What are some home remedies for a toothache?

Home Remedies for Toothache

What causes a toothache?

There could be several factors at play where the pain of the tooth itself is merely a manifestation of some other underlying issue. You don't appreciate it at this moment, but your teeth are your body's warning system that something is wrong.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible:

  • Are you experiencing fever?
  • Are you finding breathing and swallowing difficult?
  • Is the affected area surrounding the tooth swollen?
  • Is your check or jaw on the same side as the affected area also swollen and feeling sensitive to the touch (almost like a tingling sensation)?
Some temporary stopgap measures:
  • Clove and Clove Oil (not recommended for pregnant women)

Cloves have long been revered for their antiseptic and anesthetic properties: both fresh cloves and dehydrated forms are effective in the relief of toothache pain.

Cloves were used as far back as 200 BC in China for the relief of toothache pain. During the 19th century - long before dental hygiene as we know it today - dentists would carry liberal supplies of clove oil to numb a patient's mouth before and after extraction and for the alleviation of toothache pain. Clove oil contains Eugenol, which has a bactericidal, anesthetic quality that makes it an effective natural painkiller.

    How to use:

Place a fresh or dehydrated clove on the painful part of the tooth and bite down gently for 30 minutes; if the pain allows, chew the clove until it is soft, thus allowing the natural oil to permeate the affected area. You should experience numbness to the area within minutes of application. If the pain persists, chew a second clove.

You can also apply clove oil directly to the affected spot with a Q-Tip, but make sure to avoid the tongue and surrounding gum area. In addition to having a strong, concentrated unpleasant taste of cloves, the oil can also irritate the surrounding tissue. Leaving the oil on for 3 minutes should adequately numb the painful tooth.

Note that clove oil is for external use only: It should not to be swallowed. Rinse thoroughly with water after application. More than 2 applications with clove oil is not recommended. Clove oil can be toxic if taken in large quantities.

Users recommend other remedies:

  • Garlic and onions also have healing qualities that many people overlook.
  • BC Powder (which doesn't taste that great, but works very fast) is a great OTC (over-the-counter) remedy. Take 2 BC powders along with a shot of gin; hold it in your mouth (so that the solution is resting on the sore tooth) for about 30 sec-1 min. More than likely your sore, throbbing tooth will last for no longer than about 45 seconds.
  • Pour undiluted clove oil on the sore tooth using a tiny nozzled plastic syringe, and take an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever.
  • Place either ground clove or pure food-grade clove oil on the affected tooth. This has worked better than Vicodin to relieve pain from a toothache.
  • Oregano. I woke up this morning with the worst tooth ache ever (from a back-tooth cavity). Place some oregano flakes on your tooth. Alternatively, mix warm water, salt and oregano in a cup and swish that around the tooth.
  • The best thing I have found to use for toothache pain is Hurricaine Gel. It is a topical anesthetic, the kind the dentist uses right before giving you a Novocaine shot. Best of all, you do not have to use a lot of the gel to kill the pain - and it lasts for hours. This can be purchased at any pharmacy without a RX.

Hurricaine Gel comes in different flavors; I have found that the original (without any flavor) is better and does not taste bad at all. The anesthesia is effective within half a minute. The gel can also be used for cold sores, cuts in gums due to braces, loose teeth, etc.

  • This sounds crazy, but nothing worked for me except peanut butter! I think it must have something to do with the oils in it. I put a dab on the gum by the tooth and, almost right away, the pressure and pain stopped.
  • Everyone was saying that vanilla or almond extract works, so I went to my cabinets and all I had was pure lemon extract... it really worked wonders! Be careful, though, because it burns; it has 84% alcohol - more than the other extracts - and it worked instantly!
  • Putting Goody Powders or BC's on a toothache also works - for a little while - but it makes the inside of your mouth raw if you use it too much.
  • Dab a Q-Tip in your favorite alcohol or whiskey, then apply to the painful area until the pain subsides.
  • To get rid of a toothache almost instantly, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a glass of water. Leave in your mouth for a couple of seconds, and then spit out. Do this until all the mixture is gone.
  • Baking soda and water... it's the only thing that works. Forget cloves... forget Anbesol... Forget Tylenol and Advil... (and of course it's best to go see your dentist).
  • OTC medicine called "Red Cross" is the only OTC med that has worked for me. It's a 3-part kit for about $4, and consists of a small vial with a liquid, a pack of miniature cotton balls, and a pair of off-set tweezers. This stuff really works!! My dentist refers to it as "a root canal in a bottle." Instant relief.
  • I have been taking Ibuprofen for toothache pain. At first a double dose was necessary, but once the pain subsided, a single dose every 3-4 hours was sufficient. I also tried the peroxide rinse one night (when I was out of Ibuprofen), followed by a warm saltwater rinse. Then I put ice in a dish towel and held it to my palm and cheek simultaneously. Obviously I was desperate and in much pain. My pain did go away in a few minutes after the rinse, but started to return, so I resorted to the ice. Between the two remedies, something worked - my intense pain subsided.

What should you do if casualty is suffering from heat stroke?

Immediately request medical assistance and transport.

