Fleas

Fleas are wingless insects that live off the blood of mammals and birds. There are over 2,000 species of fleas, and due to their thick outer layer, are difficult to kill through force alone. When fleas feed on a host, they tend to leave raised and itchy bumps, and can sometimes cause diseases.

What kind of relation do fleas have with a cat?

Fleas on dogs and cats! These small dark brown insects prefer temperatures of 65-80 degrees and humidity levels of 75-85%... so for some areas of the country they are more than just a "summer" problem. Dogs and cats often get infested with fleas through contact with other animals or contact with fleas in the environment. The strong back legs of this insect enable it to jump from host to host or from the environment onto the host. (Fleas do not have wings so cannot fly!) The flea's bite can cause itching for the host but for a sensitive or flea-allergic animal, this itching can be quite severe and leads to hair-loss, inflammation and secondary skin infections. Some pets, hypersensitive to the flea's saliva, will itch all over from the bite of even a single flea! The flea information presented here will focus on treatment for and prevention of fleas, which, let's face it, is just as important to the pet as it is to the pet's caretakers!

How do you know if fleas are causing all that itching (called pruritus)? Generally, unlike the burrowing, microscopic (Demode x) http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/dem.html or (Scabies Mites,) http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/mites.html fleas can be seen scurrying along the surface of the skin. Dark copper colored and about the size of the head of a pin, fleas dislike light so looking for them within furry areas and on the pet's belly and inner thighs will provide your best chances of spotting them. Look for "flea dirt", too. "Flea dirt" looks like dark specks of pepper scattered on the skin surface. See the image of flea dirt near the bottom-right of this article. If you see flea dirt, which is actually flea feces and is composed of digested blood, pick some off the pet and place on a wet paper towel. If after a few minutes the tiny specks spread out like a small blood stain... it's definitely flea dirt and your pet has fleas! Flea dirt may be your only evidence of a flea infestation but believe the evidence! If there is flea dirt there are surely fleas present. You need to begin your war on the pests.

My dogs are infested with fleas and ticks and they get them mostly around the chicken coop.do chickens carry the ticks and fleas?

They can be on the ground...somehow you'll have to break the cycle. I had a spray that interrupted the gestational cycle of the fleas for use in the house. However, not sure of using it around the chickens. There are some things you can use on the dogs, too.

Answer

Chickens will actually eat the ticks, and keep them down, but they can carry fleas and lice and mites. They are really hard to get rid of. It requires consistent battle for quite some time. If you let up, they will come back full force.

Put diatomaceous earth in the places that the chickens dustbathe.

paint their roosts with insecticidal paint.

Clean the entire chicken coop.

Fumigate it. Make sure that the chickens are all out, and that there is enough time for it to air out before they get back. Check the can.

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth or other pesticide all over the floor and in nesting boxes before putting down hay.dust chickens with DE or other safe pesticide.

Keep doing all this for at least 6 mos.

You use the advantage and your dog still has fleas?

there are a few possible reasons for this 1. you may not be using enough 2. you may not be getting it directly on the dog's skin 3. the fleas may have developed a resistance to the medication 4. there may be too many fleas to be controlled by advantage whatever the cause, you can do several things 1. make sure that the size you are using is correct for your dog's weight 2. be certain that you follow the directions on the package very closely 3. if the above doe not help, try changing to a different product, with a different active ingredient 4. if there are still no results, ask your veterinarian about Capstar. capstar is a pill that begins killing fleas ~30 minutes after giving it to your dog, and i have seen it work wonders for dogs that had been previously miserable from severe flea infestations, so try it out! also remember that fleas reproduce in the environment (grass, carpet, etc.) so killing them there is vital for prevention of re-infestations

Do chipmunks get fleas?

Yes, Chipmunks get fleas. They are known to carry and spread them. You can give your chipmunk a small dose of flea medicine but from my experience, my chipmunk licked it off. I used a all natural cat flea medicine i got from Krogers. Also be sure to bomb the house, mainly the room the chipmunk is in. All animals need to be gone from the house for to hours and wait 30 minutes after cleanup before letting them back in. Its best not to mop or anything because that will take the bombing medicine off the floor and kind of defeats the purpose of the bombing process
