That will depend on what type of tent it is. Tents with flexible poles that go across the top of the tent are all pretty much alike. Assemble the poles and insert them through the channels on the outside of the tent, then stake down the bottom edges.

If I understand you right, you are asking how much heat it takes to light cloth that has been charred.

We used to place cloth in an airtight container such as an old metal coffee can and seal the top with aluminum foil and wire. We would then put the can in the fire and let the cloth char inside the can. Because there was no air in the can, the cloth would just char and not burn or be consumed by fire.

After it cooled, we would place the charred cloth in a waterproof container to be used for fire starting later. A spark dropped onto the charred cloth which was placed inside a small bundle of tinder would burn much like charcoal without the flames and that was used to ignite small tinder and wood shavings.

The Temperature? Good question. I don't know. Whatever the temperature is of a small spark.

14 thousand feet is approximately half the height of mount Everest. Hiking is extremely subjective in nature, it depends upon various external factors like weather, terrain, location etc. It also depends upon the hikers stamina and physical fitness.

It depends on how you're going hiking.

If you're in a team competitive hike, you'll each want a coat, flask of water/coffee/tea (whatever floats your boat), a ration pack for emergency (high sugar foods + nuts), gloves, hat and a scarf, a torch, a whistle. Then food for meals.

If you're just going for a leisurely stroll; food and drink with a mobile phone in your pocket should do it.

A path for your feet, a trail in the wilderness too narrow for a vehicle to drive on.

I use sand paper of diffrent grits attached to a paint stirrer and it works great! I learned this trick from a guy who is a professional wood-worker.

Someone answered: "Your dog probable can go with you as long as he has the right equipment for his feet, and food and water."

But there's much more to it than that. If you are talking about a dayhike, then the answer is yes, but the dog should be leashed to prevent problems with wildlife. You wouldn't want to have the dog go after a snake and be bitten, or after a porcupine and get quills in its nose.

To ascend a slope, you have to overcome the force of gravity that is pulling down on you. Coming down a slope, gravity will tend to accelerate your descent (as it would when sliding down a hill). Although you still have to lift your feet from the ground (opposing gravity) if you are walking, you do not have to lift your body through the entire step, as you do when going uphill.

Well, the military... It's a great little tool. If the question is "where can you buy one?", you can usually pick them up for a few cents in a military surplus store. Hiking outfitters have started selling a larger version for a couple of bucks.

People don't need to take bells when they are hiking. Some people do it so bears can hear them coming, thus avoiding surprise encounters. Personally, I find them annoying. The odds of a sudden bear encounter are slim in most places, especially with a little practiced awareness.

Sometimes we travel for the fun of travelling, and other times we travel because there is somewhere else that we need to be. Both are legitimate.

Using a magnet, string and needle you can create a crude but workable compass.

Method

Get a needle or a very small nail and a bar magnet. Also get some thread or a bowl of water and two tiny pieces of cork.

Hold the needle in one hand and the magnet in the other.

Put the North end of the magnet against the needle in the middle and rub it towards and off the point.

Lift the magnet up and away from the needle and place it in the middle again.

Repeat rubbing the North end of the magnet against one half of the needle 20 times or so.

Flip the magnet over so you are using the South end and rub it from the middle to the 'eye' end of the needle 20 times.

You have magnetized the needle just like a compass needle.

Hanging Compass

Tie one end of a length of thread to a stick and the other end to the middle of the needle.

Balance is important

Let the needle hang freely and slide the thread to a point on the needle where it balances level.

Lower the needle into a wide-mouthed jar and lay the stick across the opening to prevent wind interference. Watch which way your compass needle turns. It should always settle to the same direction.

A sheath is what a knife, axe, or machete is carried in while not being used. They are usually made of leather or a heavy nylon. They protect the carrier from accidental cuts by covering the blade.

you can tie a knot at the end and if it's nylon you can melt the ends.

Thats easy, the majority of caves do not have any snakes being that they are cold blooded creatures and need heat, caves are dark and cooler. So in hindsight normally you will not see any snakes in caves, maybe at the very entrance to it you might find different creepy crawlies but once inside there really isnt any signs of life very often unless a bear or some other type of animal has come inside for as nap.

A bivi bag is another name for a bivouac sack - waterproof fabric designed to slip over a sleeping bag.

Comfortable shoes are necessary for hiking to prevent blisters and discomfort while walking. It is also important to wear sturdy shoes so one does not slip or injure themselves while crossing rough terrain.
