What argument used to justify slavery appealed to people religious beliefs?
They argued that because slavery was in the Bible and that the Bible gave instructions regarding slavery, that there was nothing wrong with slavery and that God even ordained it.
One problem with that logic was that it ignored the social context of Biblical times. When there is no welfare system, and everyone is in poverty, slavery might be considered more ethical than nothing. At least they could eat and have a place to sleep. However, it had nothing to do with race in Bible times. Joseph's own brothers sold him into slavery.
Another problem with that logic is how to explain the parts of the Bible that get ignored. Okay, so lets consider for a moment that we accept the premise of slavery as being a Biblical institution. Then where are the fathers seeking to have the elders of their cities to stone their rebellious sons to death? Hey, that would clean up a lot of youth violence. Or why aren't pastors checking everyone to make sure their genitals are intact? Deuteronomy 23:1 says that males who are mutilated in certain ways are not to enter the congregation of the Lord. Or why don't people who wear clothing of mixed fabrics or have tattoos get in trouble with the law for that, when the Bible forbids both of those? The point is, why support slavery on the basis of Scripture, but not support other things that are just as barbaric based on Scripture?
Can parents make their child be in a religion they don't want to be in?
No.
Everybody, regardless of age, have rights. Human rights.
Two of these rights are:
- The right of choice
- The right of belief
The right of choice grants you the right to make life choices for yourself. The only exceptions are where law forbids you from doing so. For example the legal age to have sex, drink and smoke.
Laws will only forbid worship of a certain religion if the religion is deemed unsafe or criminal (ie- if the religion encourages suicide or sacrifice).
The right of belief grants you the right to choose what you believe in. This includes politics and religion.
It is against the law to force someone to believe in something they either refuse to believe in or don't want to believe in.
It is against the law to force someone to believe something because it is against your human rights.
Parents can freely teach their child their own beliefs. But they cannot force their child to follow those beliefs without breaking the law.
'Anxious scrutiny' is an established doctrine, which brings a 'hard-look approach' to cases. It is a rigorous examination, used in cases which relate to the most fundamental human rights, for example, the right to life. When that decision may put the applicants life at risk, this calls for the most anxious scrutiny by the courts as a good justification needs to be made for the interference with those rights.
It's demonstrated in the case of Bugdaycay
Is racism in America reversed now due to changing demographics?
No. Racism is the institutionalized racial prejudices against a certain race of people. Since white people in America still have the vast majority of power to make laws and enforce them, racism still can only be against people of color, not against white people.
Not even close. Even compared to the existence of the universe, we've only been here a moment. And forever is a lot longer than that.
Man remains a work in progress and like a portrait by the masters that awaits the correct pigment to be added to the pallette, man remains an imperfect creation at best. Man can only survive as best he can hoping that the earth he exists on can tolerate man's abuse.
Where in Texas was slavery most likely to occur during early statehood?
During early statehood, slavery was most likely to occur in the eastern and southern regions of Texas, particularly in areas like the Gulf Coast and the Blackland Prairie. These regions had fertile land suitable for cotton cultivation, which was a labor-intensive crop that relied heavily on enslaved labor. Cities such as Galveston, Houston, and Austin also saw significant slave populations due to their economic activities and growing industries.

What are people's attitudes to religious offences?
It depends entirely on the person, and you will likely get numerous responses below.
Answer 1: Religious Offence Should Not be Legally Important
Historically, blasphemy was a crime in almost all parts of the world. The Catholic Inquisitions and Islamic Stonings are well-known. Less well-known are Hindu pyre-burnings in India, Confucianist repression of Buddhism and Catholicism in Korea, Buddhist repression of Christianity in Japan, Religious Jewish attacks on Arab Muslims in the Palestinian Territories, and many other religious issues. The punishment of blasphemy as an offense continues in many parts of the world and has resulted in an unmitigated disaster in those countries. Not only does it result in financial ruin and imprisonment of the accused, but retards the development of new technologies and constricts the variety of thought that can exist. It also prevents the flowering of religions within the state and serves to corrupt the Divine purpose of religion to improve a person's soul with the violence inherent in repression. Each and every religion should be criticized and defended only through debate and discussion. The law should ignore all religious disputes and not take any theological dispositions.
Peaceful protests and debates in defense of religion or in opposition to it should be the only mind that should be paid to religious offenses and blasphemies.
