Fleas

Fleas are wingless insects that live off the blood of mammals and birds. There are over 2,000 species of fleas, and due to their thick outer layer, are difficult to kill through force alone. When fleas feed on a host, they tend to leave raised and itchy bumps, and can sometimes cause diseases.

What does flea treatment do?

"Advantage" is a brand name for imidacloprid a monthly treatment to kill fleas on pets.

The active ingredient is imidacloprid, which acts on the nervous system of the flea to cause paralysis and subsequent death. Advantage stops biting fleas in three to five minutes and starts to kill adult fleas within an hour after application.1 Within 12 hours of application, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead.

This is important because flea bites can lead to skin infections, cause discomfort for your pet, lead to allergic skin reactions, and can even transmit other disease-causing organisms, including tapeworms specifically the "dog tape worm" {(Dipylidium caninum (DIE-pih-LID-ee-um K-nine-um)}

You won't need to use another flea control product. Advantage kills fleas before they lay eggs, so their life cycle is broken at multiple stages. It also kills flea larvae within 20 minutes of contact.

Imidacloprid is an insecticide manufactured by Bayer Cropscience (part of Bayer AG). It is sold under a variety of trade names including Kohinor, Admire, Advantage, Gaucho, Merit, Confidor, Hachikusan, Premise, Prothor, and Winner. Imidacloprid was first patented in the United States in U.S. Pat. No. 4,742,060, on May 3, 1988, by Nihon Tokushu Noyaku Seizo K.K. of Tokyo, Japan. In France, its use (as Gaucho) has become controversial in terms of a possible link to derangement of behavior in domesticated honeybees.

Is raid house bombs effective for fleas?

it will kill some of the adults but your best bet for results is treat your carpets with precor 2000 then vacuum like crazy when it dries completely. If you have them in the house they are deep down in the carpets and the fogs have no residual killing effect and can't get down deep enough to get all the larvae, also the pupal stage is immune to all pesticide so even if you are successful they will still hatch out for a week or 2 afterwards, hopefully contact chemical then die. Vibration (from vac or walking) stimulates them to emerge. To test your carpet walk around a lot barefoot with white socks or if you have them on a bed they probably got onto it from a ride on them

Do fleas burrow under skin?

Answer 1Yes.Fleas can and do burrow.Specifically, Tunga penetrans. Also commonly known as chigoe flea, chigger, jigger. Many were very quick to answer this question-clearly without any real knowledge or research. The chigoe flea should not be confused with Chigger mites, which may also seem as though they were "burrowing". (But actually do not)

This answer, while technically correct, is horribly incomplete. I would assume that the majority of people researching this topic are NOT in South America. This is important because that is the only place the chigoe flea is found. It should also be pointed out that the Chigoe flea attacks the feet primarily. So if there is evidence of sub-dermal infestation and you live outside of Brazil and Peru you almost assuredly DON'T have Chigoe fleas.

What homemade powders will kill fleas?

This is a recipe I found that works well. flea shampoo Mix together 2/3 c water, 1/3 c Dawn, 1 tsp cooking oil (any kind as long as it's liquid), 2 tbsp aloe (any kind as long as it's at least 99% pure), a few drops each of lavender and rosemary essential oils (optional). I found it's easiest to use if you put it in a squirt bottle. I use a Bug Juice bottle, but any sports bottle will work. It gives you a free hand to hold the cat with.

