It's average. Mostly they say a 2.0 is average, but in reality because of grade inflation a 3.0 is more like average in college. You're not failing, but it'd be better if you could pull your average up above 3.0.

I don't know the minimum GPA to get accepted into occidental college. But you definitely need to get decent grades. A good GPA and a decent SAT scores are a must. After you accomplish this, start thinking about ways you can separate yourself from the competition. Extracurricular activities are very important. Lastly, make sure you want to go to occidental college. I know a lot of students that thought they wanted to go to their dream school, but when they got in and went to that school, they were really disappointed. I have a 1340 (1600) on my SAT also, 3.0 unweighted GPA in the full IB programme, good essays, and am the "king of extracurricular activities." I am also applying to Emory, but I am applying to Oxford college, on the Emory campus. Oxford college is everything that Emory is and is still a part of Emory, but your classes are separate from the Emory college students for your freshman and sophmore years. After these two years all Oxford students are then tranfered to the main Emory college. I applying for Oxford because it is slightly easier to get into than Emory itself (because of my rather low GPA). You have a pretty good chance of getting into Emory, but if you were to apply to Oxford (or another affiliated college of Emory) your chances would be greatly increased and you will still get an Emory education and Degree.

You'll need a 3.5 in college at least. Cutting into people isn't a job for everyone.

There really isn't a set GPA. If you take harder classes and get lower grades, they're going to understand. They'd rather take someone with a 3.0 and AP/Honors classes than someone with a 4.0 in Academic classes.

they accept anything from a 3.0 and higher HOWEVER your chances are very slim if you do not have at least a 3.4 . When i went for a tour there, they told me about 25% of students have below a 3.4, 50% have from a 3.5-3.7 and the last 25% have higher than a 3.7.
