likely to know they are having a heart attack simply because they go through so many different aches and pains throughout their lifetime and they do not always get the same symptoms as men can.

Symptoms of a heart attack can inlclude:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain
  • Rapid, weak pulse.
  • Cyanosis (blue colour around the face and lips).
  • Collapse without warning.
  • Chest discomfort or pain that may be crushing or squeezing or may feel like a heavy weight on the chest, especially on the left side
  • Sweating.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Pain that spreads from the chest to the neck, the jaw, stomach, or one or both shoulders or arms, especially the left
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • A fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Excessive sweating
  • Heartburn or abdominal pain.
  • Anxiety, nervousness and/or cold sweaty skin.
  • Skin that is clammy.
  • Pale skin.
  • Unexplainable fatigue.

Some heart attacks are 'silent attacks,' or attacks where the victim experiences no symptoms at all.

If you think you're having a heart attack, call 9-1-1 or your emergency medical system immediately.

What are the general rules to follow when applying a dressing or bandage on a wound?

When applying a dressing or bandage, you would do these things:

  • control bleeding
  • do NOT remove saturated dressings if bleeding continues; instead, apply more gauze squares/pads, and apply more gauze wrap, and apply direct pressure with your hand
  • prevent further injury (such as if there is already a compound fracture where the bone sticks through the skin, you would protect that area so it does not result in more injury)
  • do NOT attempt to clean a very dirty wound; let the E.R. Staff clean the wound
  • do NOT apply an cream, lotion, spray, etc. to any open or major wound
  • do NOT attempt to remove a projectile that has impaled the person
  • brace any projectiles with rolls of gauze (example: a man's leg is impaled by a piece of steel rod)
  • start the dressing a little higher and a little lower than the wound
  • start from the fingers or toes on a limb wound and go upward with the roll of gauze---if the lower leg or arm needs covered
  • leave the toes and fingers exposed
  • do NOT wrap too loosely or too tightly
  • check the color and warmth of fingers and toes; if blue or whitish, the bandage is too tight and needs removed and re-done.
  • do NOT put an Ace bandage over a major wound; you need to see the gauze to see if bleeding continues or restarts.
  • seek medical help promptly

A bandage should be sterile BUT any clean cloth or rag can substitute for a bandage if nothing else is available.

Note: A scratch or scrape can be cleaned and a bandaid or dressing put on IF needed. Advise your patient to keep the bandage clean and dry.