Another Answer:If you've identified Heat Stroke (not Heat Exhaustion), you'll know that the major problem you have right now is that core temperature has risen to the point where normal body controls for hyperthermia are no longer 100% active. So the first thing to do is to cool the victim down. Showers and baths are good for this. Remember that you don't need to turn them hypothermic; just lower their core temp until the body takes over and helps itself.

Once temp approaches norms, consider the administration of electrolytes -- PO if the patient is 100% aware, or SQ or IV if not.

Heat Stroke is a serious condition and it's wise to consider medical review for this.

What to do for swollen inflammed new tattoos?

You can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as your doctor prefers, for inflammation and/or pain. Otherwise, keep the area clean and free of infection, applying a gentle lotion a couple of times a day to keep the area hydrated. You might also like to keep a clean bandage over the area for a few days--be sure it stays clean and that you change it once or twice a day.

If there are any signs of infection (serious swelling, fever, puss, blood, etc.), go see a doctor ASAP. If you see any radiating black lines that is a sign of a life-threatening infection, for which you should go to the emergency room immediately.

Is an eye injury an OSHA recordable?

Sometimes!!! In the "OSHA Forms for Recording Work-related Injuries and Illnesses" last updated in 2004, it states that a recordable is any injury that is considered medical treatment beyond first aid. In the "What is first aid?" section it states that ,in bullet point 9 using an eye patch is first aid therefore non-recordable, in bullet points 10 and 11 if means of removal of a foreign body in any body part other than the eye is first aid, therefore if it is removed from the eye it is a recordable.

Can you revive a dead person?

Yes but not always . Recent developments in in 2013 in America, Japan and Australia have meant that clinically dead people from 1 to 3 hours have been resurrected after cardiac arrest using mechanical CPR combined with ECMO treatment( extracorporeal membrane oxygenation - an artificial lung hat keeps oxygen and blood flowing to the brain and vital organs) . A new machine called "Äuto Pulse" uses a band that wraps around and squuezes the entire chest providing precise and consistent compressions.

Brain death is a different matter. Once someone has no activity in the brain stem or brain they are technically dead .However you can revive the body and keep it alive on a life support system BUT the person is considered dead. Keeping a body alive is occassionally done in order to be able to harvest organs or in unusual circumstances to keep a viable environment for a fetus to allow it to continue to develop until it is ready to be born when the mother has died.

Generally while health care professionals will do their best to revive someone, even then the success rate is low. Typically they'll perform CPR as long as needed or until a doctor call the time of death. But during CPR the brain is still being deprived of oxygen so if the person does survive they often have varying levels of brain damage.

The determination of death has always been a problem. In times prior to the 19th century a "'wake" was conducted for the dead. A wake is a period of lasting from 3 to 14 days so that people could observe the body to see if the victim was really dead rather than comatose. This was more than enough time for decomposition to set in which is absolute proof of death. Once decomposition begins ressurection is impossible.

Early morticians would often perform "tests" on the apparent cadavers, either something painful that might cause a response, or some act that would make sure the subject was truly dead.

In the 1980's the call on death was no EKG and flat EEG, or cessation of breathing for over 9 minutes or so. However, this wasn't always reliable either.

Sudden immersion in ice-water sometimes causes "diving reflex" to activate and victims can in rare instances be revived after appearing clinically dead . This is thought to be akin to the reflexive reaction marine mammals experience when they dive deeply and remain submerged for as much as an hour or more. During this time, blood transfuses, body processes decline sharply, breathing stops, and pulse can drop as low as 3 beats per minute, or less. In humans, the likelihood of diving reflex kicking in is dramatically improved with the coldness of the water, the youth of the victim, and the face being immersed.

What is the importance of first aid training?

First Aid is responding to an emergency situation - heart attacks, bleeding, drowning, choking, poisoning, electrocution, spinal injuries, eye injuries and scalds and burns are typical situations where having a basic knowledge of what to do- knowing proper first aid procedures- you can be the hero. Accidents happen, always unexpectedly, having a basic knowledge of first aid is just being wise. And having a first aid kit or disaster preparedness kit is just good common sense.

What should you always do when treating a casualty for heat stroke?

Heat stroke is when body temperature increased dramatically. First of all always notify emergency service or seek for immediate emergency medical care, while waiting for help fan the person, place an ice pack on the victim's neck, let the victim drink cool water, make the victim feel cool as possible if the victim loses his/her consciousness perform a CPR.

What should do when treating someone for heat exhaustion or heat stroke?

If they are still sweating and have normal-cool skin, remove them from the source of heat, elevate their legs and do what you can to cool them off. You can remove clothing, fan them, and try to give them sips of water.

If their skin is dry and hot, remove them from heat and cool them down immediately. Apply cold packs to their necks, armpits, and groin. Wet them with cool water and fan them as much as possible. This is more serious and the patient should be transported immediately.

Why is it necessary to squeeze cold packs?

In terms of first aid, a cold pack is used to prevent swelling. It's especially useful on sprained muscles, and is sometimes used on tooth aches. On long term injuries, it is often alternated with hot packs. Answer sprains and pulls of the muscle and joints
