What problem did the foruth amendment address?

The Fourth Amendment forbade the police or government from searching private property without the authority to do so (such as in a warrant). This provided, the people wanted to have more security on their private property, as the English had perpetuated random searches during the colonial era. It essentially assures an individual's right to one's titles, and the government can only intrude upon this property if their is legal documentation that authorizes the police why the search is needed and what the police is searching.

Granted, this does not stop police officers from searching in plain view. For instance, if a person has a bag of marijuana in the front seat of their car, the police can take immediate action. But other than in instances such as that, the Fourth Amendment helps American citizens retain their privacy.

What advice would you give me to help me stand up for my own convictions?

Here are some tips that may help:

  • Be sure that you know what you believe in, and why you believe in it. If possible, identify some evidence to support your convictions, from your own life or from things that you have heard about or read about. This is your 'ammunition'.
  • Spend time with people who share your beliefs, and talk things over with them. This will strengthen your self-confidence.
  • Stay calm if your convictions are challenged. Don't get drawn into an argument (an argument is different from a discussion). If that is difficult, walk away. You don't have to prove anything to anyone unless you choose to.
  • If you do choose to get into an argument, try not to become offensive or abusive, even if the other person does. Set them an example of behaving with dignity and respect. If that is not possible, again, walk away.
  • If you fail to stand up for your convictions, forgive yourself and try again another day.

With communication, things are put forth into the world, that in many cases, results in changes or policy updates. The thinking is, if we as a group, come together and communicate our needs and desires, our likes and dislikes, this creates a better community as how can things change if no one knows there is a problem? Communication allows the masses an avenue of finding out, if what the majority of people want in their community. Communication is a good thing, one we should cherish and always, ALWAYS take advantage of this right.

And that, whether or not these rights are enshrined in a national legal code, no government is lawful if it fails to upholds them. See also human rights.
