What is the purpose of the Heimlich maneuver?

The Heimlich Maneuver is a first-aid technique for someone who is choking because food or another swallowed object is obstructing his or her airway. Using an upward abdominal thrust, the Heimlich maneuver compresses the lungs and forces air up into the windpipe (trachea).

The usual technique is done while standing behind the victim. Reach around his waist to the abdomen just above the navel and below the sternum. Clench one fist and use the other to press it into the abdomen. Lift both fists sharply inward and upward to compress the lungs. Repeat if necessary unless vomiting occurs.

What is the average body temp?

Normal human body temperature, also known as normothermia or euthermia, is a concept that depends upon the place in the body at which the measurement is made, and the time of day and level of activity of the person. There is no single number that represents a normal or healthy temperature for all people under all circumstances using any place of measurement.

Different parts of the body have different temperatures. Rectal and vaginal measurements, or measurements taken directly inside the body cavity, are typically slightly higher than oral measurements, and oral measurements are somewhat higher than skin temperature. The commonly accepted average core body temperature (taken internally) is 37.0 °C (98.6 °F). The typical oral (under the tongue) measurement is 36.8±0.7 °C, or 98.2±1.3 °F.[1][2] In Russia and former Soviet countries, the commonly quoted value is 36.6 °C (97.9 °F), based on an armpit (axillary) reading. Although some people think of these numbers as representing the normal temperature, a wide range of normal temperatures has been found.[3] In adult men and women the normal range for oral temperature is 33.2-38.2 °C (92-101 °F), for rectal it is 34.4-37.8 °C (94-100 °F), for the Tympanic cavity it is 35.4-37.8 °C (96-100 °F) and for axillary it is 35.5-37.0 °C (96-99 °F).[4]

The time of day and other circumstances also affects the body's temperature. The core body temperature of an individual tends to have the lowest value in the second half of the sleep cycle; the lowest point, called the nadir, is one of the primary markers for circadian rhythms. The body temperature also changes when a person is hungry, sleepy, or cold.

What are the first aid signs of life?

What to do when a patient's having a tonic clonic seizure?

The thing to do would be to make sure the person can breath (lay him/her over on his/her side) and just make sure the person doesn't injure him/herself by falling and biting him/herself is common in seizures, it hurts like hell though....

...and you should make sure people "watching" knows it's nothing serious and that it's normal and tell them about epilepsy :-)

I don't know if Stesolid works with tonic clonic seizures, however it should, so give him/her one if it lasts more than 3 minutes ;-)

What if your baby's temperature is 38.6?

That is a considerable fever - for a human. In itself not a dangerous temperature, but a doctor will want to know why you have such a high temperature. Is it a relatively innocent influenza or viral sore throat, or could you have a rarer but more serious diseases such as pneumonia, pyelonephritis, or even meningitis? If such a temperature lasts more than a day or two, or if you feel very ill with it, see a doctor.

What does a survival kit contain?

There are about 20 things in a first aid kit. The standard first aid kit includes: -emergency phone numbers -small and large sterile gauze pads -adhesive tape -bandages to make a sling -adhesive bandages in assorted sizes -scissors -tweezers -safety pins -ice bag or chemical ice pack -disposable gloves -a flashlight (with extra batteries) -antiseptic wipes or soap -pencil and paper -a blanket -syrup of ipecac (only use if told to do so by poison control!) -eye patches -a thermometer, -coins for a pay phone ** -possibly a first aid manual.

Contents

Commercially available first aid kits available via normal retail routes have traditionally been intended for treatment of minor injuries only. Typical contents include adhesive bandages, regular strength pain medication, and gauze and low grade disinfectant.

Specialized first aid kits are available for various regions, vehicles or activities, which may focus on specific risks or concerns related to the activity. For example, first aid kits sold through marine supply stores for use in watercraft may contain seasickness remedies.

