Garden Insects

The term 'garden insect helpers' generally refers to insects that are beneficial as pollinators or as feeders on destructive bugs. Among the best known of the beneficial insects are the ladybird beetle, the colorful butterfly, and the busy bee. What's bugging your garden? Are there slugs in your salad greens, ants in your azaleas, bean beetles in your beans, or some other pesty insect in your garden? Insects like to eat, but gardeners are not willing to share.

What should you do with your morning glories in the fall?

Many plants in the convulvulacea family are called morning glories. Most are treated as perennials in mild climates and as annuals in cold climates, so treatment in the fall varies by climate. If you are in a mild climate, you can cut the vines back in the fall to encourage new growth in the spring. In a median or colder climate leave the plants alone in the fall and see if they re-emerge in the spring. In any climate, its important to clean up the leaf litter from around the base of the plant to prevent fungus spores from overwintering and infecting the plant in the spring.

Do fireflies turn into pincher bugs?

No, fireflies do not turn into pincher bugs.

Specifically, fireflies or lightning bugs belong to the Coleoptera order of beetles. Within that beetle order, they belong to the Lampyridae family. Earwigs belong to the Dermaptera order of insects. They are not beetles.

What are the color size and weight of ladybugs?

Bright or dark, 0.0007407532 ounces (0.021 grams), 0.04 inches (1.016 millimeters) thick, and 0.138 inches (3.5052 millimeters) long and wide are the respective color, size and weight of ladybugs. Colors can be black, dark brown, orange, pink, red or yellow in terms of the body coloration. Spots may be black or dark brown, bright orange or red, or non-existent.

The harmful effects of junk foods?

The effect of junk foods is two fold- you're consuming something "negative" that's high in saturated and trans-fat, sodium, cholesterol, processed sugars and empty calories while replacing something that would have provided nutrients that could have benefitted you. So the junk food could be contributing to poor cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and increased insulin sensitivity, while increasing your risk for a heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, among others. If you also consider that most junk food is calorically-dense (that is, a very small amount contains a very large number of calories), junk food would also contribute to obesity and related health complications. At the same time, you've missed out on the benefits of fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains that you would have otherwise eaten, increasing your risk for cancer, along with missing the opportunity to help your cholesterol levels, blood pressure and the like, further increasing your risk for heart attack, stroke and diabetes.

Can peppermint oil get rid of flies?

Yes. Peppermint, although it has a pleasant aroma and taste to humans, is naturally disliked by many insects, including mosquitoes, fleas, ants and flies.

Some suggestions for using it as an insect repellent include strategic placement of cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil, topical application on the body, or the use of various concoctions containing peppermint oil that can be sprayed over a broader area.

How do you tell the difference between Africanized honeybees and Egyptian honeybees?

At the local level, a Fast Africanized Bee Identification System (FABIS) test can be performed. Starting with a sample of 50 to 100 bees, 10 bees are randomly sorted. The right wing is removed from each and mounted on microscope slides, and the average wing length is calculated. If the average wing length is over 9mm, the bees are European Honey Bees. If the average wing length is under 9mm, the bees are suspect Africanized Honey Bees. They are only suspect AHB because there are some Egyptian Honey Bees in the county that are a domesticated bee but are slightly smaller that the EHB. Some EHB are also slightly smaller than usual. The FABIS test is like the TB skin test. If the test is negative, you do not have TB. If the test is positive, you might have TB but need a more sophisticated test to be sure. If there is a need to know for certain that the sample is AHB or not, e.g., a multiple stinging incident or death, the sample is sent to the California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) for further testing. They can perform either a DNA, or complete morphometrics test. The DNA test compares the DNA from the sample to known DNA standards to determine whether the bees are AHB or not. This test can be done on a small sample size but not if the bees were killed with certain pesticides. The chemicals used to kill the bees interfere with the test. Complete morphometrics can be used when the sample is contaminated with pesticides. Complete morphometrics is a series of very precise measurements of various parts of the bees in the sample. Some involve lengths of specific body parts, some involve the angles of wing veins. These measurements are then averaged and compared to a standard. A complete morphometrics test requires a larger sample size than the DNA test. Both tests are quite accurate and are considered the final word in AHB determination.

What is the reason for the name 'cowpea aphid'?

