According to her biography in the Web Gallery of Art, Angelica Kauffmann was one of the founding members of England's Royal Academy, and in its first catalogue of 1769 she is listed as a member. She didn't paint "for" them, rather many of her paintings, commissioned by various patrons, were exhibited there. What is the best type of paint for crown moulding Flat Semi-Gloss Satin etc.?

Generally, a satin or semi-gloss sheen is best for decorative trim. The shinier paint will be a bit easier to apply, be smoother after application and will accent the crown molding. I always paint crown, doors, door trim, and baseboards in high gloss. Here in the south we also use only one color, white. I also use ceiling paint as the primer coat because I paint it (the crown moulding) when I paint the ceiling. Then I apply 1 coat of...

If you bought a satin paint to match to an existing paint but it is a little too shiny can you add something to the paint to flatten it some?

if your paint is latex add some water to slightly dull the sheen, if you need to drastically dull the finish buy some flat paint in the same color and mix accordingly **** Another thought. Do not thin the paint too much as it will change the durability of the topcoat. Buying a 2nd qt, gallon of flatter paint will also change the sheen but cost you more in the end and you will have a bunch of paint sitting around....

Can you paint over semi gloss paint with satin paint?

More important is, that both paints are of the same kind (like: oil-based paint, acrylic paint, latex paint). Semi-gloss is more easily painted over then high gloss, but first better find out what the old paint layer is made of. Check with the help of alcohol - if paint comes off in any way when you rub it with a cloth of alcohol, it's latex or acrylic paint (and can be painted over with acrylics). ...

What is the difference between satin nickel and brushed nickel?

The Satin Nickel finish is nickel plating on brass that has been lacquer coated and made to appear dull. Satin Nickel is sometimes referred to as brushed nickel. It is similar in appearance to brushed stainless. Brushed implies the parts has been "Wire Brushed" and directional lines of abrasion can be seen. I knew Hilda from 1973 until her death, and discussed much of her life with her. She never spoke about painting herself. Can you paint over satin paint with a flat paint?

Yes, you can. The whole problem with flat paint over satin is the gloss sheen bleeding through the flat finish. I typically do one of two things for a customer when they have this situation: Either I just plan on two coats of the new paint, or I paint the walls with cheap flat white paint and then paint the top coat with the new paint. I prefer the latter, as I always have buckets of cheap flat white leftover, which...