Airway, Breathing and CirculationFirst aid treats the ABCs as the foundation of good treatment. For this reason, most modern commercial first aid kits (although not necessarily those assembled at home) will contain a suitable infection barrier for performing artificial respiration as part of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, examples include:

· Pocket mask

· Face shield

Advanced first aid kits may also contain items such as:

· Or pharyngeal airway

· Nasopharyngeal airway

· Bag valve mask

· Manual aspirator or suction unit

· Sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff)

· Stethoscope

What is the correct first aid for burns?

cold water

Cold water stops the "cooking" of your skin. Once it has been cooled down the burn can be assessed for treatment. If it is minor use a water soluable product like Burnfee gel to continue cooling it, and to give relief from pain. If it is more serious, a product called Burn Relief can be used as a treatment and dressing in one. It is also water soluable. If a doctor has to be consulted, and you have used a greasy ointment on your burn, it will have to be scrubbed off, and that will really hurt!

++++

Never put any ointment on a burn that has broken the skin - and never burst blisters. A recommended dressing for a bad burn needing treatment is Cling-film, to keep out infection, but do not apply too much pressure with it.

What all is in a first aid box?

In order to answer this question, I need more information from you -- feel free to add it to the DISCUSSION section if you wish. Answer the following quesitons first: * Where are we? In a building in Cincinatti? In a winter aid station in Antarctica? In the International Space Station? What are the geographical and climatilogical considerations? * How long will I have to sustain the patient without outside support? * How many patients are we going to aid from this box? * Are there special circumstances to take into account? (Am I on a leper colony where leprousy is a problem, or an epidemic site where I'll be seeing a lot of haemorrhagic fever? Am I in a cardiac care unit where cardio is the order of the day? A battlefield, where otherwise super-healthy people will show up with wounds?). I look forward to your input.

What happens when you get cut with a rusty blade?

I take it you are referring to Tetanus, in regards your question about the rusty fence.

Fears re this are a misnomer.

It is not the rusty fence that is the problem - the bacteria associated with Tetanus (Clostridium Tetanii) is found only in soil.

It does not occur or exist simply on rusty metal.

The rusty fence (or nail or whatever) simply gives the bacteria a portal of entry into the body - the rusty metal will have had to come into contact with contaminated soil itself in order to transfer Tetanus into your body.

Tetanus has a high mortality rate (25%), and is not worth mucking around with - the symptoms of fully blown Tetanus are quite horrendous.

If concerned, I'd get a shot of Tetanus Toxoid straight away.

You should re-vaccinate every 5 years.

It's worth it just for peace of mind !

Using butter to cool a burn?

no

Put ice as soon as you can. I got a burn the other day on a finger while cooking and used ice on it all evening. It healed without any further need for anything.

Should you give abdominal thrusts to a conscious child who is choking?

Abdominal thrusts are not used any more for unconscious choking. Perform chest compressions just like in CPR instead of abdominal thrusts.

What happens if you cut your vein?

Aside from being in excruciating pain, you'd lose a bit of blood and would need to be rushed to the hospital. There they'd administer pain relief and attempt to surgically re-attach your tongue. It would likely be unsuccessful.

After recovering, you'd be admitted to a psychiatric hospital to assess your mental health. Your reputation would be a shambles, and your friends and family would be distraught that you could do such a thing to yourself.

You would be incapable of articulate speech for the rest of your life, even if re-attachment was successful. Your social life would have effectively been dealt an irreparable blow, and you would be condemned to a life of cruel taunts, rumours, psychiatric medication and counseling, isolation and speech impediment.

How do you know when you need stitches?

You probably need stitches if the wound appears to not be closing on its own, e.g., if the edges of the laceration are not coming together, and the wound is deep. The idea of sutures is to bring the edges of the wound together so not as much tissue-fill has to occur. So if the wound is deep, more reason for sutures. Note that, from the time of the injury, you have about 10-12 hours to get sutures. After that, sutures won't generally work.

How does drip of glocose help patient to recover?

How long does a wasp sting last?

Can drinking hot tea cool the body down?

Well it would be a great question were it true but it's not. This is one of those "it's so weird it must be true" myths.

Do you turn on your heater in the summer? No. Do sales of hot drinks rise in the summer? No.

We are constantly doing things to offset the temperature changes. Its natural. Having hot showers or drinking hot drinks or turning on our heaters in the summer are not natural.

Having a hot drink in a warm climate will raise the core temperature of the body which will cause the body to start sweating, the sweat will evaporate and thus cool the body down, please bear in mind that the perception of heat is relative to the person feeling the heat.
