The main complexity for charging for interior design services is the amorphous nature of the job. Projects often change scope midway and can be delayed considerably. While an interior designer may prefer an hourly fee the client will always feel suspicious and cheated.

If you set a fixed fee then the interior designer feels cheated if the scope of the work is much more or the project drags on.

A combination fee works better: use a fixed per square foot/metre rate for the design work, drawings etc.

Use an hourly rate for materials and specs: choosing, ordering and buying, as well as site visits and meetings. IF the client has a problem with this then make an estimate of number of hours you'll spend on a project till a particular deadline and charge the lump sum cost. Agree to a renegotiate hourly rate fee beyond the deadline.