That it favors feeding on cowpeas is the reason for the name "cowpea aphid".

Specifically, the aphid in question carries the scientific name Aphis craccivora. It does not limit itself to a diet of cowpeas. It also is considered a major pest of alfalfa, lambs' quarters, lettuce, pepperweed, and shepherd's purse.

How can boxelder bugs be kept out of gardens?

Removal of boxelder trees is a way to keep boxelder bugs out of gardens. The boxelder tree (Acer negundo) represents the main food and host plant for the insects in question (Boisea trivittata). Its absence from the garden serves as a main deterrent to boxelder bug presences.

What if you didn't water your gunite for 2 days?

By Gunite I assume that you were told you have a gunite pool, The gunite part is the foundation of the pool and does not require watering. The surface which is plaster over the top of the gunite needs water. If you just had your pool replastered in the last couple of days it is critical to fill it with water so the plaster can dry. If your plaster is older and been under water before a few days is not going to hurt. Although you do want to get it full of water as soon as possible. Kenny Kummer Brody Chemical

How do water boatmen use water tension?

To travel with oar-like rear-legs over the water's surface without sinking is a way in which water boatmen use surface tension. Surface tension reflects the elastic film-like, tightly-packed, uppermost watery level which forms from a series of positive hydrogen sides of one molecule attracting negative oxygen sides of another and which thereby lets heavier objects float and move.

What kinds of bugs eat plants?

A carnivorous plant is the type of plant that eats bugs. Plants such as butterworts and sundews, corkscrews, flytraps and waterwheels and pitcher plants trap bugs in order to meet nutrient needs that are lacking in the poor soils where they generally grow. The first widely-circulated research on the subject of carnivorous plants was Insectivorous Plants by English naturalist Charles Robert Darwin (Feb. 12, 1809-April 19, 1882).

What are the disadvantages of using a pressure cooker?

Depending on usage and care, the gasket will need replacing every now and then, and occasionally some new manufacturers will come and go, leaving the consumer with no options. What can you do to eliminate ground bees that you think are yellow jackets that come through a hole in your steps and up to your house and keep stinging your dog who is allergic to them?

ANSWER:This is an old method of controling bees. Take a gallon jug, preferably glass and put a few inches of water in the bottom and set it near the nest. I've never used this method, but I would suggest adding sugar to the water to attract them better. Its called Jugging the bees. The bees go into the jug and drown.

Another method is making a solution of malathion and water and pouring this into the hole where the bees come from. Malathion is a poison available at any hardware or Lowes or Home Depot store. Mix one ounce per gallon. This works for fire ants too. I use malathion because it is biodegradable.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO USE MALATHION ON BEES!!!!

If you use malathion you will kill the bees ,the dog and you might even get sick! Bees are good. No need to kill them. Plug the hole and keep the dog away for a awhile. They are biting him because of a spray or perfume that is on him. If you feed him near this area then the bites may be when there is food left out. This would be Yellow Jackets( wasps), they eat proteins. They are not bees.

Remember all these pollinators are what allow our gardens to produce food!!!

Also, just because the powder disappears when you add water does NOT mean it is BIODEGRADABLE. It can conaminate your well, pond and the dogs water bowl.

Is the only thing that ladybugs eat are aphids?

Can aphids live under the skin?

No, aphids can't live under the skin. They're outdoor insects that like to eat plants. It's possible for parasites to live inside of a living body. But there's nothing inside a non plant body that has anything to offer an aphid. An aphid would starve and wouldn't survive.

That aphids can enter and thrive in human bodies is a misconception from the 2006 film 'Bug'. The character that Michael Corbett Shannon [b. August 7, 1974] plays believes that aphids can enter and take over human bodies. His belief is an indication of his mental state and not at all a reflection of reality.

How do you save a box elder bug in the winter?

During the winter a box elder bug [Boisea trivittata] is capable of saving itself. It gets its name from its presence on box elder trees [Acer negundo], which really are maples. As temperatures drop, the bugs seek cracks and crevises in vegetation such as shrubs and trees. They also seek entry ways into the ground and into such structures as buildings, garages, and houses. They're just looking for places that are warm and sheltered from the cold and from disturbance.

Which region of the insect's body is specialized for movement?

The thorax is the region of an insect's body that is specialized for movement.
