Basic tools are scissors and a pair of pliers. The supplies and tools are highly individual to the designer and may vary depending upon the designer.
I rely on an excellent set of scissors, a pair of needle nosed pliers and stem clippers. These three tools really give me all the assistance that I need as well as clean cuts, fine control, and the ability to make amazing effects.
Supplies are a different matter. Floral tape, ribbons, ting, picks, wire, oasis, and design ideas are all crucial for advanced designing. Knowledge of how to apply these elements and when are basic training, but the gifted designer will think of other items that are not ordinarily part of the tool kit.

How do you make satin ribbon curl?
This is a fun one...go get your curling Iron! Set the iron on low, and let it heat up. Then curl the ribbon with the curling iron. The ribbon will hold enough heat to curl permanently. To straighten it, just "iron" the ribbon with the iron.
When you deadhead flowers do you take just the flower or the entire stalk as well?
On roses clip back to next leaf, on daylilies take the entire stalk, otherwise just pop the declining bloom off.
The best way to deadhead is to remove only the faded flowers. Once all the flowers on a stem have been removed, then cut the stem back to a bud or leaf or to its base. Another way is to disbud, which is to take off the smaller buds to promote the larger ones.
