Fleas

Fleas are wingless insects that live off the blood of mammals and birds. There are over 2,000 species of fleas, and due to their thick outer layer, are difficult to kill through force alone. When fleas feed on a host, they tend to leave raised and itchy bumps, and can sometimes cause diseases.

What flea fogger works well?

You can get some results from a fogger, but you can never get it concentrated enough to kill all the fleas unless the area is extremely small. Fogs also have no residual, so after it airs out-it's gone. They like to go down to the base of your carpet fibers, under furniture, cushions, etc. which is why pros don't fog only for fleas, they pretty much spray everything. I recommend an aerosol Precor 2000 which can be used to treat small areas by a homeowner and it contains what most pros use. You have to do something with any host animals that go in and out to keep them from bringing in more fleas later and vacuum frequently, discarding the bag or storing vac outside until after fleas are gone and bag disposed of for good.

No insecticide kills the pupal stage so they will still emerge into the chemical even if treatment is effective for up to 2 weeks, but if you treated everything they should also die. Vibration stimulates them to emerge and contact the residual chemical so frequent vacuuming helps speed it along.

Is Sergeant's Silver Flea Spray for cats okay to use on ferrets?

It most likely would be ok if you used this on your ferret, however make sure the medications are not to strong. The best thing yo do would be to ask a sales associate at the pet store or your vet. I also know that when my kittens were young, they were under six months and no flea medicine was made for cats that age, we dipped them in dawn soap, and that handled the fleas very nicely. Hope something works!

What can you add to your dogs food to ward off fleas?

Brewer's Yeast. But really, those products like Advantage that you put a couple drops of on the backs of their necks works wonderfully well in no time at all. Also, to get fleas out of carpet, sprinkle some borax, yes, like twenty mule team borax that you get in the laundry aisle of the grocery store, onto the carpet, sweep in, let sit for30 minutes or so and vacuum up. The borax is a dessicant and dries up the fleas and their eggs. I did this once and it cleared my whole house of fleas. Borax is safer than table salt.

Can fleas live in a TVs or picture frames?

This answer deals with recovery of used items but also applies to anyone's personal property.

Anytime you deal with other people's property, you risk bringing into your home fleas, mites, bedbugs, and spiders/nests, along with rodents like mice.

Fleas need a blood source. But their eggs can lay dormant, even on cement floors, until a warm blooded animal or person walks by... then, the eggs can hatch and fleas jump onto the human or animal to feed. Eggs can be in clothing piles, boxes, etc., depending how heavily the apartment or home is infested. Always bag used clothing and close the bags, and take used clothing to a Laundromat FIRST. Wash in the hottest water possible to kill the eggs and live critters. Never take items loose in your car--- you can get bugs on your clothing and bring them into your house. Never bring dirty/used clothing to your washer, dump out in your basement, etc. Also, if you use your vacuum in an infected area, make sure to remove the collection bag after vacuuming because flea eggs can live in the bag, hatch, and crawl back out.

Home appliances would more likely contain spiders and rodents like mice.

Picture frames on walls can have spiders, but low incidence. If stored in basements or crawl spaces, you can FIRST PUT ON GLOVES and spray Bug Spray into a garbage bag, put small items in, and close up the bag-- BUT you will need to put gloves back on, remove items later, and wash every item by hand (with gloves). Don't touch your face either.

Upholstered and cloth items-- couches, stuffed chairs, stuffed animals, throw pillows, bed pillows, mattresses and linens, and stored fabric can harbor spiders, dust mites, fleas, and bedbugs. If it cannot be put in a washer in HOT water, trash the used item rather than bring home bugs. If you can Dry Clean an item, it should kill the bugs. However, steam cleaning couches, chairs, or mattresses does NOT work because bugs and rodents can get inside the frame, in the stuffing, etc., so trash rather than bring home.

ALL wood, metal, and plastic items should be handled with gloves ONLY. Why? People can leave bacteria and viruses on objects-- it depends which 'bug' but some can live on objects (called fomites). Always wash with disinfectant, with gloves on, and rinse/dry before taking them into your home.

IF you see even ONE cockroach in an apartment or home you are cleaning out-- leave the items in the trash. It is extremely hard to kill cockroaches, even babies and eggs. One female cockroach can produce thousands of eggs and babies. Nothing used (free) is worth the cost of exterminating your home.

Why do I still have fleas when I just fogged the house a day ago?

Insufficient concentration perhaps. Even if treatment 100% successful, fleas immune in pupal stage & thus will still emerge for up to 2 full weeks. There is no residual benefit from a fog, so you might try frequest vacuuming & if still persists, treat the rooms etc. with residual aerosol. Vacuuming helps stimulate them to emerge as well. (vibration)