I have found that the Dawn with bleach alternative works best at killing fleas. The oil is to prevent the Dawn from drying out their skin. The aloe soothes bites and heals them. The lavender and rosemary repell the fleas and helps prevent reinfestation. You need to leave it on as long as possible before rinsing. 5 minutes is the recommended time, but 1 minute will kill most of the fleas. If 30 seconds is all your cat will allow, it will kill many, and is better than nothing. I suggest you have the washer filled with water and ready to go, hot water is best. You will want to put the towels in emediately because they will be filled with fleas that aren't quite dead but want to escape the cat. Your clothes may need to be added as well if any fleas jump on you. Another thing that works to help get rid of fleas is rosemary tea. Simmer rosemary in water, about a tsp per cup of water for dried rosemary. With fresh rosemary, you may need more. When the water has turned a yellow/brown, like a weak tea you would drink, strain it and let it cool. Put this in a spray bottle and use around the house. I spray furniture, carpets, beds, and even the cat in between baths. You will need to spray once a week until the fleas are gone. Lavender and mint both repell fleas, but not as good as rosemary and they don't kill the fleas. The tea works great, but won't kill eggs so it could take a couple of months to get rid of them all. If the infestation is really bad, the shampoo can be sprayed around the house the same way as the rosemary tea. There is nothing in it that could hurt you or your pets, and it even kills eggs. I wouldn't spray directly on the cat without rinsing, or it may get diarreah from licking it off.

How do you rid a one week old puppy from fleas?

Since you can't use any kind of over the counter shamppo... i heard baby shampoo works (the human baby shampoo). Build up a think lather a let it sit for about 5 minutes, rinse and then use a flee comb to remove any other flees. The thick lather is supposed to drown the flees.

Can you kill fleas on your guinea pig with borax?

Don't use borax on your dog. It can be used to kill fleas and flea eggs that are between the cracks in the floor or in the carpet. Borax dries out the flea eggs and they don't hatch.

You can also pour borax into your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuum everything thoroughly so that any of the sucked up fleas will die inside the bag.

How do you tell if rabbits have fleas?

Depending on what type of mites your rabbit may have, the symptoms will be different.

1. Fur Mites * Symptoms: Fur loss around the face, neck, and back. Flaky, red, or irritated skin. PLEASE NOTE: Some rabbits periodically lose fur about the neck area due to hormonal reasons. They will NOT exhibit any signs of flaky, red, or irritated skin.

2. Mange Mites

* Symptoms: Often seen scratching and in doing so may make themselves bleed, scratch themselves to point of injury, etc. Also notice a loss of hair on the chin, head, base of the ears, and the neck. 3. Ear Mites aka Ear Canker

* Symptoms: Often shaking their head and frequently scratching at their ears. If you look in their ears you may see an accumulation of what seems to be golden-yellow scabs or earwax on the inside of the ears. It may be obvious, or deeper down. This is often from a loss of blood and/or bacterial infection accompanying the mite infection.

In all these cases it is vital to get treatment for your animals from a rabbit-knowledgeable veterinarian, and to cull/ separate them from your other rabbits and animals to keep the mites from spreading.

Links will be attached to show images of each type of mites

How long can fleas hold their breath?

A fly can't hold its breath at all

It doesn't have lungs and can't control the entry and exit of air into its body, which happens by way of a series of holes (called 'spiracles') on the sides of its body leading to a series of branching tubes taking air into its body. Gaseous exchange takes place by diffusion alone (although some insects can contract and relax their muscles to force air in and out)

If you place an insect under water, air often gets trapped around its body due the nature of its 'skin' (actually called its exoskeleton) and the surface tension of the water - and air also remains in the tubes. It will take a considerable time for this air to be used up (maybe 5+ minutes).

If you add something like washing detergent to the water, this will break the surface tension of the water so that there will be little or no air trapped around the fly's body. This would give a much more accurate indication of how long it can survive without air. respond below :)

Does dawn dish soap kill fleas in yard?

I tried it and it works! But remember, you have to leave the suds on for ten minutes on the coat so that it all the fleas die and do not return. Then watch your dog for twenty minutes to see if he/she starts to itch again. Because it completely dries the coat, but on some olive oil ( about a teaspoon) on the coat before brushing the coat after you dry your dog. Also, distract your dog with a treat ( like a big bone ) while you are watching him/her so that they don't try to eat the olive oil.

Can fleas live in cold temperature?

Fleas are small but hardy insects. The active life expectancy of a flea is normally 2 weeks, but they also have an inactive life cycle. Fleas that are alive in cold weather become dormant. They adjust their heartbeat and body temperature to the elements around them and suspend their lives until warm weather. Subzero temperatures will kill some of them.
