Golden Retrievers

All dogs belong to the genus, species, and subspecies "Canis lupus familiaris." In other words, dogs are a subspecies of wolf ("Canis lupus"). Scientifically or in terms of taxonomy, breeds of dogs are not separate subspecies at all since all breeds have the potential of producing offspring with any other breed (and with wolves, actually). Thus, there is no formal scientific nomenclature for any breed, such as Labrador retriever.

In part, this is because breeds are not only genetic but also (human) cultural.

In the United States, purebred Labrador retrievers can come in three colors called black, chocolate, and yellow. (There is no such thing as a "silver" or "golden" Labrador.) Labradors are classified as Sporting Dogs by the AKC (called Gundogs in the U.K.). They originated in the 1700s in what is now Newfoundland from a breed that is now exctinct called the St. Johns Dog or Water Dog. Labradors are closely related to Newfoundlands (Newfies).

Could be from a number of reasons such as severe flea infestation, bad grooming, mange, etc. Best bet is to take it to the vet to get a skin scrape done in case it is mite mange which is spreadable to other canines and will progressively get worse.

No. Goldens have medium-length hair with varying amounts of feathering. (Feathering is longer hair on certain spots ... Google some images of Golden Retrievers and you will see differences in the amount of feathering.)

If you want a short-haired retriever get a Labrador Retriever .. they have short hair all over without feathering. (Labs are more energetic and somewhat less easier to train than Goldens though.)

Just a thought .... but if you are looking for a "shorthaired Golden" because you think short-haired dogs shed less .... that is NOT at all true!! That is a persistent myth for some strange reason but it has absolutely NO basis in reality. Short hair does NOT mean the dog will automatically shed less.

In fact, most short-haired dog breeds shed far MORE than Goldens ... examples are Dalmations and Corgis. Both those breeds shed FAR more than Goldens ... they just shed a lot of shorter hairs! Another fact is that most non-shedding breeds also happen to have the LONGEST hair ... like Maltese and Shih Tzu breeds.

my dog is only a year old but is very protective of my husband and i and our kids, as well as the other animals in the house. i believe good traits of a guard dog would be that they dont run when off leash, and when they do run, they come back when called. this shows that if for some reason you yelled for help, your dog would be there asap to help you. while laying in bed my dog often stares at the window when he hears something but doesnt bark. he lets us know when there is something out there by either growling or starring and completely freezing his body. basically it comes down to how well you have trained your dog. an untrained dog is less likely to guard you and your family but by training your dog to stay by your side, come when called the first time, and rewarding your dog when he/she barks but stops when they are told "its alright", your at better luck of having a good guard dog. im no professional but all this helped me. i trained my dog myself and he walks without a leash when he can and stays right by my side. i use the word"run" when i want him to go play, and he knows when i say "come" he is to return. hope this helps you, goodluck.

It varies a lot. Mia was 15lbs at 3 months. She is now 55lbs at 6 months. There are some Labradors, particularly English Labs, that are 25lbs at 8 weeks. Those will usually be the dogs that are in the 90lbs-100lbs range when fully grown.

A golden retriever can kill a young deer, but not an adult deer, unless it's an adept hunter that has learned to hunt and kill deer for food (which is probable, especially if forced to survive in the wild). Adult deer have sharp hooves that can slash a dog pretty badly if it gets too close. Rutting bucks have sharp points on their antlers that can prove fatal to a dog if the points happened to gore the dog.

not only golden retrievers dig holes. lots of dogs dig holes it's just something they naturally do. sometimes it's because they are bored.
