This is useful when your computer lost boot.ini file. Also it is useful after a major system failure if the system doesn't load OS.

It is checking to see if a bootable disk (i.e. windows startup disk) is inserted. Obviously, if it didn't check + your computer didn't work then you wouldn't be able to use your startup disk.

Floppy discs are fairly old technology now. Many manufacturers have stopped making them. On the other hand, they have been making them for so long that you have to believe that they've figured out how to do it properly by now, so it probably doesn't much matter which ones you buy.

Seriously, though, If you're using floppy discs today you'd better plan to move on to a combination of flash and optical storage media before your data degrades to unreadability on those old floppies.

One thing I do like about floppy discs is that you can set them to read-only. This is an option that is not available on flash drives, except for SD, and then only in software. Malicious software could still write to a supposedly read-only SD card.

The "-s" switch in the format command is used to format the disk so that it is a "system" disk. In other words, it makes it a "bootable" disk.

A RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) driver is used to enable a computer to utilize RAID, which could either improve hard drive performance or allow mirrors of pertinent data.

The head(s) in floppy drives make physical contact with the floppy disk surface, while the heads in hard disk drives fly over the hard disk surface on a cushion of air created by the platter rotation speed. All other features of the devices are similar.

Well not knowing your skill level I'll just give you a few things you can check and if you can't do it then I'm sure you'll be able to find someone. First, make sure that your hard drive is detected in BIOS, if not then change it to auto-detect and it will find your hard drive assuming your hard drive is in good shape. Reboot and if you get the same error then put your XP CD in the CD drive and reboot again. Enter the Recovery Console and fix MBR (Master Boot Record). If none of those work then your options are pretty slim. You probably gonna need a new hard drive. :

The size of a pen drive can be under 1 square inch while a floppy disk is much large than that. Also, pen drives can carry anywhere from 128 Megabytes to 128 Gigabytes and possibly some larger.

Floppy disks generally had the following makeup:

- A thin, plastic disk that went practically all the way to the edge of whatever casing held the disk.

- A center hole made of firmer material than the disk itself that was used to move the disk in a circle as data was written to and read. Earlier designs were plastic, while later designs were metal.

- A thin coating of iron oxide on the inner plastic disk, on one or both sides (single density or double density), which "permanently" holds a magnetic charge if a strong magnet is placed near it.

- A rigid plastic outer shell to protect the flexible inner plastic disk (the reason they were called "floppy disks").

- On later models, there was a spring loaded metal sheath over the disk's main opening, which helped prevent dust buildup.

- Also on later models, a cotton-like substance was included in the disk's interior on both sides to help remove dust as the disk was spun.

- A small plastic tab (a sliding switch) was available on some floppies; when set to a particular position, the disk's drive controller would refuse to write data to the disk, making it "read only."

So, basically, a few bits of metal, a few bits of plastic, coated with some more metal, and a bit of cotton for good measure.
