How often does Google update Street View in the countryside?
Street view photos are updated on an ongoing basis but general plan is to include more and more cities than keep any given city's photos current. More cities are added every day.

When do Google Maps take the satellite pictures?
Once or Twice a year.
Answer #2
Google doesn't take satellite pictures. Google purchases satellite imagery from a variety of providers such as DigitalGlobe and GeoEye. Much of Google's imagery actually comes from aerial photography mostly in airplanes with special high resolution cameras. Google make bulk updates to Google Earth and Google Maps imagery usually every 60 days but not all areas are updated on each update.
Why does Google Maps not have Street View in China?
Back in early 2010 Google announced that it had been the victim of a cyber attack originated from China that resulted in compromised Gmail accounts and stolen intellectual property. Google had threatened to leave the Chinese market, but later that year China renewed it's Google License and Street View Rolls Again.
Because of this interruption there is very little Street View imagery for China except for Beijing, Hong Kong, and possibly few other major cities. Currently, Street view maps in China are leased from a provider named Mapabc, which is located in Beijing.

What does the light blue shading mean on Google maps?
I think the light blue shade represents sports facilities, like sports complexes and dedicated playgrounds. This is not based on any official Google source, but I see that all the blue shades are on such sports facilities.

Can you view pictures from 2007 on Google maps?
If imagery for a given area in Google Maps is older than 2007 you must wait for an update in that area.
If imagery is more recent than 2007 Google Maps doesn't provide a 'historical imagery' view as Google Earth does. In that case you have to download/install Google Earth to see old/historical imagery.
How to connect Google Maps and YouTube?

Actually you can embed a YouTube video into the description of a placemark displayed in Googe Earth or Google Maps. See tutorial in related links.
By definition an image is blurred if you cannot see things clearly due to a number of factors.
For example, Google Earth and Google Maps imagery can be blurred when a given area is at lower resolution than its neighboring area and appear "pixelated" when zoomed in too closely.
In some cases regions have been intentionally digitally obscured or blurred for a number of reasons. Google, for example, automatically detects licenses plates and faces in its Street View imagery and digitally blurs the pixels for privacy and security concerns.

How does the Google Maps interact with other technology?
The answer really depends on what you mean. If you mean how it was created:
Google maps is take by space satellite that take images of the earth from space and stitches them 'together' to make one large image.
If however, you meant how does it react to external technology:
Google Maps Works in accordance with your web browser or iphone app. The computer gives permission allowing it access to the computer. It then uses the processing power of your PC to run. If you are using a 3D view such as Google Earth this will often be installed on your PC to speed up loading time and for easy access of resources.
Historic street maps exist for many cities; you can find them at the city library, local historical society or at the State Archives.
To find the precise address: the 1880 and later censuses include a column for house number, and the street name is usually written along the lefthand margin of the page. For earlier censuses, or if the address was omitted or unclear, your best bet is to look at the city directories (which are available for most major cities and many smaller ones). City directories are great for tracing the whereabouts of your ancestors between census years as well. These can usually be found at the repositories listed above, and can also be borrowed on microfilm through the LDS Family History Library system.
Keep in mind that some cities (such as Chicago) changed their street numbering systems at some point... so the address given on a historic record may be different from the current address. If this is the case, a librarian or archivist may be able to direct you to a resource to help you determine the current address.
Thanks for your response.
I'm working with the 1870 and 1880 censuses, and, unfortunately, there were only a couple of streets and addresses recorded in the *entire county* for the years I'm researching.
And I have so far been unable to find any sort of old street maps or city directories for the two small towns I have been focused on.
I was hoping there was some sort of map of enumeration districts that could be used.
This web site may be of use to you. I have not downloaded this to make sure the instructions are on it. But the people who were hired to take the census were given spectific instructions on how the travel the area they were given, to insure they did not duplicate and to insure they counted everyone in their sector.
Each sector was given a code and and each dwelling another code. By using the codes and the instructions for the census taker you should be able to determine the location of the residence. Hopefully it will not be a office complex or parking lot now.

When does Google Maps update Street View?
Street view photos are updated on a continuous basis, but there is a tradeoff between adding new cities and keeping the existing street view imagery current. More new cities are added every day in addition to existing imagery being updated, but it may be several years until a given city is updated.
See related links for more details including list of cities by country where Google's fleet of Street View cars are currently driving.

Google Maps doesn't display the imagery dates, but Google Earth does. That's Google Earth the desktop application not the 'Earth' mode found in Google Maps.
Google reports that the imagery in Google Maps and Google Earth is on average one to three years old.
Since both use the same imagery database you only need to visit the same area in Google Earth and enable the 'Status Bar' in View menu to show the approximate imagery date for a given area in the lower-left corner of the screen.
