How long can a human live without its head?

If a clean guillotine decapitation occurs, a few factors come into play. First, the blood vessels all vasoconstrict -- they'll close down, trapping oxygenated blood in the head. Also, neurological functions will start to shut off, reducing oxygen usage, in order to deal with the increasing hypoxia (this is also observed in drownings). As such, you can expect the head to "live" in various conditions for as much as a few minutes. You can expect consciousness for as much as 30 seconds and possibly more. Anectodotal reports of Guillotine (the doctor; not the device) come to us of experiments with convicted criminals who would answer YES with one eyeblink and NO with two blinks. The story goes that Guillotine ran out of questions before they stopped responding (over 2 minutes). Personally, I doubt this, but I don't know. On the other side of the equation is systemic shock. An injury like this would slam the patient into a (eventually terminal) shock. That, coupled with the hypoxia, indicates a super-fast loss of upper brain functions. So what one describes as "life" comes into question. As to the body, death would occur quickly, but would do so an organ at a time. Organ death depends a lot on which organ and how it's treated. You are no doubt aware that organs can be donated for quite some time post mortem.

Brown recluse spider bites?

Does cutting yourself help?

Yes, it can, and almost always is. Cutting is usually triggered by something, so when that happens, you have a very strong urge to cut. (say your trigger was if you got in an argument with your significant other, then whenever you got into an argument you'd want to cur yourself) Mostly the reason people cut is because the chemicals that are flushed into your system when you get injured distract you from reality, like getting high, but those chemicals (mainly endorphins) are addictive. And of course it never solves your problems, just makes them worse in the end.
However, some people (the unlucky ones) don't have a trigger, are just addicted to the endorphins. In these cases they don't have a particular trigger, just are addicted, and it is VERY hard to quit completely once you're addicted in that way. So don't cut, and if you've already started, stop before its too late and you're addicted, or worse...

What should you really do to treat a first possibly second degree burn?

Flush the area with water for 10-15 minutes to remove the source of the burning and cool the area. The water should be cool but not ice cold. A triple antibiotic or burn ointment can be used to help prevent infection and assist with the healing process. The burn should be loosely bandaged. Allow any blisters that form to drain on their own.

Is it possible to walk on a broken foot?

Yes it is. Directly after the trauma, when the patient is in shock and an endorphin reaction has set in, it may not even be very painful. Even afterwards, the pain may (or may not) be slight. This means that you can't always use extreme pain in order to diagnose a fracture. Also, this doesn't mean you SHOULD walk on a broken foot. If you suspect the foot is broken, the only way to rule that out is with an xray or similar scan. Always a good idea to get these checked.but before you get an xray you need to make sure the swelling goes down

Depends on which part of the foot you break.

The foot is generally quite stable, with several bones running parallel to each other and supporting each other. Me, I could walk - well, hobble - a minute or two but it hurt bad for several weeks.

Importance of first aid in school?

CPR is important for any person to learn. Every place expected to have a large number of people (office buildings, shopping malls, schools, etc.) should have designated people with CPR training.

Schools in particular have a large number of children. This group, rarely has CPR training and rarely will have the common sense of behavior when first aid is needed. On top of this, children being children, will get involved in activities which can (and will) require first aid.

Therefore, it is extremely important that teachers will have this training.

just changed a typo from therefor to therefore

How do you get a wasp stinger out if you cant see it?

The best way is to use the edge of a credit card or something similar to flick it out from the bottom. If you pinch it or use tweezers to get it out you can inject more venom that is left in the stinger into you.

Additional information: To alleviate the pain of the sting, use meat tenderizer that contains papaya extract to neutralize the venom through enzymatic action. The enzymes in the meat tenderizer break down proteins in the venom. Make a paste of the tenderizer with a very small amount of water and put it on the spot after removing the stinger.

How do you save someone whose clothes are on fire?

If a person's clothes catch fire, immediately:

  1. Yell out loudly, "Call 911", even if you do not think anyone else is nearby; someone may hear and make the call even if the person doesn't get involved. As soon as you take care of the person you can call 911 yourself if no one has done it.
  2. Get the person to immediately STOP, DROP, and ROLL. Many people panic when on fire and try to run. Grab a blanket; throw it over the person and get the person to the ground to "stop, drop, roll."
  3. Use a blanket or coat to smother the flames -- Do not use any fabric made with rubber, nylon, or other types of melting materials. Continue roll the person away from you, and roll them into/inside the coat/blanket. Rolling will put out most of the flames. Rolling the person away from you will help reduce the risk of the fire jumping to your clothes.
  4. Do NOT pull off or rip off clothing because the clothing often melts into the skin; you will pull off large areas of skin and make the person more at risk for shock and infection.
  5. Use cool fresh, clean water to douse any remaining flames. For example, use an outdoor gardening hose.
  6. Cover the person with a CLEAN bed sheet until help arrives. Try to keep the person warm because burn damage to the skin results in inability to control the body's temperature.
  7. Stay with the person until help arrives. Keep the person CALM and help the person to stay conscious.
  8. Do NOT give the person anything to drink. Smoke inhalation makes the throat swell.
  9. Do NOT put anything on the burns-- NO lotions, butter, margarine, etc.

How do you treat a facial scratch when the scab comes off too soon My 5yr old got a scratch on cheek 48 hrs ago. Dr said put Bactroban on 3x'sday. The scab rubbed off in his sleep. What to do now?

You want to put an antibiotic on it still, possibly cover with a gauze bandage but not a bandaid because the adhesive part might accidentally stick to a new scab and remove it when you change the bandaid.. Antibiotic can be what the doc prescribed, it just would be on top of the injury and not the scab anymore. For your confort, unless you are picking at it, scabs don't come off "too soon." The scab will come off when the body thinks it is done needing it.
