Are gophers edible for humans?
I see no reason for it to be unsafe for human consumption. It does seemingly eat a good bit of vegetation. I read that prairie dogs are edible and they feed on clean vegetation. Trusting that gophers are similar in their eating habits, than it will not likely harm anyone. Perhaps it tastes similar to chicken just like the prairie dog reportedly tastes like. You might need a few of those burrowing critters to get enough to eat. If it came to survival, I myself might even try cooking one for dinner, just to sample the finished product. If I cooked it in chili, I may be able to get people to try it without giving away the plot. Bon apetit!
Gophers tend to live where there are lots of green's to eat. They bury deep holes underground, and nest there.

What does a hedgehog raccoon koala and opossum have in common?
Raccoons and possums are both warm blooded, air breathing mammals. As mammals, they nurture their young on mothers' milk. Also, both being mammals, their limbs are oriented vertically, they have a four-chambered heart and they have a flexible neck with seven cervical vertebrae.
That is where the similarities end.
Raccoons are placental mammals and possums are marsupials. True possums are found in New Guinea, Australia (including Tasmania), Sulawesi (Indonesia) and a few other small islands in the Pacific region. Raccoons are mostly found in North America. Their feeding habits are different: raccoons are scavengers, but true possums are not.
What large rodent looks like beaver but has a fluffy tail in Rocky Mount NC?
Well, we sent our photos to the NC Museum of Natural history, and they confirmed it was definitely a 'skinny' groundhog/woodchuck. I must assume that yours was the same thing given the description. It didn't really resemble the other photos on the web; mainly because of its tail. But, the experts confirmed it. Mystery solved!
plant called wiregrass is so used to fire that it germinates, or grows, out of its seeds, after a fire. The bare soil that remains after a fire is a soft and fertile soil bed. The wiregrass plant uses this soil bed to put down its roots. Without regular fires, wiregrasses might be taken over by trees and other plants that grow faster and taller.
An animal in Florida that likes to eat wiregrass is the gopher tortoise. Wiregrass is a big part of a gopher tortoise's diet, so regular fires mean gopher tortoises have a regular food supply.
