When is the best time to go fishing in a river or lake?

Well it all depends. I line in Minnesota. The only time I dont fish is the period between "soft water fishing" and "ice fishing" and visa versa. The fishing can be "better" at different times of the year, but you can usually atleast catch a few fish on each trip. Prime times can be early spring when they are spawning, late fall, and early and late ice. It also epends on the species you are targeting. As far as actual "time" I prefer early morning, an hour before sunrise til 2-3 hours after can be great, as well as late evening, an hour before til a few hours after sunset are the main times I focus on depending on the species I am targeting. I use those methods when fishing for walleye and crappie. If I am pike or sunfish fishing I target tham all day long, as pike are roamers and sunfish are the easiest to find. Hope this answers some of your questions.
