What is the purpose of sub floor bracing?

Sub-floor bracing is provided to transfer sideways loads (ie: not gravity, but wind or earthquake loads) down to the ground.

Bracing needs to be provided at all levels to work. Imagine a building in a wind that had bracing to resist the wind at the roof and wall levels, but not at the subfloor level. The side load of the wind could be transferred through the roof and walls, but when it gets to the subfloor the piles have no way to transfer it to the ground because they are just designed to resist gravity loads. So they will fail in strong winds. It is a bit like a skycraper with columns on every level but one. That level has nothing to resist the gravity so it will fail.

What type of porcelain tile can be used outside in a state with mild climate?

Porcelain Tiles are typically rated for water absorption. >.05% is very standard for a porcelain tile. There is also an industry rating system for ceramic/porcelain tile; the P.E.I. rating offers a recommendation level for usage with regards to traffic levels and application for walls/floors and/or residential/commercial use. Porcelain tiles are completely suitable for exterior use with regards to construction. However, the type of surface finishing is also a factor in suitability. A "wet" or "glossy" glazed finish would not provide good traction for footing. Again, the industry offers specifications that list the coeffient rating of slip resistance. Lastly, only a premium, modified thin set mortar with a full admix of acrylic liquid should be used for installation for a proper bond. Proper consideration should also be given to expansion joints when installed over concrete/cement and the use of a proper non-coupling /anti-fracture membrane system over an approved wood substrate. The grout should also be a premium grade sanded grout that will resist efflourence. Anodized metal tile edge should not be used where direct sunlight is as this will cause expansion and contraction of the metal and possible installation failure. Exterior installations require above 15 degree(C) temperatures for 2 weeks during installation and drying/curing time. Proper hydration of the setting materials can take 3-5 days before grouting can be completed. Installations must not experience a "flash" or "swing" in temperature or humidity during this period. Ceramic and natural stone is not suitable for exterior installations were temperatures can freeze as water absorption will lead to freezing and cracking of tile. Some Slate (Quartzite) can be used with proper sealers applied. Sealing of grout joints is recommended regardless with a premium grade grout sealer.

To carpet a 12 foot by 15 foot room at 29.90 per square yard what is the total cost?

The cost will be 598.00 for the 20 square yards.

Area = L x W = 12 x 15 = 180 square feet.

Divide by 9 to get 20 square yards (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft).

Multiply 20 times 29.90 and the answer is 598.00 (in whatever currency).

How many square feet does one gallon of polyurethane cover?

Depending on the poly, the wood as well as the condition and the age of the wood, figure a minimum of 300 - 500 square feet per gallon. If the floor is very old or dry, it will be closer to the 300. If the wood is in good condition and reasonably new, 500 is a reasonable assumption. Also, with each coat you put on, the poly will last longer once a foundation coat is established.

How many 12x12 tiles need for 15 by 15 room?

Whom ever wrote this problem, did not give the unit of measurement (yards, feet, meters, etc.) so, I am going to presume that the 12 by 12 tile is in inches, and the 15 by 15 is in feet.

If my presumption was correct the answer is 15 tiles. Because a 12 by 12 tile is = to 1 square foot. How many 1's fit into 15? 15!

Well, not exactly.....

You need to multiply 15 X 15 to get the square footage and that will give you

the number of tiles needed since the tiles are 1 ft square. 15 x 15= 225. So you

need 225 tiles. And add extra tiles for breakage...

No one removes their cabinets to lay new tile. If your stove isn't built-in it can be moved and tile laid under it. If it is built-in you would buy a new stove the same size as the old one. Most stoves & dishwashers only come in a few standard sizes so it wouldn't be a problem to find one that fiits.

What is the square footage of a room 14 by 15 and how do you know how much flooring you will need?

210 sq ft.

Typically carpet comes in 12' and 15' widths. If you get a 15' wide piece, you would want it to be 15' long (1 extra foot to trim off). If you get a 12' wide piece, you will need to seam a section along one side. With a 12' piece you would need 20'. This would put your seam in in 3 pieces.
